Formerly a member of the Mountain Galaxias (Galaxias olidus) species complex, the Ornate Galaxias (Galaxias ornatus) was first described to science by Tarmo Raadik in 2014. A small native freshwater fish, it is usually found in clear upland streams south of the Great Dividing Range in central Victoria.
This video shows some habitat of this species in the upper Maribyrnong River catchment near Wallan, just north of Melbourne. Filmed along a few hundred metres of creek, it shows a range of different freshwater biotopes in this area of rural farmland. If you look closely in full screen mode you will be able to see a variety of different aquatic invertebrates, as well as the fish themselves. The only other fish I observed in the creek were Short-fin eels, but unfortunately I didn't catch them on my cameras. Other species may also be present but no survey was done, just what I caught on camera.
I have re-uploaded this video with some corrections and footage I forgot to include.
