Evan: is tall, blond and blue-eyed Also Evan: Wow, I am German and Scandinavian edit: wow, people do not understand what a joke is, do they? I am very aware other ethnicities are also have these traits and not all Germans and Scandinavians have them. I *am* a short, green-eyed, brunette German, lol. The joke isn't that Evan fits these stereotypes (and that's what they are), it's that he's shocked about it. Even if there are a number of other ethnicities he could have been, it's not shocking information. It would've been shocking if the test had revealed a large non-European percentage or whatever, but this isn't shocking. That was my point.

There's a lot of Germans in Texas! Particularly in the middle around Northern San Antonio and Austin. Its dubbed "the german belt" there were a lot of German free thinker immigrants in the middle of the 1800s. I'm from that area of Texas and grew up in a VERY German town. Our main street is even called hauptstrasse.

Yeah a lot of Germans and other people from western and Central Europe came to America after the Revolutions of 1848 all failed and a bunch of right wing monarchists came to power/consolidated power in several European countries. Many of these people were political dissidents (mostly left-wing). In addition to Texas, the post 1848 migrants also settled heavily in the Midwest and contributed to an interesting labor/left friendly political atmosphere in certain cities and sometimes whole states

As a person doing a statistical genetics PhD, the way 23andMe present their data always makes me uncomfortable. The magnitude of risk could mean so many different things without knowing the baseline risk for the general population. For example triple risk of X sounds worse than double of Y. However if the standard risk level in the population of X is 1%, whereas Y is 10% obviously the possession of the specific variant at Y is more concerning. Plus a lot of the data these companies use has been discovered in statistical modelling but yet to be supported by traditional biological experimentation. So yeah, take results like these with a pinch of salt people.

i’m hella late but are there any dna testing companies you can recommend? not only based on that but generally?
@seraphina985
@seraphina985 4 жыл бұрын
@@nicii179 It's not that those results are wrong as such merely that the information could have been presented in a more informative way as relative values are not particularly useful without the baseline value to quantify them in context. That said you can look up the baseline risk for each condition yourself to make sense of the relative result but it is still unwise to simply expect the customer to do that and many people are likely to worry disproportionately due to the key information being omitted. There is after all a big difference between a large increase in your risk of a very rare condition and a smaller increase in risk for a very common condition the latter will often be the more relevant one to worry about despite the change in risk being smaller. A 300% increase in your risk of developing a condition only 1 in 100000 people develop normally is actually a smaller risk factor than a 10% increased risk for a condition 1 in 10 people usually develop +0.003% absolute risk for the former but +1% for the latter and you can see how quoting only the relative values could mislead those less well versed in statistics that wont know to look up the baseline data to interpret those relative results.

@@seraphina985 Actually, @VicLouGray is right. These tests often vary greatly in the results they provide. People who have tried various vendors often only get some agreement on the major ancestry line, but beyond that, the variation is so huge that these tests do not pass any minimal scientific standard. This is not to say that it cannot be done properly, it is just that the vendors who commercialized it are somewhat pseudoscientific, even though they do get things right from time to time, of course. Still, the problems with these tests go deeper than simply the mode of data presentation.

That's not how it works. The DNA tests shared ancestry with the current people living in those countries, not the ancient shared ancestors of the countries. Besides most british DNA is from ancient Britons that inhabited the island for almost 10k years, the Anglo-Saxon dna is the minority and isn't present in a huge chunck of brits (a brit with 30% anglo-saxon dna is very rare), and the Vikings DNA is even rarer, a very small portion and mostly in few parts of north-eastern UK.

I will say, my sister and I have been digging into our family history lately and she took a dna test! Hers showed “Native American” as well. They use “Native American” for all the Americas. So it added Native American on my sister’s dna list when it was referring to a great grandmother that was born and raised in Mexico! So there’s a chance it could be referencing something other than Native American tribes in North America. I hope to take a test sometime soon! Because apparently it can drastically vary percentages with family members!

MsClarinut actually, Mexico is a part of North America! 23andMe said I'm 72.2% British and Irish. That's after my ancestors being in the American South for over 300 years. Guess there wasn't much immigration there from anywhere else like in the rest of the US. So yeah, it may seem funny but I've always been an Anglophile and when I lived in the UK (South London) for almost a year I felt a really strong connection to the place almost from day one. I remember one day standing on a hill overlooking the Thames and thinking my people were here for thousands of years. Its just a bit mind blowing.

Knowing family history is really cool. My mom is crazy into genealogy and has her side of my family traced back to like the 1200s or something crazy like that in Scotland and it's just so cool to know about. Like, I've been learning more about John Napier, the inventor of Algorithms and a direct ancestor of mine, this past week and it's just so interesting to read about him and also some of the things he wrote (And that people thought he was a wizard and that the black rooster he kept chained to his arm was his familiar). I also love that we are related to the family that the Robin Hood lore was based on and that makes my archery loving, Robin Hood fangirl heart so happy. Also I would be so nervous about the health side too. My grandmother developed Parkinson's Disease which tends to pass down and that is absolutely terrifying.

Nope, if you look through their rights you 100% own your DNA. You can revoke their authorization at any time, you can have them get rid of the original sample, and more. What you do not own is research conducted based on your DNA samples. Think of it like this, you volunteer to answer questions for a survey for a University's Psych program, you don't own the research that the program puts together that includes your survey answers.

I wouldn't be surprised if I have some French or German, too, since we're pretty near the Pennsylvania Dutch area AND Quebec. And a little language note from an anglophone Canadian who's been learning French since kindergarten: having a base of other European languages seems to be a real help for learning new ones - if you think you'd like to learn French I suggest you go for it! IMO, it's no more confusing than English is, even with so many vowels haha. Plus, you'd be better prepared if you visit Montreal again - or DOUBLE prepared if you visit Switzerland!

The average British person has around 25% French/German and 25% Scandinavian ancestry as well. That is due to the Anglo-Saxon, Viking & Norman invasions of Britain. The 'British & Irish' part is actually celtic ancestry, of which British people also generally only have about 25% of too. It's highly likely that the majority of Evans ancestors came from Britain. Like 75%> because British people share a very similar ancestral DNA breakdown. As I said, the average Brit is made up of Celtic (British), French/German, Scandinavian and often a bit of Flemish (Dutch/Belgian) as well as Italian (from the Roman invasion).
