@6:08, I was living in Yuma Proving Ground at the time. At night, the base would lose power and you'd hear choppers (w/o any lights). It was the Delta and Army aviators practicing on the mockup of the embassy in the desert. As I recall from COL Beckwith's book, the Marine pilots wanted a piece of the action and was a late substitute for Army avaiators. But as mentioned, 160th SOAR was created so it would never happen again. Also....LOVED the books.
@davidjeffrey2515 Жыл бұрын
I’ve read all his books. 👍. My favorite parts are actually when they’re training and prepping for a mission and what they go through. Setting up simulations. Choosing and working with the different weapons they will use. Getting it all down like clockwork to the millisecond. Making sure it is a well oiled machine firing on all cylinders and taking all contingencies into account.

The failure of that mission is because each branch of the military wanted a part of the mission. Marines didn’t have a part so the generals had them use marine helicopters. Delta could not use there experienced army pilots that they trained with since Vietnam. Which is why Joint Special Operations Command was created, to keep other generals out of the planning. Also why the Army’s special operations aviation 160th was created, so they could use the same pilots they train with.
@seandlax94 жыл бұрын
It also made the USMC the red headed step child of SOF in the US Military until 2006 when MARSOC was finally founded and allowed into JSOC.
@irvin3254 жыл бұрын
@@seandlax9 Before 9/11, the Marines didn't want to be part of JSOC. They didn't want Marines to be taken away from Marine missions. When your part of JSOC, your unit pretty much belongs to them. After 9/11, they changed there mind because all the top missions were going to JSOC. The Marines missed out on all of those missions. Again, generals wanting a piece of that pie, wanting Marines to participate, so MARSOC was made. Some Force Recon units were turned into MARSOC and pulled away from Marine missions. There was no real need to add another SF unit in JSOC. Again, generals wanting a piece of that pie, and Marines don't have to add it to there budget, JSOC can now pay for the MARSOC gear and training now.
@seandlax94 жыл бұрын
@@irvin325 That's all true, but it was a combination of this and the USMC not wanting to cooperate combined into Force Recon being pretty much neglected by the SOF community until post 9/11 when USMC brass finally got it through their head that they had to contribute to JSOC any meaningful participation.

The Plan had too many moving parts. It predicated on long term stealth with the HOPE of surprise and the potential for violence of action. It also predicated on VERY limited inter-branch training between Army, Air Force and Marines. And the training they did have was limited in scope to their specific job they'd perform, without any consideration of contingencies or operational set backs. JSOC and 160th SOAR(A) were created precisely for the capacity in conducting operations, with interagency, to better facilitate multirole operations and missions without fucking up like they did in 1979.

I worked on Operation Eagle Claw as an intell specialist back in 1980. My unit provided the satellite imagery for the planning of that operations. We worked in an underground vault on Offutt AFB, the 544th TMS. This was the time we were transitioning from film being dropped from a satellite to digital, the first Google Earth. We compiled historic film imagery and the new satellite with digital imagery was tasked with updating critical imagery for that mission. Unfortunately folks died on the ground in that mission. Only real time project I worked on while in the military.

@@KVSWF no. I was an intell guy working on the Sat Imagery collection and analysis team. We had the entire library of all TS sat imagery in our vault and pieced together images that helped plan the mission. Digital sat imagery was just beginning. Everything was still on film. Interesting side note, after Reagan won the election some of the freed hostages who had TS clearances toured our vault and I got to meet two or three of them. They thanked us for our efforts. Seals have more photo shoots than a sports illustrated model. Operation Eagle Claw failed because of the lack of Special Operations Aviation. That failure is why the Army created the 160 Special operations aviation Reg. The mission failure had nothing to do with DELTA.
@CallsItLikeISeizeIts4 жыл бұрын
While D was forming, Blue Light was formed from Rgr Bn’s. Main issues were everyone wanted in on the op. Uncoordinated operational prep led to joint/unified. Best thing was forming 160th SOAR for dedicated air support. Still lingering issues with Grenada, but got better over time
@TheLAGopher3 жыл бұрын
Blue Light was formed within the 5th SFG. SF saw no reason why CT capability couldn't be created within their existing organization the way the SAS adopted the CT mission vs the Brits creating another unit. Beckwith believed that SFs prime mission of UW and FID would sooner or later result in funding being directed away from CT towards those prime SF missions. That's why DELTA had to be its own thing and not a sub-unit within the larger Ranger and SF communities.

