The localization adds to this reference, since “Wagahai”, an archaic and pretentious first-person pronoun, is apparently what Soseki uses to refer to himself in Japanese. The titular cat of the book uses the same pronoun, which creates irony because it gives a greater status to him despite being the pet of a normal teacher. I can only assume it’d be another irony to have the neurotic and self-deprecating Soseki Natsume of DGS use such a lofty pronoun for himself!
