NATO isn't perfect but the biggest criticism against it is how it didn't do enough to prevent atrocities in eastern Europe. Its Cold War mission needs to be redrawn.

Iceland not having an army doesn't prevent them from serving in NATO. They can can serve in the Norwegian military who has been tasked with patroling and keeping Iceland safe from foreign powers. Iceland's contribution to NATO might not be that impressive, but if you're one of us, you're one of us and we take care of our own. NATO is a caring family, that simple.
@lucasharvey89906 ай бұрын
I personally don't care if every country has a classic military. Some countries like Iceland are just so small it's a massive waste of resources for them to even try to make one. Iceland for example has like 400k people or something. That's like a single city's worth of people. That's nothing. You can't expect them to have an army, navy, and air force with so few people and being so far away from any agressive powers. I would expect, however, for countries like Iceland to specialize in certain things like cybersecurity or intelligence gathering or IDK something like that, that way they can still be of use to the collective without wasting time and resources making a classic military that would never be big enough to be of any use anyway... but IDK that's just me and I'm rambling.

I think NATO can improvement if each NATO country takes on a role that suits the country, there are NATO countries with little temperament that other countries do not shy away from but are good at solving problems with talking, precision and well-thought-out tactics. To ensure that NATO also has less expensive and less advanced weapons, NATO countries could make weapons to prevent in poor regions.

1:16 what would happen, hypothetically, if a NATO member becomes a dictatorship after joining?
@simplyaugis98646 ай бұрын
There is no mechanism for expulsing such countries. They would likely remain a NATO member unless they decude to withdraw themselves. However, if the country in question becomes too friendly with some other nefarious countries (or buy their equipment) there is a possibility of NATO members bestowing sanctions on the coubtry in question. Some time ago, the US refused to sell the Patriot SAM system to Turkey (I don’t remember the cause of that), so the Turks turned to Russia to buy their air defense solution (pretty sure it’s the S-300, but too lazy to check ATM). Such a complex system often requires ties or even some military personel from the supplier. As such, the US did not allow the sale of F-35 Lightning II stealth fighters to Turkey, as Russian operators in Turkey could then record the radar signature of the aircraft (a big no-no). That’s one example I can think of that is kinda related, but yeah, here it is. While NATO does try to uphold its values, it is not as overreaching as to be able to immediately take action against a country that abandons democracy.
