weight
@CardSharkOfficial2 ай бұрын
@@KiingOfKombat really not sure that's a limiting factor. Mistral 3 is less than 20 kilos according to a quick internet search, and is packed by 4 (2x2 grid, below 80 kilos total), whereas Aculeus LG rocket is packed by 22 and weighs 8.8 kilos ( if that's the laser guided rocket depicted here). Weight-wise, you could have nine Mistral in a given pod in a 3x3 grid for that weight, and it seems like it could fit in terms of geometry as well. And with less than 200 kilos by pod for the rounds, that would make less than 800 kilos for them in all four pods, and leave almost as much for their structure, as the total available payload is 1.5ton. Assuming, of course, you're comfortable packing Mistral missiles that densely. I know nothing of security requirements.
@mill27122 ай бұрын
If I were to guess, they're all different missiles for different roles. Most commanders like to have a variety of different munitions for different scenarios which may happen. Bur this thing is meant to be modular. Perhaps you could do just that if the mission requires such action.

Laser guided rockets are the cheapest and ready available ones on the market, but limit the engagement at one by one (laser guidance illuminator channel is just one in the tilting head) as already possible with Leonardo 76mm Superapido gun onboard french vessels, both not ideal if the attacking swarm have real big numbers, that's why the addition of 2 small point station, possibly 4 or more depending on the size of the ship too, armed for example by Typhoon 30mm gun loaded with 200 mixed rounds of already available API, impact HE and airburst HE, firing a burst of 3 each kind in total 9 munition add a last ditch defense for around a mix of 20 UAV/USV per station. The big problem is none of this weapons could defend a group of ships (convoy) as done for ASW/AAW threats surrounding it with four Destroyers from 10/15 nautical mile without using the main armament, Aster and Exocet in case of Marine Nationale, having all these systems at best a range of 5 nm which imply the addition of extra 4 Frigates to defend the group (convoy). Considering some countries have troubles to collect 4 Destroyers alltogether the addition of 4 Frigates for just one (1) convoy could require using all the available fleet of the country or expose it at shame!!! People forget 90% of the world trade are done by sea and if the sea control is lost the day after they'll lost their jobs...
@bulthaosen11692 ай бұрын
@@robertopiedimonte2078why would you need 4 frigates to defend a convoy? Ships are not going to be far apart in a convoy. I don't see much use of this system when guns can do the job of taking out drones. And reserve missiles for missile defense. This is even more true in a swarm scenerios as all your rockets or missiles get depleted. Guns carry much more ammo.
@robertopiedimonte20782 ай бұрын
@@bulthaosen1169 ships are like cars on highway and need a lot of room to maneuver. Close positioning is about 2 nm from each other, thus in a 10 nm side box you can fit 25 ships and escorting Destroyers must stay on the outside but not more then 10/15 nm from the center in order to be able to defend the whole convoy from air threats or detect submarines in their 90° sector of responsability, but to guarantee an extra layer against the deadliest convoy enemy, you'll need 5 Destroyers in order to have a minimum of ten (5x2) anti-submarine helicopters to fly the 20/25 missions per day usually request by the convoy protection. Inside a box 20 nm large you can fit a maximum of a hundred ships. You need the extra 4 Frigates to try to cover the drone gap in between Destroyers cause 76mm Superapido and rockets have a range of 5 nm, but 30mm guns are limited to 2 nm range, so with such a large convoy not all the drone gaps are covered even with 8/9 escort ships. In the end drones force you on smaller convoys then ones optimized against legacy targets as missiles and submarines, wasting resources and if drones overwhelm one of the Destroyers forcing it to use air-defense missiles or directly disabling it will open a door to the core of convoy! P.s.: just some numbers, modern container or oil ships are 300/400 meters long and need three lengths to slow down or six/seven to stop, so about 1 Km to slow and 2 Km to stop! It's up over one nm thus why the two nm distance in convoy

In that simulation they fired a lot of rockets at one drone swarm. Is potentially running out of rockets quickly still a major concern?
@jeanvaljean92932 ай бұрын
The idea is to create a ‘rain of iron’ on the swarm of drone. The bigger the swarm the bigger the rain is needed. But you should have other systems to complete the ship’s defense, lasers, rapidfire, electromagnetic attack (ew), decoys… If one is down or out of ammo, the other should take over. The us navy is currently planing the manufacturing of defense and or attack drones on ship to cover the needs as they come. No doubt the mn is planning the same, that’s way ng is insisting on the flexibility of the system and the diversity of weapons.

Imagine trying to reload these cannister c-ram style systems on the deck of a ship underway at sea in rough weather while it's trying hard to evade incoming enemy drone/missiles. The west has had automatic reload since the 80's with rail mounted SeaDart and equivalent systems, why has the technology gone backwards? VLS reload is done in port creating a crisis in fleet replenishment and why the Houthis have been so effective at blockading the Red Sea. Reloading systems at sea must be a priority in an era of shrinking budgets and reduced fleet numbers.
@jeanvaljean92932 ай бұрын
Because the reloading system is heavy, complex, expensive and take volume that could be used elsewhere. Reloading was dropped during the 90’s now that the need is back solutions are being designed.
