Prince firing Jimmy Jam and Terry Lewis was the best thing that ever happened to them. I just can't understand why Morris and Jessie had to be present while never having any say in that situation. I don't know about Jessie because he did well on his future solo album but for Morris, it was like seeing the rug getting pulled right from under him in terms of his group's sound and music production.

The thing that people don't understand is that this was when they were on their way up, the Minneapolis Sound wasn't establish yet, they were not mainstream yet, they were not superstars yet. So you have Prince trying to put Minneapolis sound on the map and suddenly everybody wanted a piece of the pie, course he forbidden his team to share with others what he created. Prince firing Jimmy Jam and Terry Lewis was the best thing for them? we will never know, but one thing we know for sure, is that uptight people from L.A. (and from privilege families) ended up using the Minneapolis to make money, it was sad and pathetic and it was the beginning of the end of a pure art form.

Sad about Morris' drug use. It's understandable why he got so depressed---he essentially had no identity of his own, limited opportunity for growth in his vocation, and all his perceived success & autonomy were in the hands of another. Would drive anyone mad.
@horrorpowerfilms9481 Жыл бұрын
Morris started using drugs before Prince got him a record deal. The Time first album was released in 1981, and by 1982 they all were training for the Purple Rain film, by 1983 they were shooting the film. So it was about 2-3 years of The Time development (including the tours and time on the studio), I'm pretty sure that's a short time to call it a "limited opportunity for growth", 2 years it isn't like The Godfather generation dynasty. In any job you get in your life time you will not become the boss in 2 years, come on! Morris and friends never saw the bigger boat, some call it ego, others call it hungry for success. At the end they sold out Prince's concept and ruined the Minneapolis Sound for ever.

There's been so many versions about it, Prince even told Rolling Stone magazine that Morris did the firing and that he consulted the whole deal with Morris before they let them go. Once Prince died, everybody's playing victim, BUT it was Prince's project and I'm not talking about just one band, I'm talking about the whole Minneapolis sound. I'm pretty sure Prince had the right to not let his concept go to Pop oriented products like Lionel Richie, but hey it went to Janet Jackson, so it was downhill from there. Sad.
