No water filters, ferocerium rod or lighter, no compass and map pencil or notepad, no folding saw, no potassium iodine tablets, no extra change of wool socks, no flashlight?

Constant wind, rain and +4c is the biggest challenge. Everything gets soaked, insulation stops working, nothing ever dries. Calm weather and freezing conditions are easier. One thing I would like to know is: How do you power up your equipment, camera, phone, gps ?

36kg!! The ultra lite community need to design your kit! Would improve overall performance 200% at a guess if you did.

I totally agree with you, but I wonder what your winter ultralight gear list would look like. I think that the Marines and Soldiers who do end up in the field during winter conditions or work in the mountains do get a little more freedom with what gear they use compared to what's required during training.

@chris mcclain there's also ultralight winter mountaineering, which is going to have more concerns aligned with this application but is still lighter, alot of the improvement is just better design, and material science/technology, not always trade offs for weight savings.

I'm in Canada, got the same MSR Snowshoes with the extended tails as you. Guess I made a good choice if the USA military issues them. I'm not a snowshoer, got them for emergencies along with a hunting/icefishing sled and snowmobile suit. -40C and I'm warm as toast, I'd beef up on those mitts you got. Then again winter is warmer than it used to be, very few cold days so I wear spring clothing in February. Keep safe.

You'd be surprised to know what soldiers are capable of carrying. Winter contions usually allow for the use of sleds aswell which makes life a bit easier. But the pace of moving with all this kit during winter is around 1km/h

Family of Improved Load Bearing Equipment (FILBE) - Main Pack. He also has the FILBE Assault Pack clipped to the top. His ruck additionally appears to be modified with an ALICE frame/harness system, as the old metal frames are less prone to failure in cold weather than the plastic FILBE frame.
