Hyrtl’s catfish is a common type of eeltail catfish that is found across much of northern Australia. Growing up to 40cm in length, it is more often seen at smaller sizes of around 20cm. Like many catfish, the spines on the fins are venomous, very sharp, and can inflict a painful wound.
In different parts of its range, this catfish is sometimes referred to as the Glencoe tandan, common eeltail catfish, or yellow-finned catfish.
This school of catfish were filmed in the upper reaches of the Finniss River near Batchelor in the Northern Territory of Australia.
