I've been making beats for years and I just found out that I already know all these tips from my own experience. When I started, I obviously didn't know anything (I knew music theory but that's it), and I felt completely lost, so I didn't even know where to start, how to close "the gap" or which program should I use. Now that I'm watching this video, I have realised that I already know everything I need to get better, and I didn't expect to learn it all by myself when I started making beats. So for those of y'all who are starting in the beatmaking world, listen to this dude, he knows his shit lol

I came into hiphop production from a technical death metal and concert piano background. My beats were complex and progressive when I first started but had tons of clashing elements with rapidly evolving melodies that were impossible to wrap your brain around. It took years to slow down and simplify, get an ear for sound selection and learn to mix and master at least moderately well. Eleven years in and I'm still learning. Never give up.
@johnsonantonius2692
@johnsonantonius2692 Ай бұрын
The exact same thing happened to me, it was a real struggle learning to simplify my beats because my brains were so used to the musical technicality. I still make more complex and progressive beats from time to time but very differently now that ive learned to slow down.

I recently started to overcome the wall. No more feeling shame about my music being "too simple" or "not sounding unique". Just keep it mostly idiomatic, and do what works. I've learned that this drive that pushes us to make our art "unique" or "complex" is actually an egotistical need. We put our own needs above the needs of our art.

You are a legend, sir. A lot of what you mention here is why I quit making beats many moons ago. I love how self-aware you are, because as Bruce Lee said, all knowledge is ultimately self-knowledge, and vice versa. Meaning, the more you know yourself the more others can relate to you, because we're not as different as society wants us to think we are. Quick question, I'm currently LITERALLY at rock bottom, and have a pretty shitty laptop my job centre gave me 😂. Do you think I should hold out for a better cpu, or do you think there is a program my cpu can handle, which at the same time is comprehensive enough to accommodate my needs (I'm the boombap guy)? Quick note, i love plugins that lend a gritty hip hop feel. I used to use fl studio which is pretty plugin friendly.

Is it advisable to let my friends listen to my beats and suggest improvements while I'm still making?
@matthewthemartian
@matthewthemartian Ай бұрын
I would think that allowing people to listen and give you constructive criticism or their opinion would be very helpful BUT also consider the people you are showing the beats to and their musical background. For instance one friend may really enjoy country songs while the other one enjoys only rock or rap, in which case each friend may be slightly biased to the perspective on genres they listen to, such as one person may appreciate the "bells and whistles" and one may believe they make the beat sound harsh. So basically what I'm saying is that it's a great idea to show people your beats but also keep a strong focus on what YOU like and never forget that these are YOUR beats from YOUR mind. If it sounds good to you then it will sound good to a thousand more people.

I'm on FL Studio Mobile, I'm trying to make my way over to FL Studio, I'm slightly worried about making the jump, and paying for it. A lot of people have told me to pirate it, like I did the mobile version however, it doesn't update and once I tried to actually update it and connect it to the cloud to save my files I love everything. Thank God I had backups. Problem is though, the files for mobile and PC version are not the same. So I'm also worried about waiting too long to switch, will anyone take my mobile beats seriously? I have made over 100 beats on my phone
@matthewthemartian
@matthewthemartian Ай бұрын
It doesn't matter if you make your beats on a mobile phone or record yourself banging on the side of an oven with a fork and spoon. If it sounds good then it sounds good and the end result is all that matters. Judging by what you said about losing files while using a pirated version of a program then It sounds to me like you should either save up for FL Studio or even consider using a free program to make beats IF you are wanting to venture away from the mobile aspect of beat making. But again, in the end all that matters is that it sounds good as the end result no matter what you use to make it.

@matthewthemartian I guess seeing everyone on DAWs on PC, makes me feel like an amateur, which yes I am, I'm not a professional by any means, but you know, it gives you an imposter syndrome, a fraud complex, like I'm driving a cozy coupe at the gran prix, running a marathon in crocs, the tour de France with training wheels. But thanks for your encouragement it means a lot. I needed to hear that. Thank you!
@matthewthemartian
@matthewthemartian Ай бұрын
@@PlasJopexBeats I get exactly what your saying. It's easy to look around and be discouraged by what we see other people doing and compare ourselves to their life or situation. As humans we have a natural instinct to want the best for ourselves and it's easy to wonder sometimes where we went wrong and why don't we have the capability to do what others have done or are doing or have the things they have. But at the end of the day we DO have that capability, sometimes we just lack the drive to reach that point... but it doesn't make us any less capable. One thing I would say is that there are a lot of free programs that you can use to make beats on the CP without having to purchase a program such as FL. Granted you may be used to or "comfortable" using FL because you use it on mobile but truthfully that "comfortable" feeling is what makes us complacent in life. We tend to be creatures of habit and sometimes it's hard to break away from that feeling of "complacency" but once you break away from it then there are always new lands to explore on the other side of the fence. The grass may not be greener but you can always plant new grass wherever you go. For instance when I began making music I began on my phone, then I went to different programs on the computer, I settled on the DAW reaper for a while and then eventually went to the free version of Studio One 4. I used that until last year when I was finally able to upgrade to a paid version of Studio One 6. Actually it's the monthly subscription of "Sphere". Roughly $15/Month but includes every single thing you need to make music, rather it be to record or make beats. May be better programs out there and some people would object to a subscription service..but it works for me. There's unlimited options for making music out there, just have to pull out your shovel and dig around a bit until you hit that pocket of gold that you have been searching for and find what works FOR YOU! I would also maybe recommend looking into "Hit songs that were made on a mobile phone". There is some surprising information out there about people making entire albums and music videos directly from their phone, so if it works for you then let it work for you. And maybe looking into them things will help encourage you or inspire you. Who knows you may make the next hit song of 2024 right from your phone. God Bless you and hope you have a good day.
