To me bluegill is the absolute best tasting fish. Make a 40%cornmeal 60% breadcrumb mixture with salt and pepper. Fry them extra crispy😋

Yes, they do reproduce. They are mostly male, so their numbers are not what we would see from a pure bluegill however. Please be aware that they are not a fish for every pond nor every situation! They do not reproduce enough to provide adequate forage to feed largemouth bass. It all depends upon your goals, and what you want out of your pond. Any fish hatchery should have hybrid bluegills, they are very common. Thanks for the comment!

Sir, I’m from central indy. I just discovered those hybrids in a retention. Pond near me. They are fat, big and fight hard. My question is do they breed? I like to put 2 pairs in a large tank.

Hi! Yes, if what you're seeing is the common Hybrid Bluegill, (a cross between a male Bluegill and a female Green Sunfish) they do reproduce. However the first generation hybrids display a severe male bias, with very few females. Some studies suggest they are 95% male, so finding a female may be a little more difficult. I bought 3"-5" hybrids from keystone hatcheries in illinois and started raising them in 100 gal stock tanks. They were very territorial and fought all the time. (The people at the hatchery were very territorial and fought all the time not the fish; just kidding.) i had to separate the hybrid bluegills, each individual had a 40gal tank. They showed aggression towards the hybdrid bluegills in the neighboring tanks, swimming next to the glass flaring gills and displaying hostilities. They larger ones grew from 3"-5" to 7-1/2" in less than a year. After harvesting them i switched to northern bluegills, i am able to keep several together in stock tanks without problems. I'm curious how territorial are the hybrids in your ponds? How long do you raise them for? and how big are they at harvest? Same question for your northern bluegills

The hybrids (HBG) are definitely aggressive, which is the characteristic most often used in the sales pitch.. "they're a great kids fish"..."will bite when nothing else does", etc. And there's absolutely truth in both those statements, to a point! They can become hookshy when subjected to multiple catch and release occurrences, just like any other fish. I can't really say I see them acting aggressively towards each other, at least no more so than our northern bluegills do. We don't have a harvest schedule, as our goal is to see how big we can grow these fish. We harvest as needed, for a meal here and there. We've been experimenting with them for 15 years, and have restocked multiple times. Our pond record is an honest two pounds, with three fish hitting that mark thus far. Lots of fish between 1-2 lbs.

Hi Devin, at this point in time we do not sell fish. However the hybrid bluegills are readily available from most fish hatcheries.

I’m not a particular fan of those hybrid and pond fed blue gills. I prefer the ones caught from rivers. Preferably blackwater rivers. But that’s just me.

David, we don't notice a difference in the taste. We do find the hybrids to be a little more...awkward?, when we filet them. They have a more rounded shape that takes a little getting used too. Thanks for asking!
