This one goes in my survival skill video folder, This covers three things, squared up construction projects, a portable "sun dial" and a compass, all wrapped up in something you can stick in your pocket, weighs nothing, and fulfills Dave multi use/purpose rule. Nice going Dave, you hit another home run. '-)

Another absolutely useful video that so subtly demonstrates Dave’s mastery and continual learning. Three new skills with one piece of kit. Fantastic

Dang..!! Now I want to tie one up with alpine butterfly knots so that if I want to stake it out I could.. 1 piece of rope with good knots and you can find 30/60/90 degree angle with it in triangle mode, North/South/east/west when in compass mode, and 15 degree increments when in land navigation mode.. this sir is probably the most brilliant thing I've seen all day..!!!! Well done..!! Semper-fi

Awesome idea, thanks for sharing. Was discussing your "paracord compass" with my Dad, and long story short we combined it with the "jungle rope" concept. Adding some functions to a great piece of kit.

I always carry a 6 foot piece of light gray paracord in my pocket. Instead of knots, I'm going to just use a Sharpie pen to make the 24 marks every inch from one end of the rope. Very simple and ingenious Mr. C!

I drew a circle in the snow one time and put a stick in the center to give me a vague idea of which way north was. It was on one of those hazy days where was hard to tell where the sun was. Fortunately, the stick cast just enough of a shadow so I could tell which path to take out of the woods.

Brilliant. I'm going to make one of these and putting it right into the land nav pouch. One question though: how far off do minutes throw off the degrees? For example, if it's 6:30am, how many degrees is my North/South line going to be off by approximately?

I'm thinking, What if instead of knots you stitch/sew same coloured line in say white kermentle rope/paracord, and use a different colour for the other "in between" markings. That way the distance of the marks is more accurate .
@johnsullivan656010 ай бұрын
Funding north was important in building structures also. Being able to create a right angle, as well as repeatable measurements, was part of the ‘secret’ knowledge of master masons passed down to journeyman masons. 12 inches in a foot wasn’t by accident. My theory anyway. You have a stick and string, your circle doesn’t have to be close, it can be perfect. The last knot should be small loops, with the insides to the next knot at the same interval. Try putting thin metal stakes through your knots to assist when setting your right angles.

Wouldn't mind seeing this unique device made out of paracord and colored/anodized aluminum crimp ferrules so the line isn't deformed and having one color ferrules for 3,6,9,12 and another contrasting color for 1&2,4&5,7&8,10&11. Would allow for a smoother arc/bend without the line kinking. Perhaps more precise too!!!

Do you even need the knot? Im tempted to mark all markings with a pen and do this on most of my cords. That said im in the uk so need a way to measure angle of a cloud as we dont see the sun much.
