Yucca Care Instructions.
Light
The Yucca plant is one garden and houseplant which will be quite happy with as much sun as you can give it. Indoors a South facing window would be the first choice. Whatever your light situation try to provide as much as possible. Less bright conditions will slow growth considerably (which may be an advantage) however very shady and dark spots must be avoided to maintain a healthy looking plant.
Soil
Yucca plants need soil with excellent drainage. A mix of equal parts potting soil, coarse sand, and perlite will provide enough drainage for yucca plants. Cacti and palm soil blends can be purchased and work great for growing yuccas.
Watering
Water your Yucca liberally during warmer months of the year. Like all plants it's impossible to give rigid watering intervals, but if conditions are exceptional (bright, warm etc) you could be looking to do this as frequently as once a week or more. The soil should dry out a little between watering's. In Winter a lot less water is required.
Humidity
Moderate humidity will be helpful, however misting of the leaves isn't needed.
Feeding
A feed once a month or so would be appreciated during the growing seasons.
Temperature
Your Yucca will tolerate a wide range of temperatures, but average home temperatures are best. Cooler in Winter if possible, but not lower than 7°C / 45°F.
Repotting
It's not essential, but a good rule of thumb is to repot every two years in Spring. The plants tend to become top heavy as most of the weight is centered at the top of the Yucca, planting in a deep heavy container will help prevent the plant from tipping over.
There is a more complicated method of taking Yucca root cane cuttings, however as we haven't done this ourselves we can't with good faith recommend it. The easer method is to remove the offsets that are produced from the trunk and pot them up.
Propagation
Chances of the offsets growing will increase if you use a rooting hormone. Water well when first potting up, and then only again when the top inch of the soil has dried out, constantly moist conditions will encourage rot. The offsets should not be fed and should be kept out of direct sunlight until established.
Speed of Growth
Yucca's grow slowly.
Height / Spread
Generally it is a narrow plant only spreading to around 50cm / 20in, however it can reach staggering heights of up to 4.5m / 15ft after many years.

Propergated 7 Yucca plants today from the instructions on this video. I pray that they grow and don't just rot. EDIT: After 3 weeks they are still alive and green. Although I haven't checked the roots as I don't want to disturb any growth, they look like they are doing fine.

Yukkas are the easiest plants to propagate 100% successfully in a warm climate. I dip the cuttings in hormone rooting powder just to make sure. They grow to the size of a tree outside eventually and are quite impressive.

@peter seddon and, @Melanie Cape Town ... I am inferring that you Melanie, live in Southern Africa? To you both: Respectfully, may I ask (just approximately) where each of you live? What are your winter seasons like, such that you're able to grow yuccas outside, year-long, and to "tree-like" proportions? :) Lastly, my curiosity is asking what dimensions you've obtained with your outdoor yuccas? That is to ask: 1. How thick can the diameter of the trunks get? And, 2. How tall have they gotten? ...just approximately, of course. Thank you so very kindly, congratulations, and enjoy! It's all quite exciting! Sincerely, ~ Justin 😁🪴🌴

I have some big yucca's and wanted to transplant them.And watchinging this vid i remembered that you could buy years ago Yucca stems,2-3 inches long,waxed both ends and plant then and hey ho a Yucca plant would grow! Wicked!They are nearly indestructible! Mine have inch stems so gonna give it a go!! Cool vid Thanks!!!!
@MMAFightMagazine
@MMAFightMagazine 3 жыл бұрын
May I ask what you mean? "Both ends are waxed?" Are you saying that you cut the trunk in half... This gives you two halves, of course. 1. Half of a trunk, with roots, but no leaves, and you wax the top (where the leaves WERE). You plant this, and new growth appears? Where? 2. The other half of the trunk has leaves, but no roots. You wax the bottom of this piece, where the roots WERE. Then plant the waxed bottom, and new growth occurs? Where is the growth? Do roots grow through the wax?
@djyul
@djyul 3 жыл бұрын
@@MMAFightMagazine 5.00 your question is answered. Wax is to stop plant from losing its moisture. Also for stalks with both ends waxed, put 1 waxed end in soil,water and it will root and as in 5.00 new growth will sprout out of the side.

@@djyul OH okay, thank you. I have a half dozen, and can't seem to get any new growth, so I've been hesitant about cutting off the last off-shoot from a given plant. But... I guess the plant won't produce new shoots unless all others have been removed, is that correct? Again, thank you! :)

I've taken them off successfully for propagation, but they don't seem to want to grow much! I know. Patience. :) Thank you for the input and advice, sir. Wow! Congratulations!!! To be clear... You found just a single leaf that had no stem? That single leaf produced roots when put into water, and -when eventually planted into soil- became a "full" plant with a stem etc? That's amazing! Has anyone else had similar successes? I'm not implying that I doubt anything, by any means! 😊 I only ask because I've made MANY attempts at propagation by removing leaves and placing them into various water sources, and I personally (and frustratingly) have never seen any indication of root formation. Following various durations (up to six months) of time in the water, I plant them into soil. After similar lengths of time in the soil, the leaves become hard, and the edges of the leaf curl inwards upon itself - similar to what a cinnamon stick looks like. Upon removal, I have never seen even a hint of root growth. I can't help but infer that I MUST be doing something wrong - if others are indeed succeeding. Thank you kindly for any -and all- advice and thoughts! Very sincerely, Justin.

@@MMAFightMagazine I never did this before but all I did was place each leave in a seperate tupperware cup (the long and narrow ones so it keepts the leaves up right) with some tapwater and put them on the bathroom windowsill for 6 months. I totally forgot about them. From the 4 leaves one rooted and grew out to a new big plant. I guess it's just luck.

I moved into a place 2 years ago where one was established outside. It was so dead and ugly!! I just wanted it gone! Did some research and realize the flowers are edible! It still has produced one stem of flowers. I cleared away all the dead stuff on most of the plant...still some sponginess on some of the exposed roots that, some are a foot long. Is there any way that these can be salvaged and get new growth?? Now I’m very intrigued with this plant. And definitely gave it room to breathe, finally, after removing all the dead yucky stuff.
