Thanks for the video, but not much left of what I remember. Served there for about a year in '71-'72. Prior I served aboard the USS Independence CVA-62 for 2 1/2 years. After making E-4 I qualified for shore duty, I applied and then found out I was being assigned to NAVFAC Point Sur. Before leaving the ship I received a packet from Point Sur and in the cover letter they said what their purpose was Classified. I told my Chief about that and he left, then came back with a Popular Mechanics Magazine with all the details of the Sonar including a drawing of the unit put on the sea floor. When I arrived at Point Sur and had my talk with the CO he again said he could not tell me what their purpose was, even though I had a Top Secret Cripto Clearance. So I told him that I already knew and explained the Popular Mechanics Article. I'm sure the Russians knew too and that these basis were now obsolete as something new was far better in tracking submarines. The Navy just used that as an excuse to close those basis.

i was there in 1970-1971. I got out 90 days early. I was E-4 Commisaryman, watch captain in the galley. Not much left of it today. I loved this video, because it's been 50 years since I was there last. Wow! Time flies. I don't remember the Exchange. Was it operating in 1970? I watched The Wild Bunch in the theater. I sat in the projection room with David Montoya, a great guy from Pueblo, Colorado. I wonder what happened to all those guys. When they gave me the orientation, it was the XO and he told me that they were listening for Russian subs.

@@Sargent.Pierce I reported there in early June '71. I was a YN3 low man in the main office building. I came from the USS Independence CVA-62 after 2 1/2 years of sea duty. During my time at NAVFAC Point Sur was the very best food I ever had in the Navy!!!!!! I cannot remember if the exchange was there either, but I remember the bar. You are absolutely right when you say how the Time Flies by!!!!!

Your video was enjoyable to watch but funny, watching your interpretation of the buildings This was our base in 1970-71 after getting back from Vietnam. You went through my room in the barracks. To me the base is a part of my youth and each building was a part of our lives.. Busy writing memoirs and the base is the story I'm working on now. To you the relics of the building is the interesting part. for the people that were there it was the interaction of the people. I Was back many times and watched it slowly, and depending on your perspective either decay or go back to nature.

Harry: we are working on the history of the NAVFAC and will open for tours in the next few months. We'd be interested in your memories of Pt. Sur. Could you reply to info@pointsur.org? We'd love to hear from you.

I was there at the same time as you in 1970-1971. I think the video was shot in my cubicle in the barracks as well, but I don't remember the exchange at all. I had some good friends there, David Montoya, Eddie Gaudoin, Byers. I'd love to know what happened to them. I'm working on a book too about my time at the Navy base. I lived in Big Sur, renting a cabin with my wife for a big chunk of my time at Point Sur. I was the Watch Captain in the galley for about two years, cooking the meals for the crew.

Good to see you back. I used to live in Bexley, Kent (UK) and not far away was Hall Place, a stately home said to be haunted by the Black Prince who was killed by a stag after a hunt - sort of justice. Anyway, during the second World War it was used as a U.S. Navy listening station for German Navy transmissions (us Brits can't be good at listening - something my wife would agree with). That part of Kent, bordering London and over the Thames from Essex, is fairly flat up to the North Sea. Would think the personnel based there had a bit more comfort than the Point Sur folks, albeit they had to share with the Black Prince. Love these places, thanks for the video.

I was stationed at Point Sur for two years, maybe 1969-1970 or 1971. I can't remember now. We had a lot of Seebees on base after tours in Vietnam and I think they did the maintenance of the base. All stores came from Fort Ord. In the galley, we ordered from the army base and it was delivered in Navy trucks. I served as Watch Captain, the cook for the base. We had 120 men to feed and I cooked the meals for all of them with the assistance of four scullery slaves who had KP duty for 90 days. In the video, you go to the right in a smaller dining room. That's the Officer's mess. In the kitchen area, where there is a shallow pit, we had steam kettles which were actually too large for our purposes, but they were probably the smallest size available. There was also two ovens in the back. The video went into the walk in refer and stores in the back. The office was used by Petty Officer First Class Hudson when I was there.

Enjoy your perspective and videos. I even used a music detector to find out what one of your songs was (from an older video, Fixed Income :), and I promptly bought the album! They owe you royalty!! HA! I've done comm professionally for many years and always enjoy learning more. I think I know a lot and then something happens or somebody says something that changes my whole perspective on a given topic. Your info has done that more than once! Thanks!

Thanks man.. Yeah, I'm still kicking and fighting. Had to take a little break and re-evaluate my channel. I pissed off some people in high places when one of my vids criticized their gear. They had me on some infractions a-kin to j-walking. I used up all my political capital and just got a email reprimand. Will get back at it sometime.

Very cool ! When They decommissioned NTC all of the buildings were fun to explore before we used them for training. The desalination plant looks like an onsite wastewater plant. Thanks for sharing and I hope all is well with you.

We got our water from a well above the base. In some photos, you can see the tank on the hillside opposite the highway. I think that area was wastewater too. I can't say that I ever visited it, but there had to be sewage facilities. It's not like shipboard where they just flush it all over the side.

I was stationed there from 82 to 84. What we did was known but how we did it was not. The Pop Mech article was only partially accurate and lacked certain specifics. The place for me was less about the work, though I liked it, and more about the people - both good and bad. A little sad to see it so run down but interesting nonetheless.
