The US would like it if Russia foolishly fully engaged in Ukraine, the way the US did in Vietnam, Iraq and Afghanistan. The difference is Ukraine is not on the other side of the world from Moscow. Strategically different stakes at play require different solutions. Hypersonic missiles reduce the distance to DC, EU etc

If they go to Odessa I expect them to link up with Transnistria due to proximity. I wonder, though, if they would consider pushing a corridor all the way to Hungary; this would make it harder for the EU to dominate Hungary and they would be more free to be a thorn in the EU's side, which benefits Russia. If they do this, I wonder if they then might push a corridor all the way North and along the Polish border to Belarus to surround what's left of Ukraine and thus control imports and exports. I'm sure they don't want to fight an insurgency against the bulk of ethnic Ukrainians but to merely surround them may be doable.
