Brilliant working through logically.....not to mention your knowledge of how the V8 oil pressure switch is used as a 'damage limitation device'!

I remember my father cussing about this switch when his V8-S would not start outside a shop, he got out of the car lifted the bonnet his arm disappeared down into the engine, then it started! My own SD1 cut out on the motorway one day and the AA came out and bypassed the switch! I bought a Ford Granada after that!

I think a lot of these 3.5 V8's have all but disappeared in cars and Land Rovers. Enthusiasts will probably know of this issue, but I had quite forgotten about it

Pity you didn't remember about the oil switch earlier, I have never heard that before. But running now, I was never a big fan of the thermostatic chokes, we had a lot of trouble with them on ford escort, sierra, cvh engines. People used to put manual chokes on them, I've had a p5b and a discovery V8, possibly because I'm British, I cant understand swapping s.u. carbs, for a holley. Probably as easy to fit the rover V8 fuel injection. Keep up the good work 👍

Excellent bit of detective work Mike. I didn't know about the fuel pump being linked to the oil pressure switch. Fortunately mine is still good but first place I'll check if and when.

Excellent. I had a similar problem on the 101 FC V8 twin carb. The military redudant systems installs a 3 way oil pressure valve wich woun't let the pump work if there is no oil pressure, except on first start that fuel pump works directly from ignition. Those valve switches use to fail often and sometimes we want to start the engine and there is no run.

If it's the same as my v8 sd1 - when the car is cranking it turns pump on. When started it allows pump to work when oil pressure is good via that switch.

Never knew about this. Would my 1984 V8 have this. And would it affect staring when hot? Mine always struggled after standing for 20 or so minutes. Anyway I prefer my 300Tdi. Thanks again for the great video Mike.

Are you running a square bore four barrel carb? (Edelbrock or Holley), if so your problem is probably down to the fuel boiling in the carb when you switch the hot engine off. What happens is that the fuel boils but the vaporised fuel is heavier than the air in the manifold, so the fuel vapour 'pours' into the manifold and when it eventually cools down it turns back into liquid fuel, this floods the engine. (Hence black smoke when it does start). The cure is a proper insulator between the carb and the manifold. (Not one of those crappy ones made of several sheets of thin aluminium and base gaskets).

Excellent Mike! Is this for all defender V8 carb? Because I asked my mechanic and he said that the oil pressure switch has nothing to do with the fuel pump. Also if we disconnect the oil press switch the engine will start up normally. I will ask my electrician and see. I am asking because if I havent move the car for a few days it takes few seconds to fire up with choke on and thought if the switch is not working properly. When ignition is on I hear the fuel pump though normally.

On the carb engines, the oil pressure switch cuts the fuel pump if there is no oil pressure
@trickster8635
@trickster8635 9 ай бұрын
Regardless of choke butterfly open or close, you should still get the engine to kick on fuel provided by the accelerator pump stroke. I reckon the oil pressure switch circuit has also been used to kill the ignition and the fuel pump, therefore no start regardless of fuel or not.
