Thanks for the information. When I heard that you are a dentist I thought that I would run this by you (full disclosure I'm a retired Ph D biochemist albeit 1974 vintage!!) and spent 40 years in research. One problem with ALL mouthwashes is that they indiscriminately kill all mouth bacteria including the beneficial micro-flora genera. Many of these bugs (I can provide a list) are essential for a long and healthy life! There are some 10 genera of bacteria in the mouth (mostly living at the back of the tongue) that reduce dietary nitrate in the saliva to nitrite and they are absolutely essential and literally lifesaving. Nitrates from the diet (greens, beets etc) are transported from the stomach (via blood) to the salivary glands and from there to the mouth. In the mouth, the tongue micro-flora reduce these nitrates to nitrites. When the saliva is swallowed, the nitrites of course return to the stomach and there they are further reduced to nitric oxide (NO). Hopefully many are aware that NO is one of the most important cell-signaling factors yet discovered in all of medical science (see 1992 Nobel Prize in medicine) and NO is essential for maintaining vascular health including the prevention of high blood pressure, pulmonary hypertension, heart disease, dementia, and erectile dysfunction among many others (a large percentage of the drugs MD's proscribe for high blood pressure often would not be needed if the population was able to produce NO as we are intended through our evolution). Our modern life style (including modern dentistry -- e.g., mouthwash, fluorides in water and toothpaste etc) is broadly and significantly reducing NO production in a majority of the population and the decreasing life spans, heart disease, Alzheimer's, and other vascular and circulatory problems are among of the many consequences. Compounding the problem is that NO gas -- and it is also highly reactive and as such has a half-life of less than a second so the body needs to be synthesizing it (via a 3 electron process) constantly. Because NO is a gas there will never be an "NO pill" from a bottle. NO deficiency has to be fixed in the body by repairing the biochemistry -- including mouth bacteria. Bottom line -- I would like a mouthwash to freshen but not kill micro-organisms of the mouth. What do you think?

Have you found an answer for this? What do you currently use?

@@AJ-ku9jz I think that there might be many different answers or things that could work -- including not using a mouthwash at all? If you search for it on YT you can find a lot of attempts to solve this problem. Many of them use mixture of things like mannitol, sodium bicarbonate, sodium chloride, sodium nitrate, essential oils etc. I like the idea of mannitol, bicarbonate and chloride but I do not like to use sodium salts -- even if I'm not planning to swallow it I'm not crazy about putting hundreds of milligrams of sodium in my mouth. I try to eat low sodium diet (target 1000 to 1500 mg of sodium/day). So I tried a solution of potassium chloride and mannitol. If I could have found food-grade potassium nitrate I might have added that? But for something much simpler just a liter of bottled water with a 1/2 teaspoon of lemon juice with potassium chloride also makes a refreshing nice mouth wash. Nowadays I water pick with bottled water -- I just swallow it to get the benefit of the water for hydration as well, then brush with a non-fluoride tooth paste and rinse with more bottled water that I also swallow!🤣😂 I don't waste it! It seems to keep my teeth clean and I MUST BE MAKING NO. My osteoarthritis in my hands is no longer painful and I can play musical instruments again. Also there is this -- make what you will of it! LOL I'm 80 so erections were not something in my daily life to put up with and or to enjoy -- but after about a month on a high nitrate diet and non-antibacterial mouth wash I started to get them kind of "at will" so to speak and I usually wake up in the morning with a little engorgement -- if you know what I mean. That had not been happening for the last 15 years before. Perhaps I am jumping to conclusions but that is what I AM experiencing at the moment? 🙂 Thoughts?

What I see the substitute for xylitol
@Thethingswellmake2 ай бұрын
I wouldn't substitute anything. I would just leave it out if you're set against using it. Xylitol helps with anti-cavity properties while adding sweetness. You have to be careful with other sweeteners in products meant for teeth/mouth.

can u add hydrogen peroxide ,,,,,,,,,is it ok to add any peppermint oil is it safe if u swallow little bit of essential oils while gargling////////////
@Thethingswellmake8 ай бұрын
I don't have a problem with occasional hydrogen peroxide rinses. (A similar product is generally used for whitening.) I'm unsure about adding it here, though, because I don't know if it might react with any of the other ingredients. Peppermint essential oil is generally safe to ingest in small amounts. I have even used it to flavor recipes before. In Spain, it is common for essential oils to be accompanied by "dosage instructions" on how to take them internally. Peppermint, for example, is available in a "food grade" form with specific information on ingestion. In the US, where litigation is more prevalent, companies are extremely cautious and frequently advise against the ingestion of essential oils. I think it's their way of protecting themselves. As long as you are careful with it and are using pure, distilled essential oils, you should be fine. You could also use a peppermint extract if you are concerned about it.
