A Day of Reactive Woodland Photography

Having a day of reactive woodland photography can often be very rewarding, regardless of what the light or weather is doing. I'm not suggesting here that flat light is the ultimate light to have in our woodland photographs, but it is something to embrace when you have it, as opposed to sitting at home and complaining about it. It's about adapting and being open minded about what opportunities the flat light might provide us with. In this film I am back in the Cairngorm National Park shooting woodland scenery and in the absence of fog, mist or snow, I find a number of compositions where the flat light really has worked for me.

I bought myself a WNDRD PRVKE 31l a few weeks ago. It's nice because you can split it with two different size of camera containers depending on how much camera gear you need to carry or if you need to carry lots of clothes or food. Used it on a photography trip to Gotland. It was stormy with 24m/s winds. And it held up well :) Look into it!

Hi Fabian, I doubt I'd have enough space with 31ltrs but thanks for alerting me to them. It's a brand I hadn't come across before.

@@SimonBoothPhotography ye I was thinking the same. Then ultimately decided that it seemed like it fit a surprising amount of stuff and it being weather proof and being modular in so many ways was to good to pass on . Probably need a bigger bag though if I'd go for a longer trip and need to bring more clothes and all my gear. You're welcome, hope you find the right bag!

Hi Simon. What a fabulous video ! I wish my scouting trips turned out like this ! Your images are outstanding and that bonus birch composition at the end must have made for an almost perfect day. In terms of camera bags, I'm also a LowPro devotee, mainly because they're bomb-proof. I currently have three (I know, but I can explain.....). I use a Pro Rover 35l when I need to travel light; a Pro Trekker 400 for my woodland photography; and a Whistler BP450 for when I need to carry lots of lenses. None of them are ideal for every trip but they're all good in their own way. I'm considering investing in the Shimoda Action X50 as it will carry lots of kit besides my camera gear. It's a big investment but all the reviews I've seen say it's close to being the perfect all-round bag. Good luck with your own search and please let me know if you ever find the perfect bag !!

I've been a long time Lowpro devotee too. Like you, I have another three besides the on on this film and a forth with a dodgy zip. Ridiculous really! You have certainly drawn me to the Shimoda X50. I was looking at the Explore 60 but not so much now! The f-stopper Tilopa looks interesting too!

Well,I've discovered my favourite woodland photographer bar none. The images are soaked in the kind of painterly beauty I absolutely love. A Fuji GW690 MkI landed from Japan two days ago in gorgeous condition. Your vid is exactly the inspiration to liberate some Ektar from the freezer and enjoy some 6x9cm loveliness. Happy, happy days.

That’s a very generous comment Steve considering how many great woodland photographers there are. Cheers for that. Now that Fuji!!! Wow what a brave man you are; but stick with it, it was a camera that I drooled over many years ago. If you master the limitations of it, the image quality will blow your mind.
@stevenbudd3725
@stevenbudd3725 3 жыл бұрын
@@SimonBoothPhotography Thanks for that Simon. You're right to mention the limitations of the 'Texas Leica' - the fixed lens would be seen by some folks as a deal breaker for sure but I'm comfortable with 'one camera, one lens' when it suits. I have the Sigma DP2 Merrill and DP3 Merrill that are also fixed lenses, so using the GW690 will be the same - but bigger! All three are quirky and idiosyncratic but that's all part of the appeal. Have you ever used a Foveon sensor camera? The two Merrills are 'base ISO' (100) only but image quality is off the chart. I recall zooming in on a b & w image from the DP3m...and zooming...and zooming...long past the point a Bayer sensor would be screaming for mercy. Remarkable. Popular opinion consigns them to the 'don't bother bin' and I understand why that view exists but the pleasure of working in co-operation with the cameras and seeing their images is unique, so much so, I traded a Canon lens for the Sigma SD Quattro H and three DG Art lenses. Acceptance is the root of happiness...

I’ve just bought the Atlas Athlete. Hugely versatile, expandable and customisable and the customer service has been second to none. From ordering to my doorstep took a week from the states. You’re given a choice of belts and the reviews indicate that comfort factor for long term use is a prime selling point. The belt I wanted wasn’t in stock when I ordered so they’ve customised a larger size to put W on for now and are sending another belt of the right size free of charge in spring when they’re in stock. Check out Dave Griffs love letter to his on his website.

One of the larger F-Stop packs, or something similar (Atlas, Shimoda, eg) would be my suggestion. Far lighter than Lowe's packs, with a proper internal frame and much better load distribution, much closer to a technical backpack than anything Lowe has to offer. Good luck.

