‘Navigating SWORDFISH FISHING boats in the Messina Strait’ - Ch.21

In this episode we tackle the legendary Messina Strait, dodging multiple swordfish fishing (Passerelle) boats, whirlpools, currents and traffic. The Scendente and Bastardi currents made their presence known, but soon enough we were spat out the top in one piece!
Despite losing our orientation ever so slightly whilst behind the wheel(!), we soon set our sights on the beautiful Aeolian Islands just North of Sicily. We anchor off a stinky and steamy elderly volcano, find HOT bubbling springs and a collection of seriously organised fish!

Messina Strait. I crossed that a few years ago on a train ferry. You two in a boat with all those currents and traffic ! Brilliant for sure.

How are you guys dealing with 90/180 now you're back on the boat?

Arghh it’s a nightmare! No easy answer. It is possible get visa and residencies, but it’s expensive, hurdles and complicated etc.! This season was filmed a couple of years ago.. we’ve sailed two years now on the 90/180 using some of tactics above.. in real-time we’re now leaving the Med (EU), because essentially we can’t be here! The boat (ironically) has more rights to be here than us!!
