Fourth and final day at DSEI 2023 in London, UK.
In this video, we focus two new vessel designs:
- British company Griffon Hoverwork introduced a new Landing Craft Air Cushion (LCAC) dubbed the Wyvern.
- Vard Marine and SH Defence were showcasing the Vigilance, an Offshore Patrol Vessel (OPV) tailored to the future needs of the Royal Canadian Navy.

I hope their modularity concept is actually functional. The LCS program failed partly due to that concept failing.

The US didn’t particularly execute it well and there was never the buy in required to deliver on the benefits. It also doesn’t particularly suit US doctrine or budget

@@Steve-eq8iz There's some cool concepts they're working on. A few being incorporation of MK-41 VLS cells and directed energy weapons.

Why not 60-70 tons? There are a lot of tanks in that range that cannot be carried by a 52 tons LCAC.

Nice looking ship looks like a great choice for the Canadian navy, but I wouldn't be surprised if Canada didn't buy it because that would make sense, and we all know that our federal government doesn't make sense or work that way and there cheaper than hell!

the kingston class needs to be replaced. but i think it needs to be able to support a helicopter and may need a heftier gun

a LCAC should have a payload capacity of no less than 76 tons - 84 tons . . . 52 tons is too less . . .

The US’s latest hovercraft has only just reached 70 tons weight - their current one can only carry around 40 tons

american LCACs could overload and carry an abrams. But considering the USMC ditched all their abrams thats sorta a moot point. If it can carry an overloaded tank for a long enough to get it for LPD to shore than thats probably sufficient. He doesn't say 54 short or metric tons. If its metric its about the same as LCAC

The market for air-cushioned landing craft larger (length, width, height) than the American LCAC is very small. Those dimensional constraints effectively determine the payload capacity. Given that Griffon was part of one consortium competing for the US SSC contract, DSEI taking place in the UK, and the depicted size of the craft, I'm sure that he was talking about tonnes: the SI standard that everyone but the US uses meaning 1000 kilograms. The LCAC can carry 54 tonnes (68 overload). The specified payload of the SSC is ~67 tonnes but I don't know if that is normal or overload.
