Thank you for this very useful and delightful video. I always enjoy seeing palette setups especially when they contain information on the "why" certain pigments are included. It helps me make informed adjustments to my own palette or solve a palette challenge I might be having. Your videos are always informed and insightful and applicable. Thank you!

Thank you for your help! I set up my new little travel palette with your color recommendations! I'm still new to outdoor painting so this is really helpful!

I'd also be interested to see a color chart of the small palette ... I'm intrigued by what mixes you might be able to create there. Thank you again.

I'm not very good with color charts because they're such a repetitive task and I'd rather paint a picture in that time. 😉 At one point I created a really big color chart that included almost all of the colors in this palette: juliabausenhardt.com/color-mixing-how-i-test-colors-and-make-color-studies/ But I will put the topic on my list - maybe a video about exploring different mixes with that palette. 😊

Hi Julia, I actually have a question. How do you hold your gear while drawing in the field. I feel like I have not enough arms… 🤷♂️ My palette is rather small (12x ½ naps) and handy, but mine don’t have these little metal ring on the bottom wich some palletes have. Is this an issue?

Good question, I know the feeling! My palette has a ring that goes around the thumb, and it is helpful, but I often clip the palette to the sketchbook with a clamp. Not perfect, but it works. And sometimes I just look for a spot where I can sit down and put the palette next to me. A larger and less flexible solution would be to bring a tripod with a pochade box or easel at the top where you can fasten all your tools. Hope that helps!

@@NatureSketchbook Thank you, I’ll definitely try the approach with the clamp! Sounds affordable, easy and lightweight

flo 620 some folks also set up a kind of large board, like a large clipboard and find ways to attach their materials to the board. This could still be held in the lap or in the nondominant arm while standing. I use a version of this myself. Tiny strong magnets make all the difference. Some folks use a clipboard and also a shoulder bag or cross body bag. They set it up so that their brushes and water cup stand upright in the bag and can be reached while painting. Happy painting!

@@ad6449 sounds good, thanks. I'll try it. I thought about magnets myself. I use a water brush, so I at least don't have to care about water and brushes.

flo 620 That makes sense re the water brushes. I don't use them myself as I find them too wet; it's hard to control the water flow. Yet if they suit your style, they definitely make things a lot easier.