Just stumbled on this clip. I was on MC130 call sign Dragon 02 as the Electronic Warfare Officer for the mission. Not only was the mission at the very limits of our capability, it also required an incredible degree of innovation by all. Things that are bread and butter now - such as flying with NODs, blackout landings, comm-out inflight refueling, etc. were all developed during this mission. The incredible sting of failure, the loss of friends, but the fruit decades later of our Joint SOF capability is something that has left a lasting mark on my life.

The internet is so weird, I can't believe I am commenting under the post of a guy who actually took part in this mission. So all those techniques were not available then? What training did the pilots do, if any which was additional and specific to the mission?
@tprater18 ай бұрын
The crews had to learn how to takeoff/land as well as do in-flight refueling using 1st gen night vision devices - there were a host of other things that were developed, tried, adopted, failed that was part of some significant innovation required to complete such a complex mission. The requirements required us to operate at the limits, and sometimes beyond our existing capabilities.@@abdullahhashmi654

To be fair, the plan as conceived was the most viable one: looking at a map, eastern Iran was sparsely populated frontier, and thus reduced chance of detection at infiltration, and the location of Tehran necessitated a southern approach. It was a combination of inexperience and lack of coordination among the mission elements that caused the mission to abort. One does wonder if the assault could have gone off as well as planned, but alas we'll never know there.

My Father SFC Jim Loudermilk was a crew chief for the "Blue Light" unit, which was the predecessor to Delta. He used to tell me stories about how this all went down. He told me the reason those choppers went down was because the Unit that was chosen over Blue Light didn't have the skill set to operate in those conditions and that it was all political. He went on to say that if Blue Light was chosen none of that would of ever happened. Evidently from what my father was told after the incident is that the filters for the turbines on the choppers were either installed incorrectly or not installed at all, which led to the sand being sucked in to the turbine's combustor and adhering to the blades ultimately causing the engine failure. My Father was drafted in '69 and worked on Helicopters his entire career, this bothered him until his death in 2014. RIP pops! "Helicopters don't Fly, they beat the wind into submission"

What?!? A war movie starring ChuckNorris inaccurate?

Juan Guzman Yeah, I loved that movie when I was a kid. Saw it for the first time in forever a couple years ago, man it was so cheesy and highly inaccurate- that opening scene of Desert One especially. I was a little surprised tho they did have takeoff rockets on their C-130’s for that scene, which makes me wonder if somebody knew something about our backup plan Credible Sport? 🤷🏻♂️

Dick Marcincko is def a controversial figure. His novels were a great and entertaining read when they came out. His autobiographical stuff is even more fascinating, especially regarding Red Cell. As the first commander of Seal Team Six, and given his background and experience I’m surprised that Hollywood hasn’t made a movie about his exploits yet. 💥🇺🇸

I know he worked as an advisor in Hollywood on shows like 24, along with Barry Humphries. Also didn't he rip off the US Govt for a hand grenade contract? His computer game was 100% shit though! They sold as a Conflict: Desert Storm 3rd person squad game, yet it was a poor, Run and Gun FPS!

I read that book about the Delta Force when I was a kid too. Eagle Claw is a big part of it. But those Delta boys, they're something else. Total boogymen. They're the ghosts of even the special operations community. Marines check under their beds for Rangers. Rangers check under their beds for Seals and Green Berets. Seals and Green Berets check under their beds for Delta.

John Fraser kind of not really, the sas I would say are on par with delta, because delta is a mix between all of the U.S spec ops and the SAS.

It's also interesting how after the Fallout from Op Eagle Claw you see the damage control in full swing with even Hollywood in on the act releasing movies like Chuck Norris's Delta Force and movies with similar themes like Megaforce.
