Plus, they were poorly bred for a medium growth shade tree that could potentially be put in a front yard under lines but they have such an acute poorly branching structure that they always fail. Then they look dumb and one sided and you cut them down.

My city has been lining the boulevards with Japanese lilacs…I had one when I bought my home, then a storm topped the spruce year after year, so I took them out. Before I have been able to get a large enough shade tree to shade that area put in, the entire area is guess what? JAPANESE LILACS! So, yeah, the city is putting in a tress that spreads like mad in sunny areas…in sunny areas. My taxes doubled this year and some idiot picked out a pretty tree with out knowing anything about them and is flocking the city with them. They are also trying to trim them into a shape that is very difficult to maintain. The city now has invasive trees planted by the city with our money…all they had to do was ask one of the group that doesn’t all of the native plantings I’m the downtown area if that was a good choice and someone would have brought them into my large yard.

@@michaeljarvis5489 I live in John Menard’s hometown, so there you go. I paid extra to have a native maple put in front of my home. I paid hundreds (we were denied the option to plant our own trees in front of our homes) for a tree I could have transplanted from my parent’s property for the cost of my own labor and the tiny bit of extra gas to tow the trailer (vs no trailer). This year I got all of the Japanese lilacs removed from a boulevard between lanes by bringing in pictures of a mature tree. It isn’t even an appropriate choice for any boulevard, based on height and shape.

Asa fellow horticultural specialist you are not wrong. The lateral branches on the Bradford pear have an extremely acute angle which makes them incredibly easy to split off, especially in high winds or during an ice storm. That was the main reason I didn't recommend planting these trees and honestly I wasn't even aware that they could spread so easily via seeds. Learn something new every day.

Also in KC area - every year at about this time I have so much rage seeing these outcompeting our redbuds and dogwoods. There are two giant ones on a church property along 291, just north of 70, and you can SEE the damage they've done in the woods along both sides for miles. And yet there they stand, continuing to spread their filth. It's disgusting that they've allowed that to go on like that.

They make pretty good firewood. I have a Fischer "Baby Bear" woodstove, so I burn everything down to 2".

I had to rip out so many Bradford Pears and Privet when I was clearing land. We used thorned blackberries and honey suckle to cover the perimeter fencing.

My dude, why are you not planting Arundinaria gigantea. That needs to be a priority in the southeast.

In the midwest it’s bush honeysuckle and autumn olive. Constant removal, but feel like I’m winning..

Husband and I found an invasive tree sapling growing in our yard one year, the dog kept trying to rip it up. Didn't recognize what it was, so I had to do some research (Google lens). It's was poisonous, leaves, stalk, all of it. We spent the day digging it up, down and all around the biggest of the roots. It hasn't come back. A few days later, I was walking the dog, and some neighbors had 3 of these trees planted (purposefully) in their front yard. So now we have to watch for those things spreading.

I hate Bradford pears, they are bad for the environment, they may have the nastiest smell a plant can make and they break easily and cause a mess in storms

Hate Bradford Pears.... I'd like to remove the ones in front of my house, but it's west facing and the evening sun bakes our house during the summer. Any suggestions? In NC

I had 5 big Bradford Pear trees that were along the sidewalk, in my front yard. I had them removed because I felt that they were dangerous to pedestrians and to traffic on the busy road that I live on. They are notorious for just randomly breaking apart because their structure is unstable.
