US troop reinforcements have begun arriving in Eruope as fears over Russia's troop build-up on Ukraine's borders increase.
The first contingent of 2,000 additional US soldiers arrived near Frankfurt overnight - with others touching down near Poland's border with Ukraine. The White House says the troops will protect eastern NATO members from potential Russian aggression. But Russia says they're worsening already high tensions in the region.
DW's Alexandra von Nahmen explains what's behind the US decision.

@@expansionone I think that’s a mischaracterisation of history. Former USSR countries were desperate to join NATO, after suffering decades of Soviet oppression. "Peace generates wealth, wealth generates overconfidence, overconfidence brings war, war brings poverty, poverty generates humility, humility brings peace again" Here is my take; if war breaks out between the two countries, I won't blame Russia, Ukraine or NATO, I will put all the blame on Germany. The West wants to provoke overextension of Russia - first and foremost economically, but also in terms of potential military conflicts - in order to unbalance and destabilize Russia with the long-term objective of regime-change. All these actions by the West that the media either downplays or just doesn't report are intended to lure Russia into reactions (usually portrayed as aggressions) that could be then used as starting points for further escalations. Russia is considered the weaker part of the Eastern alliance, hence it might seem a good idea to first crush Russia, incorporate the remains into the Western sphere of influence and then turn it into a front state against the West's main enemy China. For a more intelligent strategy like the Nixon/Kissinger approach during the 1970s the contemporary US political elite lacks the required perseverance, patience and affinity towards long-term thinking. Probably time is not on their side, too.

It wouldn't be. It is defensive preparations. America has not 100% committed to going into Ukraine, but if they do, it will likely be as Americans, not as members of NATO.
