I’ve always been apprehensive of those oil additives to stop leaks. I have a Disco TD5 which developed a crank seal leak, and like you thought I’d nothing to lose by adding a bottle of this stuff first. Low and behold it worked, saved a heap of work.
@BritannicaRestorations
@BritannicaRestorations Жыл бұрын
The Td5 does not have a rubber crank seal, so these additives will not work

Care to share what product you used? I have to get mine through a RWC here in Oz. ( Roadworthy certificate. Tougher than the MOT, but it's not an annual check.)

Clean up very well and go to some testers which are easier on you. If your keeping for yourself should be easier to get through than if your selling the car

@@BritannicaRestorations Thanks Mike, never had a TD5 before (Disco and RR V8’s) so just presumed it was rubber. Leak must have been coming from elsewhere but it has stopped so that’s a good thing.

Good thing you don't have to worry about cold stars in Canada. 🙄 Looking forward to the update on the leak.

Mike, there's something daft on the V8 oil pressure switch and the fuel pump. Mine wouldnt go until the oil pressure was up cranking for the pump to run. Just saying.

I'll be very interested to see if adding the additive sorts the crank seal Mike. I've got the very same situation and mine has only done 50 odd thousand miles.

Put my backpack on in 1989 (I think) and was away for 2 1/2 years round the world. When I got back to the UK, it was a big recession, so I came back to Canada. Never wanted to get involved with mechanics, but it was the only thing I knew and Land Rover owners at the time, had no one to repair their trucks or find parts

I really learned a lot in those 2 1/2 years - maybe one day I will tell you all, but it was an amazing time - would recommend travelling to any young person - get out of your own backyard!

I’d be interested in hearing your back-story Mike as I’m sure a lot of other people would also. I came across the channel a long time ago when you were going through an old engineering magazine I think, been hooked ever since. Owning a defender, a p38 and a discovery probably helps as well!!!

@@BritannicaRestorations I had good luck with it. I had a bit of a rear main seal leak on my wife’s discovery, too. I put some in the crank case and it hasn’t leaked since of course I have to put more in the next time I change the oil but I guess that’s a small price to pay for not having a rear main seal leak all over the place. I actually had a leaking faucet in the spare bathroom. And when I say leak, it was coming out in a steady stream. I shut the water off, pulled the cartridge and realized that the washers and seals were looking a little dry because it hasn’t been used in a while I threw the cartridge in some of the 8205 let it sit there for an hour wiped it out put it back in and it didn’t leak anymore, so it will swell up and refresh the rubber

OK! I ordered some The leak is minimal, not gushing out-just an annoying drip in the bottom of the bell housing

@@BritannicaRestorations good luck with it. It really seems to help dried out seals but if they’re broken, I doubt they would be much good. It did work on the disco, and I plan to put some more in when I change the oil this winter and it did Iwork quite well on that tap cartridge.
