So why did a white european college guy from the united kingdom that I web cam chatted with on a random day on a web chat site told me his first thought on my race was filipino asian, that DNA ancestry testing is not accurate its like a polygraph test not accurate at all. I am not making this up, I randomly got linked to a white united kingdom european young guy that was the same age as me in our 20's and I asked him if he was european cause of his accent and of course he was white so I didn't mention that, after me asking where he was from he said and you? where are you from and whats your race, so I told him to guess and his first thought of my race was filipino asian because native americans look asianish closest asians that look similar to native americans are filipino asians, indians also did originate from asians. So I told him I was colombian / surinamese and he said oh that could be why.

I'm not used to be around people like that so to me they are boring, except for the African Americans and the hispanics that aren't raised in the US, they are fun people. Tlaloc sometimes it's confusing for latin people cause we're not used to make those distinctions between ethnicities all the time. Most of us only use our nationalities or continents to identify ourselves. Talking about races is almost considered rude. Someone told me I'm white cause my ancestors are mostly European but I never thought of it that way before. I've always considered myself Argentinian and Latin. Nothing else.

Spanish people aren't "white". They're hispanic, just like people from Portugal. It's annoying to see people call us "white", when some of us are even darker than those latinos that show up on this video. And in both those countries you'll find someone with dark tanned skin, a loose afro and dark eyes, like you'll find a pale white, blonde and with light eyes person, it's common, south europe is also a mix of different ancient races.

It's kinda funny to see this american latinos be surprised with their results. I guess it makes sense since they probably never had a chance to learn about latin america's past at their gringo schools but it totally makes sense that they're all half european. The main majority of latinos are mestizo/criollo (mixed) because our land was colonized by Spain. We are the sons of native women and spanish men, as they explain it in some history books. I would recommend they read some books about their upbringing.

val d I completely agree with what you're saying. I'm Jamaican and each and every one of us from every Caribbean country are raised learning Caribbean history at our schools from our indigenous inhabitants such as Tainos. So we understand that we've all been colonized by different countries many centuries ago from the English to Spanish to French to Portuguese and you can tell which ones succeeded in colonizing the countries from the national language each Caribbean country speaks today. Moreover we're aware that many individuals migrated to our countries seeking work or better lives, etc. (in Jamaican history some individuals arrived from countries like India, China, Lebanon, Africa and a majority of us are of a high percentage of African descent due to the very large population of African slaves brought here). As a result of this melting pot, we're all beautifully mixed. So if there's any person who has a central/south american or Caribbean background, you should know there's no such thing in your DNA as being 100% Dominican or Jamaican or Colombian or Barbadian, but that's alright. If you are curious about your historical background, there are many books and sites out there that can help you better understand not necessarily what you're mixed with, but at least the idea of where the people of our country came from. :)

The only explanation I could find of why some of them didn’t know that they had European blood, is because they lived almost their whole life in the United States. I mean, when you study and grow up in a Hispanic school, Colonization and all those topics are almost the most relevant thing that they teach you in History, in Latin America. If you lived in United States, of course they are not going to teach you a lot about it, it should be more about the colonization that happened here (United States). It’s the only explanation that I would find 🤷🏻♀️ But of course, you SHOULD know the history of the country where your parents are, and in some cases, where you born🤦🏻♀️

But it still makes no sense that they only teach about English colonisation in History class in the US, because the territory of the current US that was a part of the Spanish Empire is much bigger (California, Nevada, New Mexico, Texas, Florida,...) than the comparatively small thirteen English colonies. @@Alex-km9uw that land was owned by Mexico at the time not Spain. The fact that so many of them have some Jewish ancestry isn't shocking at all. Some studies show that 25% of all Latin Americans have at least some Jewish genetic markers, simply because the inquisition forced so many Jews to flee for their lives at the same time that colonial expansion was going on. They couldn't stay in Spain or Portugal and so many went to the colonies as an escape route and they couldn't be open about their religion, so the history of the families was gradually lost (e.g. their descendants bought into the fiction that they were Christians). A friend of my family actually had this happen to him, where he realized that his family were converso because all of their traditional recipes are kosher and multiple generations of his family (e.g. mother, grandmother, and great-grandmother) would light candles in the closet every Friday and praying just based on tradition (this originated from them having to light Shabbat candles in secret each week and, over the generations, they switched to Christian prayers but kept the tradition, with future generations ignorant of what it actually meant).
@martemmie27114 жыл бұрын
Yeah, I thought that too but they said Ashkenazi, while the Jews that escaped from Spain were Sefardí
@avabrackett71594 жыл бұрын
Yeah, I was surprised that they weren't Sephardic Jews. Most of them had 1% Ashkenazi Jew, which kind of makes sense. I wonder if it's because some of their DNA was similar to that of Jews in the Middle East who fled to Eastern Europe. There was not much of an explanation of their Ashkenazi relatives like where they were located and when they moved to Latin America. I wish we had a full explanation of their relatives, especially with areas that they were not expecting.
@thesarcasticliberal4 жыл бұрын
@@avabrackett7159 The only real difference between the different types of Jewish sub-ethnicity are the direction they went when fleeing the Middle East. They all descend from the same population, but some went into north Africa, some went into Europe, and others went north into places like Iraq and Iran. This means that all three sub-ethnicities share very similar biomarkers, particularly Ashkenazi and Sephardic Jews, who met up again in Spain prior to the inquisition and intermarried.
@gabyontiveros77533 жыл бұрын
In northern Mexico there is a lot of Jewish ancestry, especially in Monterrey
@dariomartinez4593 жыл бұрын
As someone with documented converso lineage and knowledge of Iberian history you are slightly off . Jews were in the Iberian peninsula long before the Maghrebi invasion and when given a choice to convert or leave ,many converted and remained but for some traveling to the new world was an escape from the "purity" laws and the oversight that new converts faces . At the same time many converted Jews became very famous (and wealthy)in Spain and Portugal and many people in the peninsula have Jewish DNA with the best known being from Mallorca. The descendants were not fictionally Christian because many converted sincerely and even though some of them kept cultural Jewish customs (without being aware of the origin ) most had become at least nominally Christian. Keep in mind that the truly religious Jews fled when given the choice so those left were not the most faithful Jews to start with and some just changed to nominal Christians. There is also a myth that the name Iberia itself means land of Jews ,but I haven't found much to corroborate that. Finally ,the Inquisition had no authority over non Christians and the whole story of the inquisition has been enormously exaggerated due to Anglo/Dutch propaganda. Although it was a sad time in Iberian history they were not running to avoid being killed because they were given the choice to leave or convert which at that time in history was not how it typically happened with people you wanted to get rid of ... Anyhow, as with any complex multifaceted issue ..simplistic views are usually wrong.

