Naval talks about the importance of valuing your time, and how this was the single most important thing for his success.
Enjoy!
- My Notes:
* When I realize that something is a waste of my time, I leave immediately.
* No time for formalities, dressing up, business trips.
* This annoys people, but is important that you value your time. It is the most important thing you can have (more than friends, money). That doesn't mean you can't relax. It's OK, the thing is doing the things you want.
* As long as you are doing what you want, is not a waste of your time.
* Remember, you are not responsible for making other people happy That is their problem.
(P.D. I'm not any of the speakers on the video)

"You are not responsible to make other people happy" Sounds so simple but yet it is the hardest lesson to learn in a marriage. So true. The minute I stopped outsourcing my happiness to my spouse, we became much happier together. So strange how that works.

I see some people annoyed by the "do not spend your time making other people happy” statement. I assume what he means is that you need to take care of yourself first. That may seem selfish, but if you're giving away all your time to other people there's a good chance you'll end up burnt out and bitter. Especially if you realize people aren't appreciating your efforts. Also, if you just follow his logic it means if doing things for other people, i.e. volunteering at a homeless shelter, truly brings you fulfillment and happiness then that's a good use of your time by your own principles. The point is, don't let yourself be used by others. TLDR; don't waste your life doing what other people think you should do: doing stuff with friends that you don't like to do just because you don't want to upset them and think "you should be social", appeasing the culture, following trends to impress people, etc.

Nah, if you just focus on yourself, you will find yourself becoming happy, which will naturally bring joy to others. Ironically, once you've reached that state, it doesn't quite matter too who the receiver is. Not to sound like a prick, but why should only specific people receive your joy but not others, including strangers?
@theAMi88
@theAMi88 2 жыл бұрын
@@elliotlee9577 Incorrect logic. By this logic, a random stranger should receive the same amount of joy as the person who gave birth to you? Or that the people you don't necessary enjoy being around should receive the same amount of joy as the people you admire and respect? We take care of ourselves so that we can provide joy to the people we know, like, and respect. Don't jump on the liberal, western bandwagon, drinking the koolaid that everyone is equal. Group think. This is how pigs get slaughtered after their last big meal. That is incorrect logic by any societal and personal standards. If everyone should be treated with equality, then should you respect the likes of Mother Teresa or Mahatma Gandhi the same way you would a child rapist or a mass murderer? Let's use some common sense here, please. And by the way, you're not being a prick...just a little bit naive when it comes to that line of thinking. You're welcome ;)

@@theAMi88 groupthink? More like how the aghoris think. Yes the people who practice cannibalism. Why do you think they do it? Because they want to destroy the separation between good and bad to reach the ultimate. Extreme? Perhaps. But perhaps there is a lesson in there.

@@PickingNuggets @Allen Jacob I think Naval includes this point of view in his logic/philosophy of not wasting time. He also said, roughly in his words that "its okay to spend time on what you want to spend time on. Like this periscope video I am making" So spending time with family/service to others gives you happiness and your choice, so I guess it fits well with his philosophy.

How many of you were in a similar situation - at an event, meeting or gathering they felt was utterly pointless, but too polite to leave? Although in defense I have to say sometimes you can make it worthwhile by embracing the situation and making it interesting with action - do something crazy, leave your comfort zone.

Spend your time earning and learning I agree with that but “do not spend your time making other people happy”? That’s the definition of a selfish person. Life and love are meant to be shared and you have to give up some of your time to others to bring happiness to them. If you don’t want to bring any happiness to others then you could become a monk i and just live in isolation.
