Today's video:
Vitamin B12, the Achilles’ heel of veganism or just another example of the animal farming industries clutching at straws?
In their 2022 We Eat Balanced campaign, the AHDB advocate for the consumption of animal products by stating that it’s a natural source of vitamin B12.
However, when we consider that the majority of the animals we consume are either supplemented with B12 in the first place, or the minerals required for them to produce B12, it becomes apparent that this isn’t even true.
But more to the point, does it even matter if we get vitamin B12 naturally or unnaturally? The idea that something being natural means that it is better is clearly a misguided idea. There are many things that are natural but clearly terrible, such as certain diseases like anthrax, and there are many things that are unnatural but clearly good, such as medications like synthetic antibiotics.
In fact, the way that we live is completely unnatural, from the homes we live in and the clothes we wear, to even the food we eat.
Animal agriculture as an industry is unnatural due to it being a human construct that revolves around domestication, selective breeding, artificial insemination, and the list goes on. Even the bananas we eat are a product of selective breeding and are therefore unnatural - interestingly without being selectively bred bananas would naturally have been almost inedible.
So what is natural is not what is relevant, and in the case of B12 we can get what we need through eating fortified plant foods and taking a supplement. So we have the choice to either get B12 that way, or through supporting an industry that is not only one of the key drivers of the climate crisis, but also causes unimaginable suffering and cruelty to animals.

Interesting video, I've heard the B12 arguments against veganism before. I'm not vegan, but I eat mostly game meat, as in Kudo, Warthog, Sprinkbok etc. These aren't "farmed" nessisarily so does that mean the B12 from them is better than in store bought beef?

It's actually worse than that. There really isn't anything unnatural in existence. If a thing exists it is natural. If humans do a thing it is human nature to do it. Unnatural tends to be often used as a moral descriptor, IE the idea that some practices are wicked/unnatural. But more recently it's come to describe the difference between something that exists on its own in the natural world and something that is created by human artifice, IE artificial. But even this leads to problems. Bread is artificial because it doesn't grow on trees. We have to use artifice to make it. But does anyone consider bread artificial? No one does, though it actually is. Some ingredient in a vegan meat replacement with a long Latin/Greek name seems obviously artificial to most of us, whole bread doesn't. Yet both of them are. It makes much more sense simply to judge foods on how we like them, what effect they have on us, and how they impact the world around us. Molecules and compounds don't care if they are artificial or not. Why should we?

Joe, why is it that vegans ignore the fact that there are honest hardworking families that own and operate farms on which they raise livestock 100% on pasture using regenerative farming practices such as rotational grazing? They do not use any of the "cides" used in plant ag nor do their livestock require antibiotics, hormones or B12 supplementation. These primary producers also do NOT condone intensive farming, whether it be animal or plant agriculture. I am genuinely curious.

@Hamster Mohammad I saw what you had to say about the word below. And it also seems you are a vegan. All snark, insults, and trolling aside - what is your problem with the word, exactly? Is it the etymology? Is it the way the word is being used? I can't really tell. But the word isn't "meaningless" - words gain meaning based upon their usage over time. Language evolves. I'm sure you know that. So what it is about this word in particular that you find so repugnant?

I've been vegan for 4 years and I did a blood test a couple of weeks ago. I got my results back and I had to speak to a doctor about my B12 as this came up. I arranged a call and I was expecting to hear I was low in B12 because of what I've read online. My doctor told me I'm over my B12 and asked if I took supplements which I replied yes and she advised me to stop taking my supplements. So I'm getting natural B12 from my vegan diet! I was shocked to hear this and very happy, it demolishes another lie told by the meat industry! Also nothing else came up, my iron , vit c, all the things I was subconsciously worried about are absolutely fine. Just a nice feeling to know my body is thriving.

I would probably advise about completely stopping taking the supplements. Maybe the dosage is just too high, so you are over your b12 because you take too much every day. Maybe try only taking them half as often, as not taking them at all could have serious long term consequences.

