I still can't figure out how to transition one image completely to another. Should be ridiculously simple...

@Etcetera I figured it out. Make the Merge operation "out," and then key Mix at 0, then go to the frame at the end of the fade and key the Mix to 1. (You can also do 1 to 0) This should fade completely between the two merged images.

I was doing well up until this video, none of this stuff works for me. The foreground image becomes white and the the text isn't showing up. It all blends together for some reason.

I'm having a similar problem. The two elements are dissolved together, like the foreground element is partially transparent. Did you ever figure out how to fix this?

Update: I think I figured it out: you have to add a node called "Unpremultiplied" (also has divide by alpha symbols on it) from the right click menu, between the A source and the Merge Node itself. Not sure if this will always work but it's working so far. This isn't show in the (otherwise excellent) video above so maybe it reflects a change in the program since the time he made it.

Update again: I later realized that it's important to check the box "A" (alpha) on the channels for source A in the merge node. This eliminates the need to insert the "Unpremulitiplied" node. However this whole "premultiplying" attribute turns out to come up a lot. For instance in doing fades (dissolving out the A source) sometimes you will get brightness flashes, and you have to check the "Unpremultiplied" box on your *Write* node. I added a shadow effect to a comp, which gave weird results on render, until I got the Premult settings adjusted. Upshot: Premult state really matters a lot in compositing. If you are getting weird results, go through and check this, it appears in various places.

So, when you're getting more advanced with a bunch of layers, can you put more than just 2 images together at a time or does it need to keep on dividing down until only 1 merge node is left? Just as is here it seems like this will take up a lot of visual space quickly.

Hello is there a way to use masks created in Tiff format to isolate the subject and merge it with a background? I did not shoot with green screen and unfortunately the background has some similar hue as the subject at times. The parametric masks I did create were mostly successful in masking the subject though.

I am starting out with Natron and looking for a node that is the opposite of Merge. Something like SPLIT or FORK. For example, I use Read to read in an image. I then want to copy this image, but there is only one output for Read. Searched everywhere and cannot find it.

Guess you figured that out already, but every node can have as many outputs as you need. And then you can connect different forks or nodes to different writers or viewers or merge them as you please.

Everytime I try to import an image or video an error message pops out. The software sadly becomes useless this way.

Hmm don’t do that. On the bottom where it says viewer1 then you right click and then options come up and then you click image and the read!!!

I'm not going to lie natron is a bad program if you are serious about editing videos or doing effects

Natron copies Nuke which is the industry standard for compositing. Hence Natron is the best to learn if you are really serious. Or you can learn the non-commercial version of Nuke.
