Great point on the Chinese components. As an fpv geek I have thought about it before how china basically has an infinite supply of fpv drones and if there was a war we would be lacking in the cheap fpv department. This is why I always think allowing china to have a monopoly on manufacturing is just so incredibly stupid from us. Why did we even let it ever happen. Even if it costs a lot of money, maintaining our own ability to manufacture is necessary.
@fridtjofnansen6743Ай бұрын
Naive capitalists who don't realise that not everyone plays by the "rules" because they can't help but jerk off to the cheap products.
@soul0360Ай бұрын
I agree. The answer to why, is Consumerism and Capitalism. We want cheap goods. Some of us, even if that means poor quality, or other compromises. National or environmental safety, means little to most people. Most people don't care, they just want "stuff". There's a reason, sites as Temu or Wish exist. And everyone in the supply chain want to make money. In many cases as much, as the market will bare, or even more. At the detriment of consumers (price gauging). We can't change these two kinds of behaviour, without external (governmental) intervention. If countries adversely effected in the way you describe. Decided to collectively put tariffs on imported goods. Based on the the amount of CO2 equivalent, used for transport, and possibly production. That could probably have an effect, as to onshoring much production again, in the west. For this to not have the same adverse effects, on said countries economies. And to not cause a trade war. Like the tariffs, that are currently proposed in the US. This would have to be implemented gradually. I'm guessing over a decade, maybe more. The funds that comes from the tariffs, could be earmarked, for supplying "cheap" loans. For improving production capacity, and transitioning to geen energy and infrastructure. If this succeded in onshoring production. It would be a major loss to the shipping industry. One of the most poluting industries. Forcing them to innovate faster, in green fuels. And it would stiffle the growth in countries like China. Meaning that they would not need, to continue building new coal plants, at the pace they currently do. They can't currently keep up, with their also expanding renewable energy infrastructure. Growing demand is simply to high, because of their growing production base. And their growing production base, is primarily, to supply cheap goods for the west. If implemented thoughtfully, and is a success. It would help national security, create jobs, and possibly have a positive impact on our wasteful culture. While benefiting the environment in so many ways. One downside. I'm Danish. And we have, the biggest shipping company in the world. So our national economy would take a bigger hit then most, in the west. I still think it would be worth it though.

Wow what a good reply @soul0360. I'm not an intellectual but I wasn't expecting that level of sophistication on BigMacs Battle Blog. Excellent a Global economics conversation. Including the background of climate catastrophe & ecological extinction (due to the CO2 in the atmosphere). All the global warming feedbacks are positive (i.e. exponentially increasing greenhouse effect). It'll ONLY take between 100-200k years for climate to stabilise with all the fossil fuels burnt to date. It'll be a different planet in a relatively few human generations. It doesn't appear to me as if Capitalism & Consumerism is going to suddenly cease, just because the 6th Mass Extinction is well underway. So I think We're all doomed😪 However there is a place Beyond Hope, Beyond Fucked. It's where I live😎 I think that, (Bourgeois Democratic) National Governments, don't really have much control over GLOBAL MEGA CORPORATIONS & the 1% of population who are Billionaires. It's theywho really run the Worlds' Capitalst Economy.

Last point. Attitude. Ukrainians go to work. Like guys in a Western military might go to the base the guys in Ukraine go to the trenches or front. They have a job to do. The guys who slowed the Russians in Hostomel on Feb 22 were National Guard conscripts, firemen and office staff who parked vehicles on the runways, shot down helicopters with machine guns and used artillery to make the runways unusable. Would a NATO unit be flexible enough to have that much common sense? I doubt it.

NATO will excel at some things and utterly fail at others. They have not prepared for the type of war that may be coming and so like the UK in WW2 they will have to learn lots of very hard painful lessons in the early days. War is brutal and unforgiving, you can't plan for that, they'll have to adapt as new challenges arise. Sadly the current doctrine appears to be very outdated and slow to react. That may be the biggest issue, reactionary doctrine rather than a proactive one.

All good points Joe. I read a lot about the first and second world war and you are right, especially in WWI, the professional BEF was more or less wiped out by the end of 1914. It was then left to the Territorials in 1915 to hold the line and then the huge volunteer civvie Kitchener army to really fight, and win, the war and from 1916 conscripts. Same in WWII; the regular British army in 1940's battle of France, culminating in Dunkirk, was bloody crap! Sorry, but they were. We tend to mythologise Dunkirk but I have read enough memoirs and reports from people involved in France in 1940 who said the British (regular) Army performed really poorly. Again, the conscripted British population helped to win the war. So yes, civilians win world wars because you are literally getting the best of society, a proper cross section.

Yeah the only thing I’d add is that the regulars in WW1 were excellent troops, yes they suffered massive casualties but they inflicted enormous losses on the Germans and held the line well.

By the way, Joe, all those Chinese parts that FPV hobbyists order, a lot of those components, e.g. flight controllers, ESCs, etc, are all Open Source -- hardware AND software. It may not actually be that hard to stand up production lines to churn out these components en masse, even in wartime conditions. I'm annoyed that I have to buy parts off Banggood and wait six weeks every time I crash one of my quads, but it doesn't have to be that way.
@ninemoonplanetАй бұрын
All of it open source? That's handy to know. A group of geeks could get a really good startup going and probably improve the drones, controllers to a higher level without some government dweeb in the way. A couple of electrical engineers and imagination. 👍
@benfowler1134Ай бұрын
@@ninemoonplanet Yep! I cannot think of any proprietary software in the flight controllers, ESCs, or radios at all -- all Open Source. Seem to remember some flight controller and ESC schematics and gerbers on Github. Even the radio control links have gone from proprietary crap (e.g. FrSky) to OpenLRS which give the expensive vendors a serious run for their money. The only gear in my cupboard that looks proprietary right now are the FPV goggles and the VTX receivers in it.

I don't think people want to fight for the UK, there is a general distrust that the government has the people's best interest in mind. So, yeah, sure that could be changed by offering a load of money. In other news, the Rouble has been falling off a cliff since August, another couple of months of this and the Russian population at large just will not be able to pay rent, buy food. I really don't think India has any reason to go to war. I don't think China has either. So, all things considered, the Russo - Ukraine war could well be over before the spring.
@nickevison391Ай бұрын
I dont know about that. No matter what happens to the Russian people, i suspect that as long as P*tin lives, Russia will keep prosecuting the war. He's tied to it now, and any compromise or final defeat will set the Oligarch vultures circling, waiting to bite the hand that feeds. If that means becoming a Chinese client state, Beggaring the country for a century, depopulating the east entirely, famines, anything. He simply cant stop and personally survive. Besides, (in his mind maybe) if Russia does achieve complete victory He'll have a whole population of "Cr*tters" that have been pre-vilified and dehumanized by propaganda that would provide a new and lucrative underclass to exploit or outright en*lave. Also, he'll have control of a giant percentage of the worlds affordable grain supplies that can be used to extort poorer or less self-sufficient countries (Even maybe India? Hes crazy enough to try it on at least)
