What a great story! I once had a pilot tell me that 99% of the time, flying is just careful routine and 1% of the time something so freaky happens it will turn your hair (what remains of your hair) gray and takes care of any problem you may have had with constipation that day!

I was a P-3 TACCO . My "moment" was when I was still flying NAV. The plane was struck by lightning en route from Bandar Abbas, Iran to Diego Garcia in the Indian Ocean. We lost all nav equipment except ADF. I had to use the AFN radio station on the atoll to get us back..

Captain//// Steeeeve I'm Capt.//// Benny I had a similar situation with my 737 had started hydroplaning and I was a First Officer at the time and my Capt.//// Took over and ended up stopping about 20ft from the end. I really thought we were not going to make it. That's why I take criticism very well because there is always things to learn through your career. Thanks for sharing!!✈️

Jacksonville Fl resident and former navy AQ of the AIMD variety here 80-84. That was a great story to hear. Navy pilots are the greatest (to me). Knowing pilots like you are out there helped me get over my flying (as a passenger) fears. The P3 is an awesome aircraft that I used to watch fly over my house every day, too bad it’s being replaced with the P8.

Had something similar in a Jetstream many years ago. JBI was reported .28 strong 90 degree left crosswind within landing limits. It was left out in the runway report that 20 minutes before landing urea was applied. We were fine until we slowed through 80 knots then the crosswind affected us. We had no effective braking, were weather cocking into wind, using reverse and some power to stay on the runway centreline. We were too slow to initiate a go around on the remaining short runway. Our passengers were aware of the situation and a safety investigation and a review was done. This resulted in many changes to winter ground ops.. Urea makes water on the top of compacted ice and snow. It is amazing the number of things that occur to you in 52 years of flying.

Way to give the thanks for government narrative. Do any American civilians realise the government pushed this forward while shooting vets in the back. Civilians thank vets the government rips us off, shts us out and leaves tens of thousands in poverty with many homeless, on drugs or severe drink issues. Want to thank vets give us work. As soon as potential civilian managers hear military vet they run for the hills. Point is nobody wants the potential of harm to themselves or customers. Only option in best case scenario is policing or a shty paid security job

Not as serious as Capt. Steve, but way back in the early 1980's when I was on active duty I was driving F-4 aircrew to their planes. On the way back I got too close to a F-4's afterburner and almost got the step van tipped over. Visions of a courts-martial flew through my head... 🤐

I imagine my father had a similar scare landing at Ubon after a mission over Vietnam. He put the Phantom down on the wet runway easily enough, and pull the handle to deploy the drag chute…which promptly fell out of its housing and detached itself from the airplane. Quick onto the brakes, only to find…no brakes. Plan C was drop the hook and hope it engaged the departure end arresting gear, which, thankfully it did. Plan D would have involved a rocket and a silk tie.

A friend of mine and l were in a Stinson L-5 (single-engine, tandem seating) when we attempted to land on a rain slick runway. For a couple of seconds we were going straight and then we spun 90 degrees. As we slid sideways down the runway things slowed waaaay down. I remember thinking, "this isn't right." My buddy, who was in front flying the plane, quickly regained control and got us straightened out but things were hairy for a few seconds--it seemed like a lot longer. Most exciting landing of my life.

Hi Captain Steve: may I ask why did you not just take off again, with tanks full of fuel and go to another airport where the weather is better? I know that in the navy when you miss the cable on a carrier, you take off for another run. But a great story, though.

You certainly sound like a wise person in many ways. Believing that, I heard you say you sent an ‘airborne prayer’ in the midst of your emergency. Your plane stopped one foot before the end of the runway. Tell me, please, do you attribute that ‘salvation’ to luck, or to God who heard and answered your prayer because of His will? (Here’s where wisdom will definitely shine)