As always a really enjoyable watch! I don't say this lightly but I do find your images very inspiring. I've got some time off in December so I think it might be time to get myself into the woods. In terms of bags.....like you I carry to camera systems and need space for clothes and food as well. My bag of choice is the F-Stop Tilopa. I've had my bag for over 5 years and it's still going strong. Even with the heaviest of loads it's incredibly comfortable. As you can change the internal balance between camera gear and other stuff (by changing out the ICUs) it's versatile. The Tilopa has been out for over 5 years now, and is probably due a refresh. If I was going to get another bag I would definitely look at another F-stop, but I would also look at one of the Shimodo's as well (which are a similar type of bag).

Hi Julian, sorry I don't usually read the comments or reply until a new film is due out. I only looked today because I am looking for the right bag so was checking what had been proposed in the comments. I'm torn between the Tylopa and the Shimoda Action X50. I thnk I've ruled out all the others. Thanks for your really kind words too. Coming from a fellow KZbinr with a brilliant channel, that really means an awful lot. I feel our channels should be much bigger but it is what it is and only time and hard work is going to make a difference now it seems. Starting KZbin two years earlier would have made a massive difference I feel...but I am grateful for everything that it is to date.

Hi Simon. I was going to mention Shimoda bags, but some one has already pointed you in their direction; they have roll-top bags which I imagine would be good for carrying spare clothing/waterproofs. Have you considered a Beach Rolly? Go to the speedgraphic website to have a look. I’m considering one because I can no longer carry the weight I once could and, like you, I shoot macro/closeup as well as landscapes. It works as a platform to work from, keeping your gear off the ground, take the gear off and you have a chair. Good luck.

Great little video. I really enjoyed all the locations and images. As for backpacks, I feel your pain. I had used only LowePro bags for many years, but as I got more equipment, it grew harder. I have neck problems, so I can't handle much weight on my shoulders. I ended up buying a lot of different ICUs of various sizes. Theses camera bag incerts zip fully closed and can be mixed and matched depending on the kit I want to use on a particular day. I then put them inside a proper hiking bag with a good hip belt to carry the load there rather than on the shoulders. It also then allows me to have room for food, water, and clothes so I'm prepared for whatever the day brings. If you don't want to go that route, you can try looking at Fstop and Shimoda. Their camera bags are built a little more like hiking bags and use the insert idea. There's another company that also goes with the more technical type of bag but without inserts, Atlas I think is the name, but I believe their bags are meant for mirrorless, so they may not work for the larger medium format. Good luck! :) Paula from Maine, USA

I recently switched from a MindShift to an F-Stop Tilopa backpack. It has room for photo gear and personal gear such as clothes and food. The bag works with ICU's (Internal Camera Units) and that is a great system. This way it is possible to get the right ICU size for your needs. Have been using the bag for several weeks now and I absolutely love it. The MindShift was good but lacks the space for personal stuff. This is where the F-Stop shines: its great for both.

Not a bad set of images for a scouting day Simon. Looks like there are lots more to be had in that woodland too. On bags, I now have an F-stop rear entry bag with removable insert. You can have different inserts for more/less gear and as configured I can get a butty box and a flask in there. They do bigger versions too. The quality is excellent and there are lots of little features that only become apparent as 'good ideas' as you use the bag. With your kit, would a trolley not be better? Stay safe and stay healthy! Thanks for sharing.

Lovely images, as always, Simon. I thought and researched long and hard before purchasing a replacement for my old Lowepro that could carry all my camera and hiking gear, plus food, water and the all-important flask of coffee. Eventually, I settled on the Shimoda Action X50. It is far from light but is flexible, very comfortable and will accommodate my full-frame camera with lens attached plus three additional lenses and filter system in the camera compartment. I'm in Walton-le-Dale so let me know if you want a look. At the end the day, though, unless you're Morten Hilmer or you invent an anti-gravity device, there's no getting away from the fact that your system will always be a heavy load.