Maria Alvarez Latino is a term related to language. Latin was the language spoken by the ancient Romans, nowadays is a dead language, but several languages were developed from it such as Italian, French, Spanish, Portuguese and Rumanian among others, but those are the most important. Latin languages exists before the discovery of America, the Latin alphabet is the alphabet I am using right now, this alphabet was adopted by languages which had nothing to do with it, such as English or German. That gives you an idea about the importance of the Latin culture in European civilization and in the entire world. You’re Latino if your mother language is any of those languages I already mentioned, no matter if you are white, native american, black or a mix of any of those races. The fact that most Latin Americans aren’t white doesn’t make them a race by themselves. You can be white and Latino at the same time, in fact there’re white people in South America and they’re also Latinos ‘cause they speak Spanish or Portuguese. Europeans from Latin languages speaking countries are also Latinos, and a Canadian from Quebec whose mother language is French it is Latino too. However this guy from Quebec is not consider Latino while a 3 generation USA citizen from Mexico is always considered Latino although he doesn’t speak a word of Spanish. That’s wrong, the problem is considering Latino a race when it’s not. In fact, when looking at the DNA results, never say “45% Latino”, it says 45% Native American, or whatever. You’re Latin American if born in America and speak a Latin language. You may shorten it to Latinos, but remember its actual meaning. Latino is not a race. Latinos can be any race or a mixture of two or more races, Latino is actually a term related to language. In the USA being labeled as “Latino” only means no white, black or Asian, but it’s wrong, it’s NOT a race!! Stop confusing races with languages!! You can be white and Latino, in fact all Europeans Latinos are white. Hope you understand.

@alvarofavela29188 жыл бұрын

Let me break it down. Nearly all Latin Americans have Spanish (Iberian/Portuguese) ancestry because of Spanish colonization. Also, they have Native American Ancestry also. Mexicans generally have somewhere between 20%-80% Spanish/Native American (the splits can go either way) depending on your family. The further South you go, more of the Spanish ancestry is replaced with Native American ancestry + (and particularly with islanders), there is a higher percentage of Sub-Saharan ancestry. Now for the Jewish part... many Sephardi Jews were expelled from Portugal and Spain hundreds of years ago. A lot of those Jews were of mixed ancestry. For those that have Ashkenazi heritage in Latin America, you probably have a much larger percentage of Sephardi ethnicity... it's just not measured yet because there is really little to measure it with because of how spread out that ethnicity is. However, if you have some strange ethnicities for Latin Americans like Western Asian, Italian, undetermined Southern European. Middle East or Northern African; it's very likely that ethnicity is actually Sephardi.
@francogiobbimontesanti38267 жыл бұрын
apequake Your mostly right but what you say is only about Central Americans. Brazilians and Argentina are mostly white due to Italians and Germans and their Jewish population came after the holocaust and Brazil has a really big Asian population.

diamond; a You mentioned your self Black or mixed. It’s two different groups. If we count them separately Whites become the biggest group on Brazil.
@francogiobbimontesanti38267 жыл бұрын
diamond; a Nope I just red the statistics of IBGE. It shows that in Brazil there are no Majorities but the biggest group is of white people. It’s a self identifying poll which if you ask me as race is not really scientific it makes more sense to just except what the person says she is. What was really interesting tho was many mixed people do out them selfs as white. But it’s a very small minority actually what really surprised me tho was many white people especially in southern states put them selves as black to get “cotas raciais” in universities.
@francogiobbimontesanti38267 жыл бұрын
diamond; a I didn’t say there is a problem being black. I just want to say that brazil has no majorities but whites are still the biggest groups according to them selves. And I stated before some white people self identify as black so they can get some benifits from the governments. So in the end we can’t really know how many Brazilians are whites and how many are black. But there were 12 million Europeans immigrants compared to 4 million slaves(most of which wouldn’t even get to reproduce)

If you get a tan...thats pigmentation. You have melanin that reacted with UV. You cant start a cup of coffee with cream homie. You and everyone is just a variation of black. You cant have two straight hair people make a baby with a curly afro (unless their recessive gene (their black ancestor from long long ago) wanted to say "hey don't forget about me" in their child that they thought was gonna have "100% white features") it is what it is. Genetics don't lie.

I didn't say that curly hair is an African trait. I just said that those who got Sub-Saharan African DNA, specifically the girl, acted super surprised about that. We all know that curly hair can be found among Caucasians, and people with African descent. However Latinos are very mixed and they may have gotten the curly hair because of their African descent. I may be wrong but I was just trying to be funny about how they reacted. Relax people. No need to write novels about my comment.
