The key here is to avoid some patronising narrative that suggests the farmers don't know what they're doing, or are out to harm the planet. So often, people turn up with a clip board and say, "Hi, I'm here to [bribe you to do everything differently, because you're selfish and doing it all wrong]". And then they're surprised when they're told to sod off - this, despite the best of intentions, and, indeed, perfect willingness on the part of the farmers themselves to explore new things and manage farms more sustainably. There's a psychological, diplomatic hurdle here. Worth checking out the GWCT 'farmer clusters' approach in the UK. Has been hugely successful at - rather than dictating to farmers what they should/shouldn't be doing - encouraging a more bottom-up self-willed conservation movement.

How is this natural capital accounting? This is simply a description of a tax to provide incentives to change behaviour. Natural Capital Accounting requires us to put a price tag on 'the reef' he describes, e.g. 100 million dollars and then make other decisions based on that number. We have no idea how to price these things accurately, and those pushing the Natural Capitalism idea seem to totally miss the problem with representing reefs with economic values- they then become subserviant to $

Great idea, I am off to the Alps with a load of dynamite. I will quarry the Alps flat for stones unless the Swiss tourism industry pay me a truckload and buy my Eco system services.

Great if the natural capital mechanisms could be used to help kick of the UN GCF fund. Salut!