Suntanning or supplements for D3 are the only viable option for anyone. As for Retinol, K2, DHA/EPA, amino acids, bioavailable calcium, zinc and iodine (just to name a few) are ALL extractable from vegan diet... Zinc is easily found in Pumpkin seeds), Iodine and bioavailbe B12 aewfound in Nori seaweed, whereaas calcium, amino acids, K2, retinol and DHA/EPA are easily sourced from a variety of vegetables, nuts, seeds, legumes and fruit. Oh and one other thing that people LOVE to complain that vegans 'lack' is Iron... which is easily found in non-heme form in say Tofu... but its been shown in peer-review studies that non-heme Iron is actually HEALTHIER for the body, and because its found in such copious amounts in Tofu, you'll absorb enough... and if you mix Vitamin C rich foods with Tofu, that will increase non-heme Iron absorption. I am indeed more concerned about my health... which is why I went vegan over 6 years ago and examined relevant peer-review studies on widely available vegan foods to understand which ones have what and how to mix/match them, and I've been healthier compared to when I was eating meat.

You just give the facts, and that facts show that we don’t need to torture, abuse, assault, violate, or murder animals. It’s just not necessary these days so we have no excuses. If those of us who have the privilege of choice would choose the right one, we could end a lot of suffering. I’ve been vegan for more than 2 years now and have gained clearer skin, better gut health, easier and more consistent menstrual cycles, more energy, and the comfort of knowing that I’m hurting as few beings as possible.

Unfortunately, all the information about vegans needing to take synthetic supplements comes from the meat & dairy industries and the pharma companies who make the synthetic supplements. The truth is all that as long as gut bacteria have cobalt and certain other nutrients, they produce vitamin B12. No need for synthetic supplements. And absorption of the natural B12 coenzymes takes place in the mouth, throat, esophagus, bronchial tubes, upper small intestines and along intestinal tract. Source: Dr. Vivien Vitrano, who studied B12 extensively for decades, was a strong advocate against synthetic vitamins, and was a vegan who lived to be 93 with no disease or deficiency.

@@lbeschrich Several foods are natural sources of MSG: tomatoes and olives for example. Do you avoid those too? MSG is not bad for you in moderation, you just have to drink plenty of water because it contains sodium so will dehydrate you. And I'm not sure why you believe the fact bacteria can grow on it to be bad. Bacteria grows on all living things, fungi included. It's just that fresh food has a safe level of bacteria, and when it's expired that bacteria has reached an unsafe threshold. Nutritional yeast is completely safe. Do you not eat other sources of yeast like bread and beer?
@RogueAstro85
@RogueAstro85 2 жыл бұрын
@@lbeschrich Bacteria grows on all organic and inorganic matter, it's not specific to nutritional yeast. Viruses can only be replicated by another organism's DNA or RNA, they do not "grow" on things, they replicate using the host's cells natural reproduction pathways. Mycoviruses have never been found to infect humans so there's no need to fear getting a virus from yeast or fungi. There is a chance of a mycovirus creating toxic compounds that can be harmful to humans, but food agencies take food poisoning VERY seriously and not a single report in the English-speaking world has been published on any contaminated nutritional yeast that I could find. The fear towards MSG is scientifically unfounded and is rooted in xenophobia towards Asian immigrants. Plenty of common foods naturally contain MSG, yet no MSG fear-mongering blogs will tell you to avoid tomatoes and mushrooms because of their naturally occuring MSG. Everything you have said has no basis in any literature I have read. I'd love to see any research that you have on the subject since I'm a nurse specializing in research on infectious diseases and find public health concerns interesting.

Well that's great, most long term vegans for over 25 years (myself included) have never taken B12 supplements. Now it's turned into a marketing hysteria targeting vegans with fear of deficiency. But it's not because you don't wash your vegetables well, it's because you naturally have B12 along with all the other beneficial bacteria in your gut. As long as the gut bacteria have cobalt and certain other nutrients, they produce vitamin B12. But it's also present in tons of plant foods like lentils and all seeds.

