Learning the "hard way" is sticking around for years when you are not getting paid, hoping things will change. You end up burning through the best years of your career and ending up broke at the end of it. James Brown is funk, he is the embodiment of funk, he was born to create funk, he had his shortcomings like everyone else, but he created funk music from scratch, it did not exist (or was disguised in other genres) until James dragged this genre out and brought it to the world as a new kind of music, no one knew that you could play music like that, all these syncopations, the use of 16 notes on all musical instruments, when each instrument including bass instruments are played like drums, hence the slap bass, because Larry Gramm tried to play the bass like a drum instrument copying the new genre of James Brown's music, all these grooves, the emphasis on the first beat of each bar, the mixing of accents, etc. - this is all James Brown dudes

Three of my uncles were working musicians. One time the youngest of the three was doing a gig at a college in Virginia back in the 60's. When they got down there to the gig they heard that James Brown was performing on campus that night at a different venue on campus that was much bigger than where they were playing. When they finished their show, he practically ran over to where JB was performing. After the show he got back stage and met James Brown. He told him about how his band was playing at a different venue that night on the same campus. He said JB couldn't have been nicer. He spent the next hour with him, talking to him about the music business and what it took to be successful. When my uncle went to leave he profusely thanked him for taking the time to talk with him. James took out a glossy black & white publicity photo and autographed it for him.

James had that old skool mentality that many Black musicians had back in the day. As a musician myself, I dealt with that approach a lot in my early days. A lot of it came from how most of them got screwed so bad by managers and record companies. But a lot of it was also fueled by ego and greed, unfortunately. James had the entrepreneurial spirit and wanted to be a role model for young Blacks, but not at his own expense lol. The "do as I say, not as I do" attitude. Fortunately for Bootsy, being let go by James helped him find his own voice and was the best thing for him.

Some contrast before we judge him just for being a terrible person: James Brown, Jr. was born in a one-room shack in Barnwell, South Carolina in either 1928 or 1933, although May 3, 1933 seems to be the most accepted date. His parents separated when he was four (some sources say two) and he didn't see his mother again for over two decades. When he was around six, he and his father moved to Augusta and James went to live with his Aunt Honey, who ran a brothel. There, James was reportedly beaten by johns, as well as his father. To pay his way, young James shined shoes and was also sent out to procure customers for his aunt.

So strange.. If you listen really closely you can hear adult Butthead narrating the video! lol I know MJ does these but I never could hear either character, Beavis or Butthead, in his voice when he speaks normally for interviews etc. For whatever reason, maybe bc he is narrating not just talking casually, Butthead definitely comes out! "Tony Cook came into the fold shortly after Bootsy bowed out". That is when it is on full display! Exactly same way he pronounces Bootsy in B and B! Same lisp, everything! The you hear Hank Hill / Mr. Anderson right after when says "Mr. Brown's hometown of Augusta, Georgia!" lol Awesome
