The board game discussion at 28:12 was priceless. My colleagues at work think I’m weird because I can’t talk to them about the latest shows on Netflix. They ask me what I do in my spare time and I say spend time with my children and lift weights in my garage. Yeah, I’m the weird one. There was a time when I felt guilty for spending too much time away from my children lifting weights. But I had an epiphany: part of the role of a father is to inspire through example. Kids see dad in the garage grinding and they naturally want to join in. This is a rarely mentioned benefit of the home gym vs. commercial gym.

One of my male power fantasies is the knight Jean Parisot de la Valette. He was the grandmaster the knights Hospitaller and defended Malta in the great siege of Malta in 1565. De la Valette was 70 years old at the time of the siege and he also founded Valletta, the capital of Malta. In his younger years he was present during the great siege of Rhodes, later he was captured by Ottoman pirates and becoming a galley slave for a year (he was 48 at that time) and he also became govenor of Tripoli. Where we could have developed the philosophy and culture it was stopped for a 1000 years. We were also starved for atleast 200 years by the British and we weren't developed enough to get good nutrition. In India right now parents will tell you to focus on studies rather than sports because we have a lot of competition for basic jobs so the culture has changed a lot. There has been improvements recently but i feel it will take more time. Also your observation of Indians usually being frail would be mostly accurate for my parents generation I've seen my generation atleast in my family we are all tall and in my case broad shouldered too (we are taller 5'10 on average). One more thing has been that many Indians have always seen their own culture as inferior to western culture and have abandoned their own ancestors culture. I find a puzzling that people think common folk didn't train back in the day. Training your body through physical activity is one of the most natural behaviours there is - even animals like cats and wolves do it (cats even instinctively do "rehab" exercises when recovering from injuries). That is also where the instinct to play comes from. Children and young animals play to develop physical and mental fitness.

Medieval English society actually gives us a great example of progressive overload. The peasantry were very strongly encouraged to engage in the art of longbow shooting. From the time he was a boy until he was a man grown a guy would hone his skills with the longbow, gradually getting bigger and bigger bows with higher draw weights. This meant that, in times of war, the English could have huge amounts of highly skilled archers at their beck and call. Some of the war bows went up to drawn weights of 180-200 lbs. Imagine the strength it takes to perform the cumbersome act of drawing a bow of that weight.

My grandpa dated our ancestry 600 years back in the North of France where we are from and this video got my blood pumping to honour my ancestors and their victories over danger and death. On the medieval training, I'd love a video on it!! I know unilateral training was the thing back in the day, having no access to barbells and dumbbells and the like. but somehow men still developed thick aesthetic and symmetrical physiques. It would be interesting to have a "medieval/1800s strongman" style of training program. I so agree with you that physical development is key. I've never been able to put it into words, but @45:00 summed it up perfectly. Since I started training, things have not stopped improving, not just physically but everywhere else as well. But generally the drawing movement will train primarily the back and biceps (maybe some Back delts too) kinda like pull day. But i cant imagine that big of a involvement of the Triceps, Neck and chest. A swordsman may not be that strong at pulling, but he trains his complete upper body. The movement with the swords plus heavy armor are more diverse Stimulus to muscle groth. So its only natural, that he would be able to achieve a more well rounded physique. the main issue of moddern people in my eyes is the disconnect from nature and the insane believe that men is above nature simply because we have it easy right now. Easy is not the norm and there are many threats lurking in the shadows and when people can separate themselves from those threats it doesnt mean the threat goes away it simply make it not a danger for now until this separation is gone. Best example I am out of a culture that has to deal with wolfs till today and now here in germany everyone wants to repopulate "nature" with tons of wolf all these people think wolfs are just some cushy animal that can just be cuddled like a baby sheep or something. They are so disconnected from reality that they literally open thew doors to the threats that lurk in the shadow. And the believe that we are better than our ancestors cause we come later is insane we are regressing in body and mind at a neck breaking speed and ones reality hits us things will get really bad really quick.

@benn Conner, a lot more, especially during winter. Look into how many festivals and other gatherings they had, often lasting for days or weeks. Even 50 years ago people had a lot more free time. Think about how many pubs/social clubs, sports clubs, societies and other hobby type clubs there used to be, all established and thriving at that time because people had plenty of leisure time. The cost of living was much lower with a single earner supporting a family, plus most people happily ‘stayed in their social lane’ not being bombarded 24/7 with a narrative to scramble up the greasy pole because you’re missing out on your ‘best life’ and x or y is the way to get it. Keeping up with the joneses did not develop naturally, it was planted in the mind.
