Dilophosaurus is the most iconic dinosaur of the early Jurassic. Thanks to appearance in Jurassic Park and it's reappearance in Jurassic World, Dilophosaurus has become a more popular and known species. However, what was shown in these moves is extremely inaccurate to what the animal was like in reality. But just how different is the real animal from what was shown in the movies? Funny thing about the JP dilo is that early concept art showed that they assumed it had keratin that made up the crest. So they were actually ahead of their time intially! Another fact is that the dilophosaurs was given the frill and small size so it stand out as the filmmakers thought normal audiences would confuse it with the raptors.

Im tired of this general audience excuse, yes people are dumb af but that’s why they need to be educated instead of playing around with their stupidity. Instead dumbing down the Dilophosaurus they should have explained the difference between it and a Velociraptor in the movie. I’m pretty sure even the dumbest person can tell that one dinosaur is bigger than the other if they used the Dilophosaurus’s actual size. Make the people learn something, if they don’t like it, go watch another movie.

The problem wasn’t really about the audience confusing the Dilo with the Velociraptors, it was about the animal lessening the latter’s impact later on had it been kept the same size it is in the novel. Since Wayne Knight’s Nedry was also portrayed as a bumbling goofball like with his other comedic roles it also makes sense why Spielberg chose to shrink the Dilo so the attack could have more implemented comedy aspects which would be less possible with a big carnivore. The movie’s Dilo attack is basically slapstick comedy with a creepy undertone.

And as I previously mentioned to another Diné viewer, from here on out I'll try my best to properly reference the tribes and their lands which the fossils were found 😃Also they taught me that most of the registered tribal names come from either Anglicized versions, or from the enemies of said tribes. Also it's venom they is a difference poison is done by absorption,drinked,eaten or breathen in that's not a word but I like it I am going to Oxford to see if the they make it back to subject venom is done by entering blood tracts via stingers,teeth or spitting out from you venom glands plus poison can't be spitted out because of a very big instincal thing by evolution that I forgot plus it would have been ahead of its time well maybe not

I think the reason the Jurassic Park Dilophosaurus was given the frill and venom was to show the risks of bringing back an extinct animal you don't know the soft tissue of and how it can backfire. So in a way, it could be the first time speculative soft tissue was in a dinosaur film, even if it was inaccurate.

That was exactly the point of the venom, even in the original book. They didn't expect them to have it so their enclosures didn't prepare for it, leading to all the warning signs telling you to close car windows.

I remember hearing about Dilophosaurus having a stronger bite force than scientists originally thought, and I love how your art explained the current research on that topic. Truly a beautiful, yet deadly addition to the early Jurassic Period. As for the "Jurassic Park" version, I would say the novel counterpart was even more frightening considering how much gorier Nedry's death was. Still doesn't take away how the smaller, neck-frilled Dilo terrified me as a kid.

The movie Dilo is a venom spitting dwarf. Whereas the novel Dilo is a venom spitting giant. Which one do you think invokes more dread? It now makes sense why Spielberg nerfed his interpretation of the animal, had they used it the novel one might have stolen the Velociraptor’s thunder.

@@mayhaps801 Not just that the Dilo was bigger than the raptors, the Dilophosaurus in the novel version was about 10 feet tall while the raptors both in the novel and the movie are about 5-6 feet tall, so also a massive size difference.

@@mayhaps801 But to be fair tho, the general public will misidentify a dinosaur that doesn't even look like the dinosaur they say it is. For example, some people called a mounted skeleton of a Plateosaurus, a Velociraptor or there were some people who called a Mosasaurus, a Megalodon. But we shouldn't make fun of their lack of knowledge and instead educate them about the differences, so they can learn.

I personally think that the way the JP dilophosaurus venom is spit towards his prey closely resembles the way some sea birds chicks regurgitate acidic viscous stomach content to defend themselves against their predators. So to me it would make more sense that the DNA use comes from these species of birds rather than cobra’s species that spits venom from their fangs. Also, love the video. Snake venom did start as just glorified saliva, and it was only over a lot of time that it began to find its way through hollow fangs. So it’s not that unreasonable to say that a more basal snake could have been used to cause the venomous spit. Making venom is a very different process than regurgitating stomach acid, and the JP dilos don’t seem to be using stomach acid, but distinctly venom as a weapon.

It can be as long as needs to make us understand what any animal looks like in reality compared to Hollywood version. You did more than 15 minutes with the other videos like Giganotosaurus, therizinosaurus and mososaurus. Those were great videos even if they were long. So you can keep doing what you always been doing in making these videos no matter how long the video needs to be.

You know, it’s interesting, but the Jurassic Park novel dilophosaurus was surprisingly accurate and modern in its depiction, being the correct size, and also having a strong bite force, which is displayed when it finished off Dennis Nedry by crushing his skull between its jaws.

