THANK YOU EXACTLY MY POINT❤ (Istg I really did love some of Erika Ishii (American rooks) deliveries during the fade scenes and reacting to Varrics death. Also some during lucanis finally romance scene. Some of those, Rook actually sounds distressed, their voice broke a couple times talking about varric. So Erika did us some justice there! But YES WHAT IS UP WITH THOSE REACTIONS? THEY SHOULD BE UNIQUE.

Completely unrelated, but - the scene where Teia kills Aelia is just chef's kiss. The scene composition, the camera shots, the audio, how Aelia falls into the camera - perfect. In terms of cinematography, this game's a 10/10

I love Harding and her death made me cry after loving her in Inquisition, but there was just no way I was going to sacrifice Davrin in my play through. 🥲 Now after beating the game, and seeing the way Assan dove in for him, I firmly stand by my decision.

Just getting there on the final mission. For a game that hesitant to go dark and sad for 90% of the time, this final act is such a departure lol. You have to sacrifice your companions. Also anyone feels a bit jarring that the final romance scene after the gillanain mission? I have to reload a save cause my romantic option was sent to the grave lmao. Also you just lost your friends, it felt off to get the final romance scene there. Imo it should be immediately when you start the point of no return missions

Because BioWare was hissy pissy that people during Inquisition almost always had Stroud so they never thought twice to sacriface their Hawke's. For some reason BioWare was very much into idea of sending people to die. I don't know why.

I was under the impression that scene was always gonna be your two highest affinity companions. Because Davrin was my romance and Harding was my highest affinity friend. So I was like--oh damn, it's always gonna be one of the people you care most for either your lover or best friend...then I found out these two were set and I think that was just a missed opperunity for impact. (I would have always defaulted to chose my love interest, but the in pact of losing your best friend or lover and having to pick between the two would have made that scene so much more impactful and painful for other players that didn't get that same feeling I did being like "WHY?! Really my future husband or my best friend...")

​​@@cracmar03 the only time that choice was tough was the playthrough where my world state had Allistair as a warden. Then I sat and stared at the screen for a while thinking what a Sophie's choice that actually was. I mean, when it's Loghain... die, my guy. I pretty much always kill him in Origin, so what a wonderful few extra years he gets looking at all his maps. But when the choice is between Hawke and Stunt Warden #2, excuse me if I don't think too hard. While I appreciate that choices like Harding/Davrin elevate the RPG experience, they do make it hard to have characters return in any larger way. Warden Alistair could be a companion. King Alistair... That's some fancy exposition to make that work. "There's a third brother you've never heard of, he's a twin, and putting him in a crown frees me up!" Whichever companion didn't die in Veilguard would still need to be largely written out of any future games for the sanity of the game builders.

No, they just die when you left out their Personal quests and they didn't have the Chance to grow (aka become "hero of the veilguard"). Except Harding or Davrin (+ Assan), depends on who you chose in the beginning of the endgame.

I guess even if they have the Hero of the veilguard status and your faction status are high, they can still die if you don't choose the right job for them. But its not just luck. They tell you what the task needs and you choose the most fitted for it. It's difficult to mess up, but it could happen.

Davrin or Harding are the only ones that are doomed and I think that was deliberate cause I think the developers knew they’d be very beloved that’s why they didn’t make the choice someone like Bellara or Taash where honestly I wouldn’t have cared as much.

@@luisz222 I personally have never cared for Harding and Davrin is only cool because he has a griffon. So the decision was VERY easy for me -- Davrin must survive because of Assan. Now if the choice was between people I actually cared about it would have been more difficult. Emmrich is the only companion in Veilguard worth a damn and he was not an option, so who cares? Harding it is then, because she does not have a griffon.

Fortunately I learned my lesson in the prologue where Harding was severly injured. In the endgame I was like: ”I will not send my beloved Harding anywhere she can die”. She was in my team throughout the final missions. So yeah sorry Davrin and Assan.

Having one of your companions dies pisses me off knowing you can't killnone of the enemies in their companion quest. Harding's death specifically made me mad because why didn't like allow her to use her titan powers or something to save herself. Also why couldn't you be a little more emotional over your lost love when you were trapped in the prision like your made to jsut be like oh I'm sad but I still gotta fight gods should have gave you a cutscene with you weeping or something and the team conforting you. Like Bioware really fumbled the bag withthe writing in this game. and after years of enjoying the previous games I just don't understand why they didn't go bold with this game especailly since they ahd massive layoffs. This would have been a perfect time to show people they can still redeem themselves. I know EA is apart of the reason but with as much time as they spent trying to compare this to BG3 and months doing interviews overhyping up the game and how good it is instead of actually focusing on the writing and perfecting the craft of this game I'm jsut a little disappointed.

