A couple of years ago I went there on a dune vehicle tour. The guide warned us that we might not see any horses on the beach since they really only go there to get relief from biting flies. Notice their swishing tails in the video. The tour didn't disappoint, however. We turned off the beach and up into the dunes where there's a whole neighborhood of houses that are only accessible by 4WD vehicles. The horses were all scattered there in people's backyards and along the trails. Amazing!

My Heaven. My soul has never been more at peace than it is when I'm on Carova 4x4 beach. Go off season, a whole other obx most don't see, and in my opinion a world better. Quiet. Nature. Peace. I wish for everyone to experience this.

Looks like between Corolla and Carova towards the Virginia line. We see then on our bike rides through maritime forest from Back Bay NWF and False Cape SP then into the beach at low tide south to the NC line and beyond. Magical.

How would a horse react to this oceanfront if it lived its entire life hundreds of miles inland? The coast is a visual and sonic phenomenon unlike anything else.

No, that usually means they are swishing away flies. Those barrier islands have truly terrible biting insects, especially once you get into the dunes and away from the ocean breezes. Horse’s ears are a better indicator of their mood. Years ago I stopped with my family at the Assateague Island to use the beach. There were very large signs saying how the horses were wild and could be dangerous. I fully intended to keep my distance but no one told the horses. After our swim, my friend and I went back to the car to get our things to change because we didn’t want to sit in wet , sandy swimsuits for the long ride home. Not knowing we would need our bags my dad had packed them at the bottom of everything. We ended up unhooking the boat trailer to access the back of the station wagon and unloading most of the luggage. I was bent over my bag when I heard a horse snort right behind me. Looking around I realized we were surrounded by a group of “hooligan horses “ intent on ransacking our things. They refused to be scared away, so my friend and I climbed up on the boat and watched as the ponies pawed through the bags and stole cookies and things. After they got bored, we got down, repacked the car and got changed. My family had missed the excitement because they stayed to swim longer. We tried to tell them that our lives had been threatened by “ evil” horses but they wouldn’t believe us. I think it began to sink in once we got home and my mom was unpacking mangled kitchen items, like a chomped roll of foil and loaf of bread. She really understood after we developed the pictures I took of the “ assault”. It was particularly ironic because we were parked right in front of the “ beware of horses” billboard. I think this must be the origin of Bad Horse. ( for any Dr Horrible’s Sing Along Blog) 😁

@@chollystaunton9581 Yes, absolutely. The horse I met was being cared for by people. It may have been a rehab -not sure, it was decades ago. In fact it is illegal to feed, touch, or approach a Corolla Wild Horse. People must remain at least 50 from them. Enjoy the horses with binoculars. Or take an educational tour with the Corolla Wild Horse Fund.

@David Best If you’re aware of the plight of our wild horses and the rules regarding interacting with them, why post a comment that implies you went against those rules without also stating that your interaction was with a horse that had been previously removed from the herd? Oh , right, because it’s not cool enough to say you fed an apple to a domesticated Corolla Wild Horse. 🤦🏻‍♀️ Social media and people like you will be the downfall of those horses, and so many other unique experiences like this, because everyone believes they are the exception to those rules and have to brag about it on social media with photos or unnecessary comments like yours.

I would invite you, if you don't mind, to watch Mustang Meg or Chasing Horses and others. The above are in different parts of the country. Salt River horses hold their breath to get get the eel grass in the river, the only ones who do this in the world. Since you enjoyed it so much these may interest you also. Blessed be. 🙂😎
