Euronaval: MBDA launches the new VL MICA NG air defence system

Ahead of Euronaval Online, the digital edition of Euronaval 2020, Stefano Bertuzzi, Head of Naval Systems at MBDA, explains to Naval News the capabilities of the VL MICA NG surface to air missile for surface ships.

Based on an entirely new design, the MICA NG missile inherits the external dimensions and unique concept that has made the MICA anti-air missile such a success for a quarter of a century. This concept means MICA features either an infrared or a radio frequency seeker on the same common missile body, allowing the operator, at the moment of firing, to select the best option to respond to the tactics adopted by the adversary.
On the MICA NG, a new infrared seeker based on a matrix sensor will provide increased sensitivity, while a new radio frequency seeker with an active electronically scanned antenna (AESA) will allow for smart detection strategies. The lower volume of electronic components will enable the MICA NG to carry a larger load of propellant, significantly extending its range, and the new dual-pulse rocket motor will provide additional energy to the missile at the end of its flight, improving its manoeuvrability and its ability to intercept targets at long range. In surface-to-air mode, the MICA NG will be able to intercept targets over 40 km away. Finally, maintenance and ownership costs will be significantly reduced thanks to internal sensors that will monitor the status of the munition throughout its life cycle.
The MICA NG missile will be available in series production from 2026.

I have a question I’m hoping someone can shed light on.How does the Mica missile compare to the CAMM missile?The CAMM can be quad packed but not the Mica,which would be a big incentive to buy the CAMM system.Many countries have opted for the VL Mica on their warships.Does this show the Mica is better,or perhaps less expensive?

I think the export success of the VL MICA has more to do with it being on the market for 10 years longer than the CAMM (14 years vs just 4), so more opportunities to sell. And remember it takes years from a ship design to entering service, so any that are going with CAMM might not have even been shown off yet. I think given another 10 years, the CAMM & ExLS combination will prove to be quite popular for arming Corvettes and OPVs.

Mica is a cheaper and simpler option for smaller ships like corvettes and patrol ships. And it comes with its own launcher so theres no need for a separate launch system.

@@RR-us2kp Pretty sure CAMM is cheaper. Focal plane arrays, AESA radars (on the NG) and TVC are not ways to make a missile cheaper... I wouldn't be surprised if MICA NG was AT LEAST twice the price of CAMM.

I'm confused my MDBA's marketing, I know there is some national protectionist aspect to the MBDA UK and France, but I don't get the VL MICA NG vs CAMM on a technical level... How does a smaller missile with greater drag claim a MUCH higher range than CAMM, nearly that of the vastly larger CAMM-ER? Is MBDA UK just being super coy because the UK MoD is leaning on them? And/or is MBDA France using the ballistic range as the "max range"? If so, I can't imagine MBDA UK is very happy that MBDA France gets to market their missile by a different rulebook. Also, I wonder how the 2 compare when it comes to cost?

More googling shows reports that the regular CAMM actually can reach about 60km.. not sure how effective it will be at that range tho.

​@@robt9048 160mm vs 166mm diameter means about an 8% increase in the cross sectional area of the motor, so 8% more chemical energy to turn into thrust. CAMM already uses a dual pulse motor. But doesn't have the extra weight (and drag) of the wings and the TVC unit. I don't know how manoeuvrable either will be at max range, I'd think MICA would be more so, thanks to the wings, but I'd think CAMM probably has more range, so at the same range, CAMM would be faster so might be more effective... I don't know. Would be interesting to see how CAMM evolves with time (given enough development funding).

The problem is only one: USA does not sell Mk41 quad pack launcher for any country. It did not sell its allies to Mexico or Brazil. Mexico uses Mk56 one missile for cell only. Sylver A43/50 are options in the market.

What the hell are u talking about? Finlands new corvettes will use a 8-cell mk41 with 32 ESSM, Germanys coming F126 will quadpack ESSM, the F124 Sachsen class uses quadpacked ESSM.

Why it can't be quad pack in a single cell? Being able to put 4 missiles on a single cell could be big leap on the weaponry of a ship carrying more missile loads on a compact space will give a tactical advance on ships weaponry,, mbda must design something like the Raytheons ESSM's quad pack capability..

@@watermirror i meant the whole system is too big. Not the missile. It has to be integrated into the ship from the get go. With it's own separate launcher. Vl mica is a smaller simpler system with single missile cells and a reused air to air missile. It is by all means a budget option for ships that want some kind of point defense missile system. Not for major surface combatants that need a vastly powerful air defence system.

MBDA is all about duplication of offerings as MBDA is a multinational consortium with each consortium member pooling resources, sharing costs but also focusing on national priorities. The result is a messy product line but it's still better than if they were all working alone

@@cicaklaut it does defeat the whole purpose of merging European defense companies into Mbda when the whole point was to end duplication and encourage EOS. The problem is national governments just won't invest in capabity unless its designed and built at home. In fact they would just do without the cabaility just like France and Germany have for over a decade without Brimstone.

@@lordtemplar9274 MICA has been around longer than MBDA. It was started in 1982 and entered service in 1996 (slightly earlier than ASRAAM, which was 1984 and 1998 respectively), but MBDA was only formed in 2001. But that was only the air-launched version. VL MICA only finished trials in 2008, and CAMM (pretty much a development of ASRAAM) came 10 years after that. It is strange that MBDA didn't lean on MBDA UK and MBDA France to work together more, but knowing Anglo-French politics, that was unlikely to go well. Now that the VL MICA NG has improved the sensors and range (previously where ASRAAM/CAMM were superior), it will be interesting to see if CAMM (not the ER) gets a second pulse motor to extend the range too to keep pace with the French team.

It won't fit because it's an air to air missile without foldable fins. Camm is based on an air to air missile. But it's built slightly different specifically for surface launch with folding fins. Mica is just reusing an air to air missile.

Nice missile, but no quadpacking ability. Firepower is important nowadays. You can have an 8 cell vls system with 32 vl mica missiles quadpacked inside. A small Corvette that carries 32 air defense missiles will have a chance to fire let's say all of its 8 anti ship missiles to sink more enemy vessels

I guess the obvious question they must have told you not to ask is “ how does this product compare with the groups other system Sea Ceptor”. To me they are head to head competitors which must be an uncomfortable position for the senior group management.

This one is French, they much prefer to go their own way Sea Ceptor is UK/Italy. Very similar with the in development long range surface to surface replacement for Harpoon, two versions, one for France one for the UK.

@invicta lucem In fact (according to Jane’s) Sea Ceptor has demonstrated a 60km range in testing, with CAMM-ER adding at least another 25km. It’s perfectly true that the two systems are competitors, but that’s not unique within MBDA: look at Exocet Block 3 and Marte-ER, for instance.

Mbda is producing dual pulse engines for years now... Turkey just started i don't who is behind. The Mica missile was developed from 1982 onward by Matra at this time, now integrated in Mbda. Current step in the life of a type of missile to be updated. Remind us what missile Turkey was producing in 1982 ? They are doing great things now but that doesn't mean that because they are doing it now that they are the only one and are the best at everything. Pride is nice but should not overcome objectivity.
