Poland’s foreign minister, Radek Sikorski, believes Alexei Navalny's death shows Russia’s leader Vladimir Putin will stop at nothing to kill his political opponents. “Navalny would have made a great leader of Russia, but now he will be an icon of Russian democrats,” he told DW at the Munich Security Conference. Sikorski also spoke about Russia's threat to European security and the need to bolster NATO alliances following comments made by former US president and frontrunner for the Republican nomination Donald Trump who threatened to abandon military allies who fail to meet their defense spending commitments should he be re-elected in November's presidential election.

The Polish foreign affairs minister is fair to remind us that the Europeans came to our aid (USA) after the 9/11 attacks. It’s our honor to support the EU now in return. As long as the EU is fully committed, we need to stay committed as well. Poland has earned our respect by doing more than their fair share as well, and we need to listen to them.

Will the USA stand by Poland or anyone else? We are not seeing evidence of that commitment coming out of Congress at the moment. In particular, I don't believe that the USA will come to the aid of certain European members of NATO. If Russia were to suddenly attack any of the Baltic countries, I suspect that there will be a lot of words and increased sanctions, but little more than fancy words from the safety of Washington DC and the lighting up of landmarks in the flag colours of each country attacked and then quickly forgotten. Forgive me, but I don't trust the USA and most certainly will not trust a Trump led USA.

@@jojo5107To put it simply: The Polish political scene is similar to the American one: The Civic Platform (PO) and Law and Justice (PiS) parties fight each other just like Democrats and Republicans in the US. That's why half of the citizens of Poland (pro-PO) hated the previous government, claiming that the country was heading towards the abyss, and now the other half (pro-PiS) hated the current government, claiming the same. PiS is the Polish equivalent of the Republicans, and PO (to which the interviewed minister Radosław Sikorski belongs) is the Polish equivalent of the Democrats. Although Polish democracy is not two-party, in practice only these two parties count in Polish politics, the other parties are of marginal importance.

Poland is an example of what a military ally should be. As a member of NATO Poland is meeting its spending obligations. Poland has unique vulnerabilities, sitting right on the north European plain. Europe needs to decide amongst themselves how to share the defensive burden. @@matthewmcguire728to be clear, the domestic political problem in the USA is only on the political right where the GOP is divided between a radical wing and a traditionalist wing. @@matthewmcguire728 Trump tends to be transactional and simplistic when it comes to NATO. Should all members meet the 2% of GDP military spending obligation? Yes. If I choose to be a member of a military alliance that is bound to come to my assistance, I should do my part and be ready to do the same. That being said, the US has tolerated delinquents for years because the alliance has other benefits. A robust military power like the US benefits greatly by having friends and friendly ground worldwide. It is also no surprise that the members of the alliance are also trading partners. As I mentioned earlier, Trump sees NATO only in a transactional manner, and unfortunately this does have traction amongst his supporters.

I understand that and I think we are stepping up our game lately. Due to our past, there are two important points to remember: 1. It was in many countries interest that Germany doesn't spend a lot on military and become the third strongest military force in the world. 2. In Germany, we learn from the beginning on what we did in both world wars. That's why our society is often very sceptical if people tell us to become a stronger military power. We have a very dark past. We as Germany have to act wisely. We have and will become a stronger military power again to stay with our friends and allies. However, we have to make sure that our cruel past doesn't repeat itself ever ever again.
