I went to the Navien school last March. I definitely recommend taking it. I noticed the mixed metals, possibly causing electrolysis and water restriction due to corrosion in the galvanized fittings. Also the flow screens should be inspected and cleaned. The condensation connection should not have metal due to acidic condensation. I don’t mean to judge you personally. Nice job. Thanks for sharing. I dig your style.

I had a Navien NCB-240/130H Installed last in 2022 and am doing a descaling flush and as the sump pump, as it is pumping vinegar, is cycling the pump slows down after its been running for about 5 minutes. I did have a lot of brown iron in the that came through. can you tell me why this may be occurring?
@dennyvetter81962 жыл бұрын
I installed a Navien 240 A in northern Indiana 18 months ago. I've been very happy with the unit, we have a three bed room house that never rans out of hot water. House has three shower and at times all being used simultaneously. I've done one with vinegar flushing with minimal descaling. Fortunately for us our water supply is very clean and no major issues with mineral deposit. For us the unit has been great. I would not purchase an instant whole house water heater if I had poor water quality (Heavy minerals). or an old galvanize incoming cold water piping system. All tankless water heaters need clean water to operate efficiently and have long term durability.

I have a Navien NCB240/130 Combi boiler that is 3 years old installed by previous owners of the dwelling. I am not a plumber (master electrician though) and have an issue that doesn’t show up as any error code at all. I have the boiler set to not preheat the DHW. But intermittently the recirculating pump seems to continue running for long periods and even powering down the unit won’t turn off the pump. Only the main switch or unplugging will stop it. Then at times the pump starts and stops several times. All this with no request for SH or DHW. Any thoughts would be much appreciated! Kevin

With old systems with galvanised pipework full of corrosion with boilers like this will always cause you problems ! You need a magnetic filter , power flush the system & fit a water conditioner on the cold water supply to help with scale build up. Combi boilers are great if you install them properly , old systems will always pose issues . Plumbers in the USA need to realise they're not old cast iron units that will cope with any system . So it's all about learning new technology & fitting new components to stop corrosion entering the unit. In the uk we have commissioning procedures & if they aren't met the warranty will be voided & put the onus back on the installer to fit it properly. Manufacturers should show that in the instructions . Good to see your embracing it all chuck 👍👍

im from the uk.. and would always recommend you and cb2 go on these manufacturers courses! they help so much with understanding diagnosing boilers even with just a multimeter.. also to here if a pump is running get a long screwdriver put the metal tip onto the center of the pump and your ear on the handle of the screwdriver and you will be able to hear if it is running... you can also unscrew the flat head on the face of the pump and see it spinning, if it is spinning you can try stop it with a flat head screwdriver, if it stops easy then the pump is weak and needs changing... but you can also diagnose if the pump is weak or dead with a multi meter on ohms reading which they will teach you on the courses ps.. why dint you just change the pump head rather than the full lot? happy new year.. brendan (plumber/gas engineer) uk

Chuck, this issue you had with this boiler is one of the many reasons "why" I refuse to install any tankless or wall hung boiler. I went to a tankless class about 12 years ago, and I almost got thrown out of the class cause of the hard questions I was asking the salesman. The rest of the Plumber's in the room were high 5ing each other cause of the money they were going to make on these installs, and here I was asking technical questions where the salesman started to repeat sales talking points. I get calls all the time from people in my area who have problems with their tankless, and the original installer won't come back to service it. You're a better man than me Chuck..I want nothing to do with these things.
@larsonhomeinspection99326 жыл бұрын
Anthony S. Tankless technology had advanced a lot in 12 years. They are much more efficient and dependable. This is also a boiler and the boiler pump is what went bad.
@anthonys.56536 жыл бұрын
Larson, I like the concept of that technology, but in my honest opinion the drawbacks still out weigh the positives. Too many factors (quality,installation,reliability,circuitry,customer error, etc) make these products a living nightmare for any tradesman. Most all of these manufactures recommend a water softener to go a long with the installation of these units. The sticker shock alone, scares my customers away going down the tankless road, knowing that it's recommend to have a water softener. We have some hard water in my area of Pennsylvania, and 1 particular area, would lime up one of these units within a year an a half. I understand fully well that these units can be flushed, but that's where the customer error comes into play, cause you and I both know they forget, or don't want to spend the money. On a traditional boiler, those coils should be cleaned...and the customer's neglect it them as well. Then next thing ya know, we get that phone call "I have no hot water, or my hot water pressure is extremely low", and now it turns into mess. Another problem is, its the dead of winter, and you need a part for one of these wall hung boilers, and the supply house who sold you that unit, has no parts in stock. Sure we can over night parts, but you and I both know customer's don't want to hear that. Plus...the major problem I have with these supply houses are...they will sell you one of these units, but won't have any repair parts in stock. I blame us tradesman for that, cause we don't put enough pressure on them to keep their houses stocked with repair parts for anything they sell. Larson, tankless is just not for me or my company, and I have no problem losing those jobs to my competition.
@larsonhomeinspection99326 жыл бұрын
I hear ya. Definitely more complicated and harder to fix. Cast iron natural draft boilers last forever! I understand the mixing valves go out frequently too.