B12 is synthesized and absorbed in the small intestine (not just further down in the intestine as the commonly circulated myth goes) from cobalt, which is found in ample amounts in fruits: *_«In man, physiological amounts of vitamin B12 (cyanocobalamin) are absorbed by the intrinsic factor mediated mechanism exclusively in the ileum. Human faeces contain appreciable quantities of vitamin B12 or vitamin B12-like material presumably produced by bacteria in the colon, but this is unavailable to the non-coprophagic individual. However, the human small intestine also often harbours a considerable microflora and this is even more extensive in apparently healthy southern Indian subjects. We now show that at least two groups of organisms in the small bowel, Pseudomonas and Klebsiella sp., may synthesise significant amounts of the vitamin.»_* *_«Human jejunal and ileal contents and ileostomy effluents were examined for the presence of free intrinsic factor. This was detected in 9 out of 10 jejunal and three out of five ileal aspirates and in one of three ileostomy effluents studied. The intrinsic factor in the ileal effluent was shown to be physiologically active. The presence of free intrinsic factor in the small intestine has considerable physiological significance in maintaining the enterophepatic circulation of vitamin B12. It would also permit the absorption of any free vitamin B12 produced by ileal bacteria.»_* *_«The content of the Co [cobalt] in 5 μl of apple, pear and Korean mandarin juice was identified as 150, 45 and 100 pg, respectively.»_*

People should look out for the stuff that says "added B12" as otherwise there are lots of other B vitamins in it but not B12. The B12 which is added is the same as in vitamin pills. The factories add it to the growing medium and the yeast soak it up. I once wrote to Engevita and they confirmed this.

No such thing as separate B-complex vitamins. They're called "complex" because they're all included in a group. Lentils are loaded with B12, just like any plant food that contains B complex. And anything fortified doesn't count, as it 's synthetic and the body can't absorb it nutritionally.

Bang on as usual Ed! I live in India and whenever any non-vegan questions me about B12, I just ask them to search on flipkart and amazon where they will find B12 supplements for cows/buffalos/chickens etc. being sold. My rely is this: Instead of recycling the supplement by murdering an animal, I just directly take the supplement! ;p

If Portugal is anything like most countries, "grass fed" is just a label that denotes a certain portion of their diet is grass. For instance, in the US the only requirement for beef to be labeled "grass fed" is that the cows are fed grass during the last 6 months of their life. This doesn't specify the quality or source of the grass and I can guarantee that the grass farms are not well-maintained to ensure soil quality. I don't know how it is in Portugal, but for most of the world the amount of meat consumption requires that animals be factory farmed, malnourished, and supplemented to meet the demand.
@fieldofreeds8581
@fieldofreeds8581 2 жыл бұрын
@@RogueAstro85 actually in the US there is no longer an approved definition of “grass fed” they got rid of it in 2016. It’s all verified by third parties now, so it’s even more disingenuous than before. Generally though, by the standards of the previous US “grass fed” label, cows were fed from grasses and hay for most of their life but usually “finished” with grain for the last couple months of their lives to fatten them quicker, since grass-fed cattle usually take an additional year to get to “market weight”. The term “grass finished” means that they are fed grasses up until they are slaughtered so I guess that’s more true to what consumers assume… but even before the USDA stopped regulating the labels, their auditing process for the labels was done from a desk, there wasn’t any required visit to the farm, so they can easily lie about it. All of it is and always was, a scam.

Ed, I understand that our ancestors got much of their B12 from the untreated water that they drank as well as from the bits of soil that they ingested with their food. Obviously we don't want to go back to drinking untreated water, but I've wondered for some time if it would be possible to add B12 to water once it's been processed. After all this is commonly done with fluoride and other additives. It would ensure that everybody got enough B12, whatever their diet.
@lou__ley
@lou__ley 2 жыл бұрын
Such a smart idea! Unless maybe the issue is it would oxidize (or whatever happens to B12 over time) so that it's no longer bio-available/inert? Probably that's not the issue, though, so much as our leaders don't see this as a significant public health concern (but let's keep subsidizing beef or else everyone will starve lol). But I love this idea!

I’ve been vegan for 3 years, mostly eat home grown or market fruit and veg. I had a blood test a few weeks ago for the first time since going vegan. B12, iron ect are all good. If you eat processed foods, packet food or even worse dead food ie meat. You will most likely experience some sort of deficiency. Try eating just fruit and berries for a few days and see how you feel. “If you want to live eat foods that are alive”.
