Enjoyed seeing this section of your ranch. Sounds like an interesting encounter you had with your neighbor. Looking forward to seeing you start the upper pond. Have a great weekend 🤝🏻

So much beauty out there, I love the way you do slow and steady panoramas and not going to fast from one subject to another. Once again thanks for bringing us along.

Thanks for the compliment and following along with the project as always. I'm glad you enjoyed the walk up the main creek. I need to take a walk the other direction on the creek to see how much has changed since the pond has been there.

Looking forward to it, I love the boulder outcropping, always wanted to have property with rock formations. The cave might be an interesting place to put a trail cam.

@@RZ-eu2rl It's probably would be a good place for one. I need to invest in a few more cameras.

"Location Challenged" made me laugh. The flourishing flora and fauna suggests that you must be doing something right. Dinosaurs once walked there. How cool is that. Thanks for the tour.

It was just the most PC way that came to mind to say it when I was talking about the neighbor. The geological history is very interesting in the area. The land has been underwater, volcanic, savannah, and now desert. Hopefully, with time, I will turn it back to a more hospitable land. Thanks for following along with the project as always.

I think the upper pond will have some vibrant plant life around it with the amount of soil present up there. Keep up the great work and thanks for sharing with us.

Thanks for the compliment and following along with the project as always. Yes, the upper pond is going to add a good bit of available moist soil to plant on. I'm looking forward to seeing it done.

Great idea to prune your honey mesquite to a central leader. Bushes are good but trees that provide shade are better. Creosote is another good candidate I believe. I'll suggest making those pruning cuts on every species that will grow into an upright form whenever you are able. Carrying a pair of pruning shears on your belt can be very useful when you go on these walks. It only takes a minute to do this type of pruning, so coming back to it later is a waste of precious time. Your transplanted yuccas look great. I'm sure being in the waterway helped. I'll suggest collecting dwarf oak acorns to distribute on the lake berm and between rocks in the waterway. A highly desirable tree to support game birds. Another candidate for a central leader. What a wonderful discovery. With 3 leaky weirs, you should greatly reduce the amount of sediment that makes its way into the lake. if you can, build the weirs to a height where high water flows out of the channel and onto the surrounding land. And you will have three bonus green zones adjacent to the main house. REALLY appreciate the tour of the watershed. That is a lot of area. I hope someday you are on site when a monsoon storm hits so you can capture video of the volume of water that comes roaring down that arroyo. The site of the second lake is perfectly situated to feed your green oasis. I hope you can build a pocket pond sooner than later so you can cap the powdery clay on the road. The more water you can capture at that elevation the better. thank you Simon.

Thanks for following along with the project as always. Really, the only tree Species, that's found on the ranch is mesquite and juniper down in the creeks, but not very many of them. I have some ideas for creating shade at the ranch. I think you will approve of.

6:56 These I would say are claws 😅 Convergent evolution - T-rex claws, lion claws, plant claws... They all look similar and have similar functions. The dwarf oak is a nice surprise. The oaks are small but certainly very old. With several leaky weirs and planned upper pond, that creek I can see will change into a forest. Great walk around.
@TimelineRanch2 ай бұрын
You never know what surprise the ranch will have for you. The upper pond will definitely have a positive impact on the creek. I am hoping that with time, maybe even a little spring will pop up down by the lower pond. Thanks for following along with the project as always.

Nice job! Will the second pond be a below grade catchment pond like your first one; or, are you going to buile a dam?
@TimelineRanch2 ай бұрын
I have been thinking about it some, and I believe it's going to be a hybrid parsley in the ground along with a very sturdy rock dam kind of like a giant leaky wear. Thanks for following along, and it's a good question.

you dont harvest any of the deer or quail? They are so good. Your pond is big enough to hold ducks i would think too. Game wardens told me I have had ducks on my little water hole and its only a few inches deep and only last a couple of months.
@TimelineRanch2 ай бұрын
I haven't harvested any animals yet from the ranch, but they're not going anywhere. It's nice to know I have a food source that I don't have to manage very much. I have had ducks stop in here and there to the pond for a break on their migratory paths. The most common variety is blue teal that i've seen. Thanks for following along as always.

Nice ponds you are planning to build. In that place where you said "natural catchment", you could do a sand dam.

I have been thinking for a while about the creek that feeds the pond. I think I will not alter it more than I have already. I thought it would be interesting to see how it will change just with the upper pond in place. Thanks for following along as always.

Absolutely the best way to start the weekend today, thanks. Your property is even more beautiful on a walkaround. I can’t wait till you take in visitors on overnights, though I’d be more interested in helping you work it than in just looking. Is there a go-to agent in your neck of the woods when I’m looking to buy my own? Kids are leaving soon. Thanks

Thanks for following along. I'm glad to share the beauty of the ranch. I'm looking forward to getting to meet anyone interested in visiting the ranch later when that is possible. The guy I bought from was very wishy-washy, you call, and of course, he wouldn't answer leave a message. It'd be weeks he'd finally get back. I would just make sure before purchasing anything to do a site visit and make sure to go through a title company. Good luck on finding the right property that fits your needs.

You are very knowledgeable about local plant life. I reckon you know that creosote plants have some mechanism that kills off all plant life around them, and spreads root runners around it's vicinity. Over the years it over populates an area.
@TimelineRanch2 ай бұрын
Thanks for the compliment and watching, of course. Well, that topic is still up for debatet. There have been some studies that show creosote and tar bushes tend to not be found together. But no definitive answer to why that is. In other words, no chemical has been isolated from the creaso that would inhibit tar bushes from growing close. The main factor that seems to cause other plants to have a hard time to live around creosote is the creosotes ability to absorb water very rapidly from the soil, making it hard for other plants to germinate near them.
@jimdotcom19722 ай бұрын
have you worked out how much volume of water runs through your creek/property over the year and how many ponds you'll need to catch it all, or is it just way too much to think about? i hope you'll be able to show us your creek during a storm and in full flow, be interesting to see how much water you get. those natural sediment catchments might also be good spots for more leaky weirs or rock check dams, they'd fill up with sediment and act as sand dams and store water for longer, you never know your creek might develop a continuous trickle at some points of the year.
@TimelineRanch2 ай бұрын
Good question, and thanks for following along as always. I have done some rough math it's around 74.6 million gallons over the entire watershed that feeds the lower pond. This was based on a good rain year at 12 inches. The average is 10 inches. That being said, basically, I can build as much water catchment as I want and still won't have enough to catch the entire potential. I hope a couple of little springs show up later. That would be awesome.

If it was me, I'd definitely think about slowing the water down the steep creek bed in the upper reaches maybe even make a holding pond if possible.
@TimelineRanch2 ай бұрын
The upper pond will do just that when I get the time to build it. I will make a massive leaky weir on the outflow of the upper pond that will regulate the water flow downstream. It will be a thing of beauty when complete. Thanks for watching the project.

Luckily, in Texas, you have the right to do what you want with water that crosses your property. Out in the middle of nowhere in the Chihuahuan desert, there are plenty of opportunities to make big changes that will have a positive impact on the environment. I'm glad I get to be that person. Thanks for following along with the project.