Dilophosaurus has always been my favorite dino, ever since I first saw Jurassic Park as a kid. I was always disappointed that it was downsized like it was but I love it all the same. Fun fact : there is a Dilophosauridea Species (which is most likely non-existent) know as Eubrontes which were just Dilophosaurus foot prints found in Connecticut. (or maybe in other states)

To this day, I feel the movie version is a big disservice from the actual animal in life. Not even the frills or venom alone, but the sheer DOWNsize was insane to me as a kid. One fun thing I found out about the dilo’s genetic make up was through the Jurassic world ride queue line (since they had tv screens featuring a reporter speaking with Claire, Owen and dr wu) and one of the little snippets was dr wu explaining how the dilophosaurus had venom (which he said the real animal didn’t have) and he explained it was a genetic mutation from using poison dart frog dna #dilophosaurus

One thing worth noting is that alongside making it scarier, the reason the Dilophosaurus was given a frill was that Spielberg worried that audiences might mistake it for the Velociraptors, so he included the feature so moviegoers didn't confuse the two.

The only thing that JP's ones have of "Dilophosaurus" is the presence of two crests on the head and the basic theropod form, but not even their shape are similar.

I love the real Dilo and the movie Dilo, but you don't need to downsize it to make it interesting. Dilo is low key a favorite dinosaur of mine and it's great that it gets more spotlight through movies and games like Prehistoric Kingdom. Well, in Jurassic Franchise there should be large/adult Dilophosaurus, just 1 meter smaller than irl Dilophosaurus, but for some reason they show only juveniles and adolescents, because i guess adult Dilos in Jurassic Franchise doesnt spit venom so they thinks its too boring or something🤷‍♂️

It was never meant to be the real life accurate version. The dna was filled in with different frog dna so there were a lot of mutations/inaccuracies.

I don't think thrilled lizard or spitting cobra or comodo dragon DNA was used because in the movie they have a voice track presenting the dinosaurs in the car and it says "we now know that Dilophosaurus is actually poisonous, spitting its venom at its prey, causing blindness and eventually paralysis", that implies that they discovered it once it was cloned meaning, in that universe, that is accurate to their dilophosauruses.

One thing to note about the original JP Dilophosaurus: Nedry states that's it's not fully grown in the movie. Quote, "I thought you were one of your big brothers, you're not so bad." So there's a reason for it being small.

I do like how you do show a more colorful variant that I’m not really a fan of the nasal air sacs though I’m more of a fan of the scaly part. I do prefer Proto feathers as well and I really like how for the one that is feathered, and how much darker color scheme actually has a blue mouth and tongue, which I really like imagine T Rex having a Blue mouth with a blue tongue

I gotta say I love the sound,color, and the overall design of your dilo, not to mention one of my favorite dinosaur: Cryolophosaurus appears in the video and I adore it 😍. Furthermore I also love when you make comparing to certain dinosaur features to modern day animals. But most importantly my favorite section was what is it made of for the Jurassic Park Dilophosaurus, that section never gets old 😂. Lastly I just wish you have a good rest of your day.

Thanks for explanation so I wanna ask like if in jurassic world dominion about Dino conservation :why are there no poachers just black market dealer, can you make a video of if there are illegal animal poachers in jwd like make the clip of you know :poachers hunting trikes for their horns, dilos are being hunted for their crests and frill and paras are being hunted for their skin and their head for head mantle something like that!!

I always like dilophosaurus starting from jurassic park ( it was so cute and viscious) then I learned recently how huge they can be. I want to be back in my dinosaur phase again! I always like to learn about them. ❤ also cool a navajo member found them!

I have not had the fortune of reading the original book, so it may be a different case in the book, but in the film, Dennis Nedry actually mentions that the Dilophosaurus seen in the film was a younger specimen, saying "I thought you were one of your big brothers, you're not so bad." This must mean that the Dilophosaurus was a younger specimen, rather than a downsized version.

Ingen’s version of Dilophosaurus had Frilled-Lizard and Spitting Cobra DNA implanted into its genome which gave its iconic frill and the ability to spit tar-like venom that caused either blindness or paralysis.

I have a very personal hypothesis about DILOPHOSAURUS and "poisonous spit". I imagine that DILOPHOSAURUS was a puppy, for me like the chicks of the northern fulmar (Procellaria glacialis) which have a "defensive vomiting" I think that the puppy of the real DILOPHOSAURUS since it did not have "mature" crests, had a similar "umbrella" to the film as first warning then the "defensive vomit" (not poisonous, but with an odor that marked the aggressor) after the parent "fixed" the aggressor (I know this is a para-paleontological stretch, but it is at least a possibility perhaps accurate to 50%)