I think part of reason in prison is because this very prison is BUILT to held you on regrets. That's why Solas couldn't escape. To escape you need to NOT go into despair and regrets. You NEED TO move on, unlike he.

The reaction fits, they do have to keep moving, it just kinda sucks there seems to be no individuality or unique dialogue amongst each one. It's just an "Oh no, they died, that's sad" and nothing beyond that. Even if they HAVE to keep moving, it doesn't take much for them to have a second or two to falter and break before pulling themselves back together. Maybe I'm just a sucker for romance and the dramatic, who knows. 😆

It kinda drives me crazy how Rook doesn't have much reaction beyond saying "no" and/or hanging their head -- and then they're moving on ten seconds later like nothing happened. I was expecting more. Tears, anger, screaming and raging, snapping at other comrades, being reckless, etc. I know shock is a way some people respond, but it is only ONE type of response to seeing someone you care for and love die.

I mean I send Emmrich which the Crows and he didn't die. I think if don't complete quest like Neves questline U have more powerful enemies.. Like Aelia in this case. If U done everything and have them all as heros and high faction rank nobody dies. The only death you can't prevent is davrin or lace.

i think faction strength and companion eligibility have a role to play in whether they live or die. ex. Emmrich's not a good choice to fight the giant construct, and the pop-up at the end said the wardens and watchers that were backing him up weren't at full strength

@@beanndog I disagree. In my playthrough, I picked Emmerich to fight the construct. He was HoV and lived. I think you either need rank 3 faction *or* HoV for your companion to make it through--or you might need both?

@@mapletea-p2m Need HOV status for them to survive, plus a strong faction, but you lose important characters in some of the routes (like Strife with the Wards) if someone is ill-suited to the job. Or your companion in the some of these instead. Been playing around with them a bit. Strife died in my play testing Lucanis at the wards, as he's considered ill-suited for the job.

@@EtGemitusMortis You don't necessarily need them to be HOV, so long as you fulfill the other requirements. I did a test on my recent playthrough where I didn't finish certain companion quests, certain factions were only at 2 stars, but I picked the best companions for the job. Everyone lived. The only one I'm not entirely sure about is whether the -spoiler- blighted companion needs to be HOV, but I think that's the only one that's actually required because they have no supporting faction.

Either Davrin or Harding have to die and there is nothing you can do about it. For the other companions, your approval rating doesn't matter, you can be maxed out and they still die if put to the wrong task. So choosing the right person for the job is pivotal.

Offering my input just because I was able to look back of some clips I took from Act 3- I think if and HOW you resolve each companions quest matters too. In this vid, the Venatori War Mage is Aelia, the antagonist you have to fight at the end of Neve's mission. In my game since she's caught by the threads, there's just a generic venatori mage instead and the companion I sent (Taash) was just fine. There definitely might be other variables though, since I also sent Emmrich to deal with the construct w the Grey Wardens and he survived. Maybe it's based on the decision you make in Davrin's quest (Griffons) that strengthens/weakens the Wardens orrr just how strong the faction is? IDK but good luck and I wish you well in getting the good ending 😭

i feel like there’s too many options that are scripted in as one character, that could’ve been another and it relies solely on the player and rook’s relationship to that character with its emotional impact on the player, and rook. lucanis being an illusion in the fade is a good example, that’s going to hit so much more if rook is romancing him and i’m actually shocked that even if you don’t, its always him and i feel like the game never really explains why, especially if we look at it from an angle where someone’s rook is barely friends with him, more comrades.

If one's 'careful' whilst playing nobody's except Davrin or Harding has to die... raise all the factions approval, do companions quests and make them heroes of the Veilguard and it'll be fine no matter who you send to do what. Seeing this I do agree, however, there's a tiny bit of lack of emotions for those that fall during the quest... I get they had no time to stop grieving and all, still... I guess I was more pissed at both Rook and Inquisitor to make it out of this one too without a scratch, though? Idk I felt like the game was preparing us to lose one of the main protagonist and you can literally get through with 'just' Davrin or Harding... against Evanuris that powerful? Felt a little too Disney-ian not lose one playable character, given the others are basically up to the player...nevertheless I truly enjoyed the game!

From a roleplaying perspective, Rook logically doesn't know that they're gonna end up sacrificing themselves for the team, but from the outside perspective as the person controlling the pc... My reasoning on the run I did sacrifice him was that he wanted to make up for not killing Razikale at Weisshaupt and how broken up he felt at surviving that, that he should've died when Razikale was struck down. And this was his chance to do that properly. I hate sacrificing either Davrin or Harding, though, as my question ends up being where was the other two companions that was with the second team that whole time???

I think if your standing with each group is high enough they will be stronger and the risk of your companion dying is lower.

I also think Aelia has to be alive. You can defeat Aelia earlier in the game as part of Neve's quest. Otherwise it's just a random mage in her place that isn't as powerful.
