I hope you know that, fourteen years later, you're still helping people. Finally learned how to do this bun and it was so easy with your instructions. Add a hair stick (I have gorgeous Chinese hair sticks) and it looks incredible. Thank you so much.

it's been 15 years and my hair is now cut above my shoulders. But OH Ms. Torrin! THIS BUN CHANGED MY LIFE. I literally wore it every single day for over 13 years. You saved me from Sensory Issues, gave me Gibson Girl do's, and were thought of SO often. Nearly every day. I literally came to get it to send it to a friend. You're appreciated all these years later!!

Thank you for the verbal instructions! With the other videos I could follow it fine until the very end and then it wasn't clear what to do the loop of hair. I've got it now and have something different to add to my hair repertoire. (My hair is almost classic length but very fine so it makes a deceptively small bun)

They make very simple sticks for dudes. Plain wood or a stainless steel chopstick look perfectly masculine. This bun is one of the "stick" buns, which means it's a fast easy thing to throw up with one stick. It wouldn't hold with a hair tie. You can shorten a stick so it will be less visible if you need to.

Mine doesn't like to stay without a stick. I think my hair is just too heavy. I always wear mine with either a stick, a moon, or a Flexi-8.

I'm not sure why it's called a Nautilus, but it's "special" because it's one of the few buns that will hold comfortably with only one stick. It takes such a short amount of time and is so secure and comfy that it's one of my top three go to buns.

Yes, your hair sticks are pretty. I still maintain that hair sticks are for people who are organized. Me? I just go and dig out a knitting needle. Those I car about enough to not lose. I know I bought a pair of hair sticks, and I should have a forked one somewhere. Not a clue where.

My hubby. He plays guitar mostly, but also the bass, mandolin, banjo, and the bouzouki (it's a Greek instrument that sounds kinda like a mandolin and a sitar had a baby.) If it has strings, and you can pluck it, he can play it...or figure it out. :o) I play the drums. You can check out our band here on YT...just search for Nekkid Country. LOL.

@Nyctyris Try pulling the part of the outer loop that is furthest to the outside down over the other part of the loop at the bottom. That will make the piece of the hair that's acting like the hair-tie hold ALL of it securely instead of it just falling out again. If that's confusing, let me know and I'll try to clarify.

Don't be jealous of other girl's hair even if theirs happen to be longer/redder, blonder whatever. You have fantastic thick locks that are in terrific condition! You should seriously consider a career in cosmetology, your updos are wedding worthy. Especially here with the Nautilus bun. you make it so much more simple and straightforward.

I get most of my sticks from Etsy now. These were a present for my birthday. :o) Oh, and as you are one of fine haired gals, look for Spin Pins or hair screws. Two of those will hold your hair REALLY well. They replace a ton of bobby pins and they're super comfortable.

I've been wearing this bun nearly everyday for almost two years now, and my hair goes to under my bum, so quite an amount XD and I've found that if you wrap the ends around reasonably tight, the bun will hold on it's own no matter what I do, be it running around, lounging, and even sparring! In fact, the longer my hair got, the better the bun held! As for why it's better to start with a lower ponytail for it? Because GRAVITY. You can totally make it higher, I've done so, but it tends to not hold as much. I think I'm done rambling :P

It's the old man's mandolin - he plays the stringed instruments around here; I do all the drumming. LOL. It's a Washburn - it was a Christmas present from my Gram. It took him about a week to get it down pat. Something about it being upside down? He's a guitar player - after playing with that mando for weeks, he picked his guitar up again and hilarity ensued.

Those sticks came from Long Locks and you'll probably want a stick with at least five inches of usable length. If you'd like to use only a single stick for the nautilus, I'd probably go six or seven.

Hi Torrin, it can hold without sticks, also your hair. You don't have to twist the hair rest around the base. Without twist, it holds even better. And when you turn the loop a bit anticlockwise before putting it around the base wrapping, it becomes even tighter and more secure - and is really self-holding. It is always a challenge to make the loop exactly that it fits the rest - not too tight and not too loose.

@musigalglo I think I know what you mean, but it's not even that my hair falls out - it will stay put for about 10 seconds and then just gently untwist itself (as opposed to collapsing sideways or something). I find my hair very difficult to bun in general (always slides out after a few hours) and even very tight braids seem to come loose :(

Alice Dee Miss Alice, look for some spin pins. Just two will hold up all sorts of buns for me and they replace a myriad of bobby pins. You can find them at drug stores and Walmart and those sorts of places. Two pins and they won't fall out. You literally screw them in and out. They are a piece of cake and super sturdy.