Great channel Simon. Like you I’ve been searching for a new bag, in my case for over a year, and had hoped to visit the Photo Show to assist in this. I recently did a KZbin vid on the Mindshift Backlight 26L & 36L bags, that some have mentioned, and both are great bags; the 36L might be an ideal fit your equipment needs, but it’s a big bag. Neither though fitted my personal needs and so I got the Shimoda X50 that others are also citing, and I’m in the process of putting together a vid on this one. Whilst the Shimoda is also a great bag, it does have some issues. Some photo retailers in the UK are now stocking these bags and it ‘s always worth seeing them in the flesh, and one or two have “no quibble” returns policies, so you can have a look in the socially distanced comfort of your own home. I also considered the Atlas bags that have been mentioned, and actually prefer the feature set that these bags offer over the other bags I’ve used, but the Athlete was too shallow in the camera storage area, at 5”, for my needs and the Adventure bag that they also offer was too large overall for my needs. And as these bags are sold direct from the States, it was too much of a risk to take a punt on. It’s worth noting that the Adventure bag is is being updated for 2021, so it might be worth a look later on. As always, the search for the ideal, let alone the perfect camera bag, can be elusive. Happy hunting and keep up the good work. 👍

My goodness, that was a long comment. Sorry I haven't replied sooner, but I did read it when it came in. I think I've decided on the X50, but they are not as light as they claim to be. Excellent morning watch with a cuppa & some toast Simon. Locve that tree, I wondered did you just come across it or had you researched it priot to your visit to the Cairngorms? 3 Excellent images . The 1st image came me a feeling of spatial awareness within the scene, each lovely textured bark tree seemed to know it's own place and I found the smaller trees in the right part opened up the scene & added real depth. The 2nd image was a cracker, the golden purple moor grass and the old birch complimented each other so well. I was up in Skye a few years ago and came across a boggy section of grasses with a multitude of fabulous colours including a purplish tinge to some - I now wonder if this might have been some rush pasture ? Shimoda are excellent, light and have some space above for other gear, especially the new Action X30 with an expandable roll top. Lots of additional storage, pockets and tripod pouch etc. Mindshift are also good but a bit shallow so lenses end up lengthways and there isn't much room for other gear. Both are pricey. Another great video, really enjoyable. With your talking about camera bags and weight I just wanted to ask if you feel that the weight associated with medium format is worth it. I ask because when you look at the quality of high resolution mirrorless cameras these days the image quality is amazing. Having followed your channel for quite a long time I don't see any great difference from the images you were capturing with your 1DX, they were amazing. Also, have you considered mirrorless medium format? It would be great to hear your thoughts :)
@SimonBoothPhotography
@SimonBoothPhotography 3 жыл бұрын
Hi Mark All I can say is since using the MF system, I’m afraid there’s probably no going back. I love how it slows me down and makes me more considered in how I see and take images. The smaller cameras never make me feel this way and I think photography is as much a feeling as is anything else. Quality image wise, it's the best I have ever used to date. I did study a lot of sample files from other cameras prior to moving over and granted, many were contenders. However, the images from the Z have a very analogue feel to them, not digital at all, especially with the older lenses attached, which I love. When you sharpen the images in readiness for print, they are like drum scanned transparencies which have a huge amount of unmatched colour depth and detail and just burst into life. When printed big, they are really impressive in my opinion...but this is never going to be detectable on KZbin, or any other social media platform for that matter. For me, I often sell really large prints and the 1Dx was just not up to the job and let me down on a number of occasions. I actually gave the prints away on two occasions to customers. If you see a 1.5m print from full frame up against a 1.5m print from a medium format, Id be surprised if you didn't think they were poles apart. I maintain that squeezing (as an example), 50 million pixels on a 36 x 24mm sensor is never going to rival that same number of pixels on a sensor where there is room to breathe. This is where it matters in large format prints. Not everyone needs to print big as I do so smaller more portable cameras are perfectly adequate and this is the reason why I never go on about how great the camera publicly. The focal range limitations and weight are tolerable I feel given what I have mentioned. As for the second question about mirrorless MF, I really prefer the analogue look of the Z files and hope that this is maintained in any new models they produce...if they produce. I've yet to be convinced by a DVF and still enjoy looking through the lens.

Shimoda backpacks might be of interest for you (shimodadesignseu.com/gb/action-x50). Very recently I did a lot of research regarding backpacks and the Shimoda ActionX line of bags appealed most to me in terms of features and useability for landscape photography. They have various models, mainly distinguished by size/volume. Depending on size the weight ranges from 2.3 to 1.7 kg for the 70, 50 and 30 Ltr model, respectively. According to reviews you can pack more than the nominal volume (e.g. about 60 Ltr instead of the nominal 50 Ltr, see Nick Page's review). Will hopefully receive my Shimoda X50 in two days, so haven't actually used a Shimoda bag yet. FYI the ActionX bags are newer models, replacing the older Shimoda Explorer bags. But the Explorer might still be available in some places (perhaps even at reduced price). I went for the ActionX because it seems to give better options to balance the weight of a tripod for hiking. That said, your landscape images are superb! Your channel is one of the very best on KZbin.
