I see a lot of comments saying that this ship doesen't have enough firepower for his size, which is true, but, the thing is Italy doesen't plan to fight a war with China anytime soon and the same goes for all the other european navies. So having tons of vls is basically useless if the biggest treat you are going to face is sone yemenite drone which can be shoot down with the 76 mm gun or with electronic counter-measures intead of firing a multi-million dollar missile at it. The ship is fine for what it has to do.

They aren’t focusing on fighting in the Pacific, which is literally the other side of the world from them. This is not the case, the current FREMMs had a missile base that was mainly stable for defence, while the AVOS did not have a number greater than 32 VLS, but the Italian navy is changing. Mentality if we look at the PPA evo they will have 64 vls if we look at the new DDX that has now changed and they are called heavy cruisers From 14600 tons they will have 90/128 vls,The concept of carrying a high number of missiles does not mean that the ship is more powerful but not versatile, I remember that they also have 2-76 mm Strales which is a multi-role cannon and very effective in the anti-aircraft and missile and drone fields, this implements the saving of short-range missiles which have very high costs that a series With 3-dart shots, so if we consider the FREMMs as air defense they are more versatile than those that rely mainly on missiles for defense.

I am surprised by just how heavily armed the FREMM EVO is. Not only are they already talking about expanding the amount of vls cells to accommodate the future naval cruise missile from respectable baseline for a ship of this type, they also have an impressive gun arsenal with 2 main 76 mm guns and 2 (I think) 30 mm autocannons. I think I also see torpedo tubes amidships and countermeasures mounted next to that. So a quite respectable armament. When you consider that those cannons are well suited to taking out drones, this would be ideal for the Red Sea. So 16 vls cells is actually respectable for general purpose and ASW frigates. Generally only AAW frigates have more, so the FREMM EVO isn’t lacking in this regard. Furthermore when you realize that the main adversaries of the Italian navy are non state actors, in say the Red Sea, and the Russian navy, it makes sense. If you were to face China you certainly would need more, but the Italian navy arguably aside from occasionally providing a ship to participate in freedom of navigation exercises, wouldn’t have the need or capability and capacity to meaningfully contribute. Even the Marine Nationale and Royal Navy are limited in this regard and they have the most significant expeditionary capabilities of all European powers.

It needs more missiles. Even China can fit more on their frigates. To run out defending against attacks and having to go back to port to reload means ships need more missiles and VLS in particular to be relevant in the modern naval world.

I think the reason why the Italian Navy (MMI) chose this configuration is that MMI isn’t a blue-water navy but a green-water navy. The comparison with the US Navy or the Chinese one wouldn’t be fair. In spite of this, we should appreciate the fact that the Italian Navy is trying to adopt new technologies on its ships. The quantity is also a problem…

That's only on the FREMM PPA EVO variant that they can put 64 VLS, because it adds 32 in the middle of the ship. This new FREMM EVO only has 32 in the front.

How many VLS does it have ? The man talks a lot but beyond that there is room for A70 VLS 'in the back' I did not hear any number. The US Constellation class that is also based on the FREMM design has 32 MK41 vls. Not exactly a large number either.

A good and valid ship is not measured by how many missiles it has but by its multi-mission capability, If we take reference to the Russian ships sunk in the Black Sea they were well armed but ineffective against drones which will be the future weapon, but Meanwhile also against other threats, the Fremm and Horizon class In the mission in the Red Sea against the Houthis they proved very effective against drones and cruise missiles with the 76 mm strales, while the Americans and others had to use the missiles

Imagine going out there and buying the most expensive rifle you can find. You put everything on it. An expesive scope, a thermal that can be mounted in front of your scope, an off-set red dot, a light and a laser module connected to a switch pad. And then you buy a grand total of 16 rounds of ammo. Not more, not less. That's european ship design in a nutshell. Having sensors is great. But what are you gonna do about all the things you are sensing? Not firing missiles at them, that's for sure!

32 AA missiles plus 8AS Teseo. You also get 2 extremely capable 76mm Davide Strales, which proved extremely cost effective at shooting down Houtis missiles and Drones. Any Fremm in service can load 16 more VLS without extensive works in the dockyards because they are extremely modular. This is why the FREMM design was chosen as a blueprint for the Constellation. Keep in mind these are still Frigates, not Destroyers and VLS are not light or compact to fit inside a Hull that needs to be more than a missile carrier. Even extremely large frigates like the Germans (11000 tons+) don't carry more. Also keep in mind that the USN carries everything in VLS, while the FREMM and the PPA have separate launchers for AS missiles (Teseo or Exocet). The DDX will have 96VLS, because THAT is what Destroyers are for.

But that doesn't mean 1. They will get or 2. They actually need. They make too many excuses for failing to hold or take back territory. You West did not give us 100 B-2 stealth bombers that we need + a thousand Taurus cruise missiles so now Russia take our land on Chinese golf carts and 1960's BMP. No more excuses you fight with what you have and Ukraine has been given $200 billion worth of vastly superior weaponry to what Russia has.

​@HayMaker-tv2dm Yes, the EVO is the upgraded variant with a projected capability to carry up to 64 VLS cells for Aster, CAMM and MdCN missiles in addition to an uspecified number of Teseo Mk2 anti-ship missiles (at least 4) and the two OTO 76mm. Also the current FREMMS have the space to carry up to 32 VLS cells, but due to the current operations the Navy is taking part in, only 16 cells were mounted.

Indonesia bought Marcantonio Colonna and Ruggero Di Lauria from the Italian Shipyards. These two ships in the Light+ will be replaced by 2 EVO. The ship were not "Rejected" 🤦‍♂️: Italy just changed the original plan to have a lot of PPA in the light setup (pre Ukraine) for smaller ships (PPX), and increase the number of PPA in Full version (much more capable but more expensive) for fleet duties. The PPA (now MCS) is now a fully fledged AA/AS Frigate, with ASW capabilities, just smaller then a FREMM which is more capable as ASW and can stay at sea for longer. The original 7PPA, will be retained and the current 2 Light PPA will be upgraded (they are modular) to Light + (AA) or Full configuration. The PPA is an extremely capable multi role ship, not as capable as a FREMM, but more flexible and much Faster. Indonesia got a real bargain, and I think more PPA would be better then the 6 FREMM it was intended to order, especially in the EVO configuration. At the moment the Light + is the more advanced PPA in service in Italy, just coming back from the Haway, where it's weapon systems got certified for active use. The Full (C band+S) is undergoing the final trials on the Bande Nere and on the Trieste Flagship so is not even in active service.

People here seem to forget that a war ship is designed and many years before its construction, according to the nerds of the specific country. According to the Naval Act 2014 we do not want and need to project power to the oceans, not we need to export democracy. Our theater is what we call the "Enlarged Mediterranean" which is Mediterranean Sea and its access routes, the "Mare Nostrum" of the Romans. So we design and build war ships suited to our naval defense strategies

The all point of hypersonic is the super prise the enemy, sea skimming missile fly under the radar thanks to the planet curve and will be detected very late. Russian are having both low level, subsonic and high level high speed missile for those 2 reasons. France is working on a high speed, high manoeuvre anti ship missile, the UK and IT will have full access around 2030
