To become skilled in nature photography you need to explore your options fully, experiment with different angles and take your time when choosing compositions. Quality over quantity wins every time with me and I would rather go home with nothing, than have to spend hours in front of the monitor deleting file after file.
In this film I head to the Peak District National Park where I give you my timeline for the day so you can judge the frquency to which I find and take my images.

Hi Simon. Love this ! Can't think of a better way to spend a day with the camera, especially when you come away with such fantastic images. Having just spent the morning photographing Fly Agarics in a local forest, watching this is a cracking end to the day. I'm always a little self conscious when photographing fungi as I often wonder what folks would think if they saw and old bloke like me flat on his belly in the woods ! That said, if I came away with images as good as yours I could handle the strange looks !! Really enjoyed the video Simon Many thanks for sharing.

Thanks Julian, very kind of you to say that. Whilst I’m not suggesting anything of you here , or the worth of this film particularly, your comment has led me to a question we should both ask ourselves. @@SimonBoothPhotography Well, that is a good question! I wish I knew the answer. Normally I would watch your film straight away, but a change in work commitments have pushed all my YT watching down the list. You likely won't see this as its one of your older video. I am yet another of your new subscribers, brought to you by way of Thomas Heaton. I really like that last autumn leaf shot. Both were very pleasing and if I could only pick one it would be the first one. Often times, Autumn shots feel depressing to me as they remind me that summer is gone and another birthday is approaching. That image brought forth a happier feeling, the sense of a beautiful and active Fall day. However, for me, I really thought the blend, even though it was just a transition in the video, was the best shot of the day.

It's good to mix it up a bit with your creative vision, keeps you open too more possibility's. Loved the abstract, and the gills on that Toadstool looked like something out of close encounters. What about merging the two leaf images together so they are both transparent, just a thought could make an interesting art piece. I believe your camera has a muti exposure setting, could be worth a try sometime, depends on image I suppose could get too messy maybe, but opens up some abstract possibility's. I’m not much into judging other people’s images. There’re so many KZbinrs who do videos criticising viewer images, and I don’t like it much, as I disagree most of the time. So this is not a critique, as I really don’t feel qualified for that. But you ask what we think, and won’t mind telling you what I think. I don’t know if I’d really describe myself as a traditionalist, but I think I prefer the more “traditional” version of the last image. Thanks for your inspirational films, they’re always a joy to watch. By the way, are you familiar with the “Stefan Traumflieger” KZbin channel? The man’s name is Stefan Gross, and he runs a shop in Hamburg, Germany. He and his friend Olaf Craasmann are macro nerds, and they’ve made many videos on the subject. It’s all in German, so if you aren’t comfortable with that language, it might not be of much value to you. They have, however, published a book called “Pilze als Kunstwerk” (Mushrooms as art), and I think it’s worth getting just for the photographs in it. Among many other subjects they’ve made pictures of large groups of Amanita Muscaria. They often use lots of artificial lighting - back lighting and light from below in particular, often making the subject seem to produce its own light from within. Often they even dig a hole for the camera to get shots from below. They use several different camera systems, but they seem to prefer Micro Four Thirds most of the time, although the new Canon R6 has quickly become a favourite.

Hello Lau Thanks for your comment. I presented more than one version knowing full well the jury would be out on which is best. It's purely down to personal taste and I'm OK with whichever you enjoy the most. I hadn't heard of the photographer you mentioned but I have looked at some of his work since mentioned him. Whilst his images were compelling, my German is none existent.

Another thoroughly enjoyable video! As other people mentioned below, I will be giving more attention to mushrooms and toadstools in future! It's actually quite a regular activity at this time of the year to go out looking for them, as in the woods behind my parents-in-law's house, there are plentiful Tricholoma equestre (I struggle to see why it is called a 'man on horseback' or 'yellow knight'?!) which is a delicacy where I live in Portugal (despite the apparent dangers). Not the most attractive mushroom to photograph, though! Also lots of Macrolepiota procera, which I think might give me a better photo (and also delicious)! Not to mention plenty of other toadstools. Once again you have left me enthused! Thank you!

Parasols really are lovely and they can grow pretty big too. We have two common types here, the common and the shaggy and I have photo's of both. There are quite a lot of types not worth photographing though.

It really is great to see how you search for and set up your images and how you can see something in front of you and visualise it in often extraordinary ways. Despite my best efforts, I'm still at a stage where I see something interesting and take lots of photos and choose the ones I like best afterwards! I liked the idea of looking through the leaves to make two versions. I wasn't sure which I preferred, then as in the video the defocused one faded to the sharp focused one, I wondered if you could merge them together with the twigs / branches sharp and all the leaves blurry... It could be an optical illusion due to the video fade, but it just caught my eye :)

Well spotted Jeff. Give yourself more credit. My personal favourite of the two at the end is also the mid merge. I’d planned to make an image from that and that’s something I’ve never done before. You clearly have a better eye for detail than you think 👍

Interesting to see the time lines Simon. Often as video makers/vloggers, we feel obliged to deliver a minimum number of images but I find this can often push me into getting images that that are sub standard. For the sake of a film however, it shows a true landscape photography session as not all images are portfolio worthy. A lovely bit of woodland that. The backlit mushroom gills shot was very striking and indeed a portfolio shot one would think. Nice work Simon👍

Hi James, this is part of the reason that I wanted to show it. The good, bad and the ugly with me being the latter! I think it's fair to say that the gills of the fungi were head and shoulders above the other shots with all the others (as far as I'm concerned) being the usual stock shots or work in progress. But I suppose how they are each received depends on the individual viewing them and where they are on their own journey of photographic experience.

Really enjoyed this, the variety of images you got just from the one stand of mushrooms was great , really showed why it’s so worthwhile to slow down and spend time with a subject instead of rushing off to find the next shot. I can’t decide between the two shots at the end of the vlog, I enjoyed the graphic nature of the focused shot of the leaves and the patterns of their structure that it revealed while still enjoying the abstracted version too, it reminded me of reflections on water with a sense of movement to the image. 👌👍

An interesting observation you make Damon. I too see the leaves as though they are immersed in water. I think the composition was not quite on point, but it's a concept worth trying again.

Love the underside of the mushroom shot. The high key image of the trees works superbly as well. The last one is a absolute belter for me. Comparing the "straight" image and the alternative focus is interesting and for me the non-standard image wins by the proverbial country mile. I take a lot of experimental images with multi exposure and ICM plus non-standard exposure settings to get an alternative view of the world and your approach in this video appeals to that side of me. You had a worthwhile day and I'm guessing one you enjoyed which is something we should remember is what its all about in the final analysis. Great stuff as always Simon.

Hi Martin and thanks for your comment. I think as we grow as photographers we tend to look for new unconventional angles and it's always a treat when it goes in the right direction. I'm not complaining but filming the whole event does come with some stress and can take the edge off the day, but that's my choice. I was actually quite stressed out prior to finding those leaves at the end because so much hinges on the ending of the film. I try to take separate days for me whenever I can.

Thanks Simon; as always thought provoking when watching a craftsman at work. There's an interesting comparison you present with meticulous preparation as to which mushroom to photograph whereas most photographers, I imagine, would photograph many subjects then select after post which is their preference. Love your style. Mike in Oz

What a brilliant inspirational and educational video Simon loved the first image of the 2 mushrooms including small spider. The light through the gills is amazing I would never haver thought of going that low. The final images through the leaves are difficult to separate but the more abstract edges it for me as something different. By the way it was great talking to you on the day, not every day you meet a celebrity in the woods :-) Good luck with the camper van conversion
