Al Butterfield it would for me, in gonna join right after 2021, so that I could have my life quickly started with military experience, then I either go to college and go to a federal agency, or I go straight to the agency, since the job I want only needs a desired qualification of military experience

What a great story and message, Brother Michael. Indeed, the training we went through has influenced us for the rest of our entire lives...giving an "edge" even, as it mentally strengthened us with tools to succeed. Thanks for displaying such a positive mindset and showing what can be achieved...all from humble beginnings. HOO-YAH & God Bless you and your future efforts...! (Class 163/1989)

When you make it through to the Teams, you gain an "I can do anything that I really want" sort of mindset .... It definitely gives you a life long advantage in life .... Most guys in the Teams are fairly sharp and are driven to succeed and excel .... Crooke is one of many "after the Teams" success stories. ST2/68

I'd say this guy is slightly goal oriented? I have always stressed to my three sons to establish goals for yourself throughout your life, especially in your youth. They don't have to necessarily be big goals either. Ideally, some of your goals should build up to a larger goal, right? That is how amazing people like Prof. Crooke joined the Navy, got accepted to BUDS, became a SEAL, a college graduate, and on and on. Always strive to better yourself, you can't go wrong. Great story.

Just goes to show you that you would never peg this guy as a "typical navy SEAL". He's an adventurous, driven, and successful man, but still doesn't have that Navy SEAL quality. The difference is, He IS A NAVY SEAL!! He made it through an unbelievable mental and physical challenge that VERY few of us could withstand. I respect this man not only for his success in his life, but his sacrifice for our country and his willingness to put his neck out on the line for America. Thank you Michael Crooke!

Too bad I didn't have your advice before I attended college! My grades were pathetic, both before and after serving in the Navy. I should say, however, that after getting out of the Navy my grades did much better, but I still had no taste for professors who would teach, say, biology, and while they were at it give anti-Vietnam lectures to their classes. I loved and still love the Navy. I had no use for and still have no use for those American citizens who bad mouth the men and women of our Armed Services. Thank you, professor, for your service in our beloved Navy!

Michael, your self confidence projects a never ending motivated drive and exuberant positive attitude to create an excitement that inspires challenge and goal setting! It’s “THAT” FOCUS to be a WINNER which is the most infectious! And it’s “I know I will Reach my Goal that solidifies Optimism in a Relentless Positivity...In short, the Difference between Optimism & Relentless Positivity can be summed up like this: “Optimism is going after Moby Dick in a rowboat.. whereby Relentless Positivity is taking the tartar sauce with you!” HooYAH Teammate! from FROGMAN80 - Class 80

It’s so true. All you team guys are endless confident and don’t hesitate to do anything that you want to do. It’s really cool to see. I wish I could have tested myself mentally in buds but I was paralyzed in a car accident at 17 and all my athletic and military hopes vanished now an instant. But I love being around guys like Mike here and of course am truly great full for the risks and sacrifices they made.

I am not a Seal, but served IDF. What got myself thru some very tough training as a Paradog was I kept telling myself. If he can do it, I will do it. An this shit can't last forever, never ever quit. I'd die before I'd ever quit, as I had nothing behind me that would prevent me unless I suffered an injury during training. You have to believe from day one that you can n will get thru it, an it can't last forever, if he can do so can I. I'd even laugh inside while running our butts off. We had many who got injured n got cut. But most guys go 2-3 times before making the cut n getting into the training pipeline. From day one, I looked around an I had a pretty good take on who would stick it out. Many have that defeated look on their faces from day one. My team buddy n myself were equal in most ideas, not the very best. But pretty good at most phrases of selection process.

Today, all I have are good n some bad memories, but the thing I miss the most are hanging out with my brothers n sisters. You can say all you want about girls, but IDF girls rock. An I miss the chow we were served, you could eat all you wanted n generally take your time eating. Unless we were in training phrase, then you ate MREs like most any armed forces. I miss those fun times n yep we'd sing n dance in a circle together, I wouldn't trade that for anything.

Raise your right hand and take an elistment...or commission if you have a degree...i joined at 19, so far best decision I ever made...unfortunately I was injured in Iraq 2006 to severe to continue with the army...but because of vetran status lots of job opportunities...if you decide to work for the government like I did you will get a 10 point preference...pennsylvania does this...those 10 points will put you on the upper list out of thousands of applicant's..or use GI Bill for a degree...thr veterans affairs also has programs for degrees...

Life after military is different depending on MOS and deployments. Learning what you love is the only way to have purpose each day. A paycheck is great but if you hate what you're doing, no amount of money will change how it feels to do something you dislike each day.

Oh, absolutely. I guess it kind of depends on how you classify it. Yes, my military days are behind me but that's fine. That's all. I knew when I signed up at 18 I wasn't going to be in until I was 100. That's just not how it works. So knowing that's over, that's fine. I don't have to cling to that. Yes, it's a validation when I'm teaching leadership or whatever it's going to be but I'm not a soldier anymore. I'm not in the military anymore. Yes, I'm a SEAL, retired, and I'm always going to be a SEAL, but I'm not out carrying guns or doing stuff like that. Being able to accept that, knowing it's going to happen, and plugging into what my new purpose is by helping veterans and teaching stuff that I know is the next chapter. I know my book has lots of chapters left, family, grandkids and all that other stuff that I can't wait for. So hey, I've got Tim. Tim's another chapter, another friendship, another experience. Mike, Brady and Aaron, it's important for me to keep expanding those chapters, meeting new people, and seeing where this book goes because there are storylines all over the place. Like our storyline, helping with this and hopefully helping some veterans is a whole other piece of the pie that I never even thought about six months ago. And this ranch out here, that's a whole other chapter here to where we as a society, as a group, or a community can benefit other people.

the one thing I never hear is quite....well as an engineer knowing when to quite is as important as knowing when to start or finish. many times in development we decided to quite one thing and try another..that is what lead us to success. quiting or changing direction maybe not entirely. Intel had a very successful memory business decided one day that microprocessors was the route to go in, one day they quite and went into the processor business. That came from Andy Grove himself at Stanford. I was there at Intel ten years had two semesters with andy.

There are so many parallels between Marine Corps bootcamp and the mindset and training environment in BUD/S there had to be some jarhead involved with developing the curriculum. It's like they took bootcamp, doubled the length of time and folded in a number of additional evolutions, skills, and training goals. Of course every US Marine tends to forget we are, at all times, merely a department of the US Navy... 😉

I didnt know I had to lay it out in a format someone could understand with crayons. I also didnt realize the grammar police were checking me. Because one does not graduate, does not mean they didnt spend enough time there to learn anything. And then be assigned to other parts of the Navy where they contributed to the war effort as well. But then you serving all those years, making an attempt at something has given you the right to harass and verbally assault someone that was fighting for this country before you were most likely born. Saying I never rang the bell is a sign of pride and honor to me, and being dropped for politically reasons like most of the rest of my class does not take away from the fact it was never rang. If you made the attempt yourself instead of harassing people you may have known that. You are welcome for my service as well as the rest of us Vets that served in VietNam. But then, I guess one is only a patriot if they measure up to your standards. The ribbons, medals and disabilities we earned really mean nothing to folks like you. What ever, I will be as I want to be. I dont need your permission.
