Thanks for that! Steve from the garden gave me the info, I just passed it along and my failed experiment, lol. Thanks for subscribing, means a lot. Stay Well!!! Will check your channel out as well and subscribe.

Steve got me kind of inspired to try some hydroponics. You might be on to something with the water pH increasing back up to 8. Sweet spot for most nutrients is in that 6-6.5 range. Definitely pH will affect how the nutrients are absorbed into the plants. Great experiment Brian, if time and ambition are on my side I will try to give this a go as well.

I think had I stayed on top of the pH it would have been a closer finish. Now, with keeping an eye on it the natural bin is doing fine. My point to all of this is you do not need to purchase amendments and fertilizers to grow nice crops. Thanks for watching Rick, Stay Well!!!

Wow, Brian, I suppose you'll have to make one change at a time to the all natural formula to figure out what was the growth suppressant. Perhaps plants are more susceptible to high pH in water when they don't have the microbes of the soil surrounding their roots to mediate that. Fascinating! ~ Sandra

I like to be on the unconventional side, sometimes it does not work out (initially). I basically used concentrations of nutrients I would use as a foliar feed to my plants. Perhaps the pH was the culprit. Thanks for watching! Stay Well!!!

Thanks for the channel shout out Brian! I like that you tried natural nutrients in the hydroponic system. The usual way to provide natural nutrients is by using fish in a tank and you circulate the water between the fish tank and the grow bin. Isn't it amazing how fast the lettuce grows in the hydroponic system? 30 days and you have a head of lettuce ready for harvest. These systems can help keep us supplied with from fresh veggies during the cold months of the winter.

This is way easier than trying to fight winter in a cold frame for sure. Fresh greens for a salad last night and a spinach omelet for Kathy's breakfast this morning. It is truly amazing how fast things grow in the hydroponics. It seems like they get to a certain point then just explode with growth, wish I had started them sooner. I like trying different things, sure am glad I set up one bin the way you prescribed. Question. Do you add more nutrients to the solution as time goes on? Thanks for your support Steve! Stay Well!!!
@stevefromthegarden11357 ай бұрын
@@brianseybert192 I did add a small dose of nutrients in early Feb. Maybe a 1/4 of what I added originally. (at roughly the 4 month mark) That will carry me through until I am growing outside again. If I wanted to keep the bin going longer than the end of April, I would drain it, wash it and start fresh.

I grow microgreens for the same reason! We eat a big broccoli micro green salad every day! You guys would have a hard time convincing me that the hydroponics provide more food for a given growing space, especially when you factor in time! My broccoli micro greens are ready in six days and provide my wife and I with a big salad for three days, from a 10-20 tray. I put the spent root bound Promix in the compost, or use them to fill up containers for potato growing😇.

@@WhatWeDoChannel I only did wheat grass a couple times, once for worm food and as a request from a friend. You are so correct how quickly they grow, a great way to get a nutritious crop quickly. Like using the spent growing medium for compost and container potatoes. I used leaf mold as a growing medium. Stay Well!!!

Sure am glad I did a conventional system as well, I just gotta be different, lol. Big mistake was not keeping an eye on the pH. Things are kinda picking up with it though. It is awful nice to have fresh greens for salads and sandwiches, I"ll do it again. Thanks for watching! Stay Well!!!

The difference between the two bins is amazing! I reckon the organic nutrients need soil microbes to break them down and make them bioavailable.
@brianseybert1926 ай бұрын
That could very well be true. Once I stayed on top of the pH things did improve, but never caught up with the conventional bin. Stay Well!!!

Actually, since I have been keeping better track of the pH and added some more compost and worm castings, things are picking up in the experiment bin. Thanks for watching! Stay Well!!! JUst subscribed to your channel, sure I will learn a thing or two.
