Hi Andrew, welcome to the world of video. Especially with that huge video-centric firmware update the G9 became quite a beast for video. I have both GH5 (for video) and G9 (initially for photography, faster AF, burst, highres mode, etc.). Since that upgrade I have hardly touched my GH5 anymore. G9 is such a complete camera👍 Btw, there is nothing wrong to use standard 30fps as a target speed, instead of 60fps. So 180fps VFR will get slowed down by factor 6 (instead of factor 3), which is even more impressive. VFR works also in 4k mode. As a targetspeed you'd chose 4k/24fps. The VFR recording can be upped to 60fps in 4k, which will provide a 2,5x slowmotion factor in 4k. 🌈🍀🤘
@TurtleTimeTV3 жыл бұрын
Ya. Its actually better quality to use 30fps because both the 60fps and 30fps are 100Mbps, so you get more bits per frame in 30fps.

Although there are many features I like about my G9, the ability to save settings to the Custom Modes is one of the most useful as there may need to be multiple settings to achieve what you want and having the ability to get to them in an instant is key. Thanks for sharing these settings for slow motion.

Love your tutorials. I find that getting birds in flight in VFR difficult to capture, getting to focus on it and track it like you do at 11:37 .
@naturesimagephotography3 жыл бұрын
Thank you! When your subject is a long way from the camera the depth of field is relatively strong. I have also found that depth of field is much stronger when shooting video. So the bird can fly a fair way without going out of focus. But that worked with a bird flying from 50mtrs to 40 mtrs. It would not have worked if the bird was much closer to the camera.

Lovely footage. When choosing a shutter speed is there any reason you don't follow the standard practice of doubling the frame rate? For example: 30 FPS , then use1/60s 180 FPS, then use 1/360s
@naturesimagephotography3 жыл бұрын
I have basically been taking my ideas from other videos I have seen on KZbin. I am very new to video which is why I say people should do their own research rather than follow my example. I have understood that at very fast shutter speeds the video can look jerky, so when I shoot the slow motion video I try to keep the shutter speed as slow as possible for that particular frame rate. I am happy with the results but still learning. Yesterday I tried 30P video for the first time so I could shoot even slower motion...180 FPS to create 17% playback. Still learning! Hopefully I will never stop.
@AikiNick3 жыл бұрын
Understood. I agree the footage looks great. Like you I'm learning about video and one of the things I learned about is the so called 180 degree shutter angle rule. However, it's not as simple as the film days when everything was in 24fps. I found this article interesting: wipster.io/blog-for-creative-teams-who-want-better-collaboration-tools/debunking-the-180-degree-shutter-rule

If you plan to export in 30fps then set the camera to 8bit 1080p 30fps 100Mbps and use VFR to slow to 180fps. He uses 60fps as his base because he exports in 60fps. Because the 60fps and 30fps are both 100Mbps, you will have more bits per frame in 30fps and therefore better quality. So this is the best setting if you plan to export in 30fps.
@sue.Hoo1233 жыл бұрын
@@TurtleTimeTV thanks, video is very new to me, I still don’t know why I would want 30 or 60p, I only post to Facebook, or play on my iPad or MacBook. All these numbers and different formats are double-Dutch to me! I have set these VFR settings to C3-3, I’ve left High Speed Video as default on the Movie setting on the Mode dial. I’ll take two short movies one after the other in unchanging conditions and see what the difference is.
@TurtleTimeTV3 жыл бұрын
@@sue.Hoo123 30fps is the standard for most video, including television. I personally don't like the look of 60fps. Some people like it for sports and stuff with quick movements. As a newbie, I would suggest you stick to 30fps because it is the standard in most instances. 24fps is the standard for cinema, but that conversation is a little too much to get into on here. Just know that setting the camera to 8bit 30fps 1080p 100Mbps and using variable frame rate to get to 180fps will result in the highest quality out of the G9.
@TurtleTimeTV3 жыл бұрын
Thanks. I'm a professional videographer and I didn't even realize the G9 had two different ways to do slow motion. I'd much rather use VFR, but I thought high speed video was the only way to do it. It gets confusing because on the S1 it only has high speed video. On the GH5s it only has VFR. On the S5 you have to create your preset from the S&Q mode dial. I really wish they would keep it consistent because I own all of these cameras. 🤣🤣

@@garybrown9719 I love the 24-105. Its got stabilization built in and it is an amazing macro lens too! I shoot entire weddings on the 24-105. I usually use the Sigma 70-200 for my second camera to get close ups at the ceremony and reception, but the 24-105 on the S1 handheld is my go-to for the rest of the day. Its great on the S5 as well. I just got the Panasonic 85mm f1.8 so that will likely live on the S5 for my low light shots. I usually bring the Sigma 50mm f1.4 for low light, but the 85mm Panasonic is much lighter.

Unfortunately I don't have enough knowledge of all the video technicalities to answer that question. I'm sure it would have something to do with the Record Quality setting you have selected in the video menu. Depending on recording frame rate etc., some features would be available with some settings and not others. I know that's a bit vague and doesn't help much. I suggest going to this Facebook page and asking your question there. It is full of G9 users who seem happy to help with tech questions. facebook.com/groups/PanasonicG9

Great tutorial. The G9 is excellent value, though your slo-mo video has mains hum on my tv when you have not added music.
@naturesimagephotography3 жыл бұрын
Thanks for the feedback. I guess you can't please everybody! I was told by a friend who listens to my videos with headphones that it was very jarring to to have that background hum appear and disappear at different times during my videos. So with his comments in mind, I let the sound recording run a little longer so that it would not disappear and then suddenly reappear, but at least remain consistent throughout. In my defense, I am a humble photographer and a long way from professional standard when it comes to producing videos for KZbin.

@@naturesimagephotography You have taken my comments personally, which was not the intention. My suspicion is the G9 may have introduced the hum, but I'm not an expert either.

No not taken personally at all. I was amused that in addressing an issue made by one person, I inadvertently created a new issue that was noticed by another! I am actually glad you mentioned it as I am still working on improving my sound recording. I may just introduce some quiet music wherever there is an extended break in the voice-over. And I can assure you that the hum is attached to my voice-over recording, not from the VFR clip itself.

Hi Andrew, I've been trying to follow along with your tutorials to set up my new G9. Considering I we appear to have the same genre interests and I'll be hiring you as my local in-person tutor in the near future it made sense to me that I set the camera up the same as yours to get started. However, it would seem what's displaying on the screen is different to yours in some key areas. I have firmware 2.2 installed. Have you updated yours? Perhaps this is the reason?

Hi Daniel, sorry for taking so long to reply, I was out teaching all day yesterday. And thanks, I look forward to meeting you when the time comes. Re the screen display, I think I am still on 2.0 but I don't think the firmware is the issue. Can you send me a snapshot (phone photo will do) of what you are seeing...it it's what I think it is I may have a solution. Send to andrewgoodallphotographer@gmail.com

Thanks informative but I don't think you've really explained why VFR is better than High Speed.
@naturesimagephotography3 жыл бұрын
Yes I probably should have spent a minute on that. As an inexperienced videographer I can't really explain the reasons, but the video output is of higher quality with VFR. So in simple terms the videos just look better...plus the extra versatility that comes with being able to choose settings etc. I did an earlier video that briefly looked at this topic, although the focus was more on the custom mode dial than the video. But it had a comparison between a model shoot using high speed and a model shoot using VFR. You might like to check it out: kzbin.info/www/bejne/hIbchnqam9aNbtE
