Thanks so much! My 11 yr old Girl Scout was very excited to learn how to make natural insect repellent! I still use a “sulfur Sox” to keep off Chigger.

Wow, you are brilliant. Before this I had issues with staining, this has solved it!

I did it with the alcohol for 4 days! I think the alcohol way is much better!

I prefer the alcohol version as well. Very simple and works well.

I wondered what you were going to use to distill that,I saw one where the guy used a presto pressure cooker but he had a copper coil and he bought a piece of lab ware to separate the water from the oil, yours is more simple and cheaper if the water doesn't dilute it so much that it does not work. I hope that works, I grew some Firebush(hamelia patens) that is supposed to neutralize a sorts of bite, poison ivy and basically be a cure all fore many different things but so far it has not worked on anything I've tried it on. I have some beautyberry seeds started I hope it works. Thanks, maybe that will help someone.

Does it have to be the native beauty berry?
@TigerCreekFarm4 ай бұрын
The native beauty berry is the only I have experience with.

Would you be comfortable putting this on your dogs? I’m not real comfortable with the commercial stuff I use on my dogs because of the strong chemicals.
@TigerCreekFarm Жыл бұрын
Absolutely. Just spray or pour it in your hands then work it onto the dog.

try using acetone, it doesnt uptake as much of the chlorophyll. the leaves are as brittle as with alcohol so im asuming that all oils are striped from them. I will update you if I dont get chiggers next time i go to my fishing hole
@TigerCreekFarm Жыл бұрын
I don't think using acetone as a stripping/carrying agent is a good idea. You would be wiping it on your skin and that is counterproductive to what we are trying to accomplish here.

Just wondering, why not just use the juice in the pot instead of throwing it away?
@TigerCreekFarm Жыл бұрын
This is the poor man's way distillation method. The steam allows us to collect the essential oils from the leaves needed to repel the mosquitoes. The remaining juice in the pot doesn't contain the oils anymore so it is not good to use.

So how well do you think it works as a repellent?

It has been serving me very well.

Store bought insect repellent with deet. It works to keep bugs away but it will also take the paint off of metal surfaces, it will remove sharpy pem marks off of any surface. Try that with regukar household cleaners. Natural repellants are better for your health - non cancer causing stuff. We used deet repellant to remove new paint off so the metal flange ring groove surfaces can be clear of paint for a good metal to metal seal. That is how potent deet us on your skin or clothes. Or breathed in through the lungs. Use caution with chemicals. Deet can also de-fat the skin on your gands and fingers causing chronic skin conditions. Nasty stuff.
