Can I just say, it is unfathomably badass that we know so much about dinosaurs. Not only do we know this thing existed, we have an idea of its speed, it's metabolism, how much it ate, how it hunted, it's ancestry, among so many other things. These aren't animals we can go an observe in the wild. This thing lived tens of MILLIONS of years ago and yet we can still infer so much about it. It seemed to me that, at one point during the film’s creation, they wanted to have the giganotosaurus in modern day be a hybrid of some kind, but that got lost in development at some point. Probably around the time the prologue was in development, they’d spent too much on the hybrid model and so they decided to use that instead of making a more accurate giganotosaurus model. They probably figured people didn’t really care if it was accurate, they’d spent too much, the toys were already in production and ready to be sold.

A silver-lining of the JW Giga is it probably acts the most realistic out of all the antagonist dinosaurs we have seen to date. It mostly just acts territorial to threats in its environment rather than being an over the top psychopath like Indominous or a straight up serial killer like the Indoraptor.
@VivianaSilverback2 жыл бұрын
Apart from the fact it just kills a t rex for no reason in the prologue. Real life carnivores don't immediately go for the kill if they see a rival in their territory. They will try to scare the trespasser off first, and then attack if the tresspasser doesn't go away. But animals rarely kill eachother for territory, especially solitary animals.

@Sounder19952 жыл бұрын
My personal head canon is that the Prologue is not meant to be taken as literal truth. My reasoning for this is a strange inversion of the oft quoted Dr. Wu quote from JW about how nothing in JW is natural. Ramsey explicitly states that BioSyn at least can extract 100% of an extinct animal's genome, heavily implying that their creatures at least can be more accurate than InGen's / Masrani's. However, the Pteranodon and Ankylosaurus in the Prologue look exactly the same as InGen's / Masrani's. This gives leeway, I'd say, to argue that the Prologue is not meant to be an actual literal flashback to what the Cretaceous was like in the JP universe. Of course, the behind the scenes reasoning is way simpler. Since this scene is short and was cut from the final theatrical cut of Dominion anyway, I'm not surprised that they didn't create more accurate versions just for this scene.

I was around way back during Jurassic Park's release, and it's really hard to relay just how monumental the discovery of Giganotosaurus was then. Tyrannosaurus had been holding the crown for "history's biggest predator" for nearly a century, then at the peak of the whole JP/Dinosaur Renaissance era it was dethroned! I was lucky enough to live near a museum that had both Giga and Rex on display, so Dominion was like a wish come true. Granted, Giga's time in the limelight turned out to be rather short -- suddenly there was a whole host of contenders for the throne, including the ever-changing tyranno-slaying Spinosaurus -- so I appreciate this video acting as an update on a dino I've kinda forgotten about.

I love your statement at the end of the video, you're not critiquing the design of the movie in a bad or insulting way but to teach people, I personally never see the big issue with inaccurate designs for dinosaurs (in fictional movies or series of course), as you said, they are a good way for people to get interested in learning more about these animals. What I hate is, why bother calling it a Giganotosaurus if it lacks the very features that make a Giga a Giga? Like, if I made a movie about bloodthirsty African lions, I wouldn't give them 9" long saberteeth, remove the manes, and colour their fur black and green. That wouldn't be an African lion anymore. If you change something enough, it'll no longer be what you're calling it.

You know, I'm really conflicted on the Dominion Giga Design. As a design for some fictional hybrid, it's pretty cool. But as a design for a Giganotosaurus, it is just terrible.
@catpoke95572 жыл бұрын
The dinos in JW are canonically all hybrids of some kind due to them being unable to obtain full DNA of the dinosaurs. So it really is more of a hybrid than a giganotosaur, which explains why it looks so weird.
@kade-qt1zu2 жыл бұрын
@@catpoke9557 As stated in the video though, the giga in the prologue and the cloned giga are identical, implying that this is what the real life giga looked like in the JP universe. So even that doesn't work here.

I’ve never had any problems with the dinosaur designs in the franchise but the Gigi’s design kinda bothered me a bit because it looks nothing like one, it looks like a Mapusaurus-Concavenator hybrid. I get that the dinosaurs in this franchise are clones of their palaeo-accurate counterparts but the fact that the Giga still looks like its ancestor in present day is kinda lazy from the film makers I mean couldn’t they have used the JWE design for the movie.

There are Harris' Hawks where I work in west Texas, and I've seen groups hunting together many times. It's usually just two birds, but I have seen three and even once five. The hunting tactic I've seen most often is one bird up high, several hundred feet, while a second bird skims just above the desert vegetation, maybe eight or ten feet above the ground. Rabbits are their usual prey.
@jacobsomebody92662 жыл бұрын
My headcanon is that the Giganotosaurus in the movie is *actually* a descendant of either Giganotosaurus or some other Carcharodontosaur, perhaps Concavenator. This explains some of the morphological differences, the time period, and its location. It's also not unprecedented, as the Velociraptors in Jurassic Park are basically confirmed to have actually been Deinonychus. 🤔

When you say a relatively weak bite its relative to a trex which is still blowing most crocodiles out of the water. Let alone earlier carnosaurs like allosaurus or any mammal. We also have heaps of evidence of carnosaurs damaging and injesting bone(incidently and on purpose) so when you say their teeth were able to cut through flesh I'd add that they could gough into bone to reach marrow, or cut through it to make a swallowable mouthful

"Family group" hunting is different from "pack hunting" and I wish content creators remembered that difference when talking about dromeosaurs. The Mapusaurus family mentioned here is a good example of 'probably a family group'. It's not a herd or a pack, it's a small group of related individuals who likely hunted together and supported one another.
