Most of the time, native plants don’t freak out about whatever Texas weather throws at them. Plants may hunker down or not perform to our expectations in extended drought and freeze, but eventually they rally to collaborate with wildlife. Still, we’ve got to recognize their soil and light needs. And it’s okay to pair them with adapted and family favorites! Find out what “native plant” really means, ideas for perennials and annuals for sun and shade (and what that means) with John Hart Asher and Andrea DeLong-Amaya from the Lady Bird Johnson Wildflower Center.

I just recently found your site and have been binge watching for a week, 4 years ago I moved from my sand prairie in Iowa to south Florida and since finding you I find that there are many similar varieties that I'm incorporating into my quarter acre food forest...I'm currently tackling my front roadside ditch with tall grasses and native pollinators, curbing the runoff before the heavy rains start...great program, totally love it...ps...I love all the yard whimsy(junk)reminds me of Iowa...

Well balanced perspective. I’m new to natives and am super excited about incorporating them but I also enjoy some non-natives.

Many local nurseries and at the Wildflower Center plant sale if you're in Central Texas. Online, check sources like High Country Gardens.

So full sun requires no more than 6 hours sun? REQUIRES shade rest of the time in day light?

Full sun is 4+ hours of sun. Part sun is almost literally just morning sun
