one of the best tricks for making phonk : put an eq that cuts out the highs and a tape emulation or something like supervhs on the master before making the beat. it helps a lot with soundselection

Great tutorial, it would be really cool to see you also cover the less popular genres of Phonk. 99% of tutorials I’ve seen have been drift phonk, but I recommend taking a listen to artists like SOUDIERE, Roland Jones, Berrymane, 1ONY, etc. These artists are what made me start making beats, and phonk definitely deserves some recognition beyond what is blowing up right now.

@@xanmancan Those artists and DJ Smokey are pioneers of the Phonk genre and they make Phonk in the best way that is more true to its origin of Memphis Rap. They don’t rely on only the cowbells so they can make a wider selection sounds as long as it has a vocal sample. Drift Phonk isn’t as good and is repetitive as that style of Phonk is what made it go viral/mainstream on TikTok etc. So now everyone is making Drift Phonk.

to find the pitch in something you can also go into edison and open the sound there. Then open the region settings and down there is a setting that says detect pitch regions. I use this for 808s and other sounds to find the key

Just now got a chance to watch this and what a banger video my friend! Never would have thought that when I've used cowbells, my piano roll actually isn't playing the correct note . Lol. Just that alone is an incredibly helpful tip. I know you've gone over it before but have always seemed to forget it. This one will stick this time around. Will be using that for a ton of sounds now.

To find the pitch in FL Studio, you can open it in Edison and click "pitch regions" and it will sometimes nail it. Newtone gets it every time though. Keyfinder too

Cool tutorial thanks. One tip on grammar though, if you can count the thing it’s “fewer” not “less” For eg: “ FEWER flashy production techniques and LESS distortion” Please don’t take this as a criticism , I too was happily using fewer/less incorrectly until someone helped me out.

phonk can be pretty diverse, but usually 140-180bpm

Phonk house stuff is 105-138 (usually in the 120-something range) Regular drift is 145-180. Varies greatly depending on your approach

a quick way to find the note of any sound is right click the sample in the channel rack (the soundwave itself), click open pitch editor and it gives you the note in a piano roll. Works well for tuning 808s