I’m on my 2nd Noritz tankless heater since 2006 . 1st one lasted 8yrs , copper heat exchanger started leaking all over the place, no recirculating pump. 2nd one there latest and greatest-recirculating pump started leaking after I flushed it out (every 6 months) unit is 4 yrs old. Pump is under warranty, not labor. Plumber ordered new pump, put it in , it leaked all over the place, called Noritz back, they didn’t send the gasket set with it. He couldn’t hardly get his hands in there to work on it , they sell Navien but they look almost as bad to work on. I used water softener, scale watcher and flushed them both out every 6 months. Looks like the pumps go out all the time. It’s hard telling what the labor is going to cost on this one, I’ve got at least $3,700 in both so far, money saver, I don’t think so! Never again. trick for all you out there if you are a landlord with more than one unit....dont put this saver condensing water because you will end up paying a lot of money on repairs and labor ..good for the plumbers but not for the landlordS ...I put 3 gas boilers a good ones for each unit in my bulding . and 3 ao smith PROLINE good water heaters regular venting connected to the wall in the basemant or chinney.. I dont like the power venting water heaters because you need an outlet for the vent to work ALL THE TIME and you will end up consuming more electricity...get regular venting. you just pay for the gas to heat up the water heater and get a gas pilot . not electric pilot starter..best advice I can give you as my personal experience from many coworkers in this field..and just do the maintenance every year or 2 .(you can do it yourself.your items will last at least 15 to 20 years for the boilers and 10 to 15 years for the water heaters..youll be safe a lot of parts in case if you need them in winter or summer ..and separate the units so the paying will come on the tenant bill , they will be happy because they will have hot water from the water heaters and the boiler will be just for winter time .and they will have the thermostat in their units and they can use it whenever they wanted never put a boiler to heat up the water gas or oil your tenant will see the diference on their bill.and move out ..get the good ones that I suggest above so the tenant will not get affect it. now if you have a single house.that you will be only paying I will put a brand gas new boiler for the heat only for winter time and water tank or a water heater.energy efficient. if you keep thinking this condensing boilers will save you money . you are wrong. and that's it folks ..

Navien’s technical support maybe awesome but their warranty claim process is bulls**t! My wife and I bought a new home which had a Navian 240 tankless water heater already installed. Six months after we moved in, the Navian displayed a 060 code. A problem with the Venturi multi-switch. After calling customer service about a warranty claim, I was told a licensed contractor would have to get on the phone with a service tech so the tech could walk the contractor/plumber through the process of diagnosing the issue. Well, I already knew what the problem was by the error code. Once the service tech agreed it was the VMS, I was told Navien would only pay a flat $150.00 for the repair.! When I ask the Navien rep who going to pay the contractor for the diagnosis? I was then told “we don’t pay for the diagnosis”?!!! What you expect him to work for free or for me, the homeowner to pay it!!! It’s a flat $150.00 payout…$75 dollars for drive time, $75 dollars for the repair…total bs!

Any money they thought they saved in energy costs is chewed up by service call after service call.
